Saints sign Dean Hammond from Colchester

We now have alot of central midfield options, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Wotton, Gillett, james, Lallana and wingers Holmes & Thomson.

..and the lad from Chelsea.

Problem is we can't afford any passengers in this league. I would therefore pick four in midfield, focused on work rate, tackling, aerial ability etc. For that reason I would go with, from R to L:

Holmes------Gillett-------Hammond------James/Chelsea lad

Still looks light though and in need of a couple more signings.

I agree but now Pardew should really focus on the defence. That midfield, with confidence and understanding, could potentially be one of the best midfields in the league. (Yesterday I thought we lacked confidence, nobody wanted to do anything with the ball except the short pass or hoof, no creativity). Our defence should now be the main priority and confidence of the squad needs working on. Was not nice seeing two of your own players having an argument half way through the second half either.

From the OS

"I like to get involved in the game and cover as many aspects of being a midfielder as I can," he explained. " I like to get on the ball, I'm quite aggressive and I can score a goal or two, so I enjoy everything about playing there.

Sounds like manna from heaven.

Welcome aboard Dean.

For 400k I think it is a very good piece of business, especially as we've been crying out for a midfielder with presence since the whistle blew at the start of the Millwall game.

One thing I don't understand is, if we can pick up a player of his quality in League One for £400k, or even a player of Lambert's quality for £1mill, why the hell did we blow our transfer budget last season on a French unproven 17 year old? Actually, having said that, I do completely understand. >

not sure about this signing but time will tell, we need 2 cb's is the priority, lancash*t is an absolute joke , I honestly wouldnt have him at the back in a conference team

Why wouldn't you be sure about this signing? 200 appearances, captain of Colchester and far, far better than Wootton who I am guessing he will be replacing. Exactly what we need to help get us out of this division. We know there are more players coming - Jaidi would be here now if there weren't work permit issues.

People need to calm the **** down and realise that the team that Pardew inherited is, give or take, rubbish. Building a winning team will take time, and even a blind man can see with the signings so far and the promise of more to come, we are taking huge strides in the right direction.

Interesting noe for you all :- Lambert was in rovers team in openning day defeat. they seem to know how to win now.

what's that got to do with anything?

are you saying that Lambert helped them lose games? despite scoring 29 goals last year?

When I saw the result and formation played in the Swindon defeat it did occur to me that previous games I've seen played with that formation,ie. one striker up forward, I was quite irate in that, how could anybody think you could win a game with that configuration? Later on, upon reflection; perhaps, just perhaps, Pardew does know a bit more about football than most of us and had put out a formation that possibly could salvage a point for us. The premise being that we do, at the moment, have a team sadly lacking in a few positions and a win away was beyond us. The reflection had me a little calmer in disposition. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, the premise that we could salvage a point with a negative approach was exposed after 9 minutes and we didn't seem to do much to adapt to that changing situation. Playing people out of position is also a worrying throwback to the Burley days, we still don't have any width and we still have to solve the riddle of where, if anywhere, to play Lallana. Even with the addition of Dean Hammond, the midfield still looks lightweight an unbalanced.

Anyone else think Wotton will play CB on Saturday?

I'd wondered about this ... but didn't dare suggest it!

Would be interesting to see whether people rate Ollie as so useless that they would rather see an awful 'out of position' midfielder take his place in the team (or on the bench) on Sat?

Bit difficult to start changing formation after only 9 minutes, people might get the idea you'd got the strategy entirely wrong from the start.

Can't say I've seen the guy play but I'm still excited by this possible signing:

1) Replacement for Wotton presumably so should see our ball use and retention improve;

2) Clearly accomplished at this level;

3) A signing which will really hurt the departing club, which is in our division.

On paper then, excellent.

And someone who talks on the pitch!

Puts gillet one place down the pecking oreder which is good to see as he is as bad as wotton.

I'd challenge your opinion, but now that I know that you have actually played football at a minor professional level, I wouldn't dare to presume to have better judgement than you. I'll just have to wait and see whether somebody who played at a higher level than you picks Gillett before Wotton to prove that you don't know what you're talking about. By the way, do you have any management experience? I'm assuming that qualification would rate higher than playing experience when it comes to judging players, as good players don't necessarily make good managers.

I've played and managed in Andover and District Saturday league and I reckon Gillett is quality!! ;-)

Opinion of Colchester fan my friend knows through work. When asked to describe Dean Hammond his response was...

6ft

Brown hair

One footed

****

Trophy wife

Comes from the East Sussex region

No chance of playing at a higher level

Injury prone

Brilliant. Lets hope it was just sour grapes.

Well no other COlchester fan I have spoken to shares that opinion, and he was their player of the season last year!
