Saints sign Dean Hammond from Colchester

I'm a bit worried that - for some strange reason - we're announcing 'advanced' talks with Hammond before we've actually signed the fella?!?! What's that all about?

Especially as his boss has just this minute joined Norwich.

* Hammond's mobile rings

" Hi Dean - it's the gaffer. Look - I've just joined Norwich as you know - and I realise you're in talks down there on the south coast - but I bought you - had faith in you - made you skipper - how's about popping up here & having a chat with the director? I'm sure we'll match whatever Southampton offer you...and we're not on minus 9 points either son! "

Old habits/kicks in the teeth never change at SFC!

Colchesters chairman has just released a statement explaining to the fans why he has let Hammond join Saints, basically the cash offer was to good to turn down and he would have been a free agent soon anyway.

Yes - but it doesn't mention any possible call from Norwich which might hijack the deal - only that they're letting him go. Still don't think we should broadcast the interest until he's signed!

On another article on their site it states they're negotiating with Norwich so that he can't take any U's players to Carrow Road this season. :D

quite impressed with the way their chairman is handling all this.

Unfortunately for him he could be claiming that every Colchester United season ticket holder would be entitled to free beer for life and I bet he would still be demonised right now!

Would have actually preferred Johnnie Jackson HOWEVER Dean Hammond... good signing, very good signing. :D

.... We havn't got him yet ...... Lambert of Norwich may lure him there ...it makes no difference what Colchester think .... the PLAYER & AGENT dictate what they want to happen

not necessarily.

If the chariman doesnt accept a bid from Norwich (and he wont) then the player doesnt go to Norwich.

Relax people, he's coming here - of that im certain.

I would have thought that Norwich is the last club on earth, they'd be prepared to sell him to, now.

Colchester Chariman speaks out about Hammond's move to saints.

"Dean has been a fantastic player for Colchester United, but the fee I have received for him will allow the club to go out and find a worthy replacement"

Note the use of the past tense....he's saying we've already handed over the cash therefore done deal?

it must be a done deal all barring the formalities...

I cant imagine the club would announce it if the transfer was a bit iffy..:smt081

I think it is a done deal - we announced to pre-empt it being mentioned in the hastily called Colchester press conference this arvo - this crap about Norwich halting the deal was always crap in my opinion - they don't have the cash.

As you say, old habits die hard. But perhaps the conversation went

"Hi Dean, it's Deano Wilkins here, your old gaffer at Brighton. Look - I've just joined Southampton and Pardew asked me who I thought I would recommend to come here. As I had faith in you and you were my captain with the Seagulls, I immediately thought of you. How's about popping back down South and having a chat with Alan and see what you think. Southampton have the fifth richest owner in British football and are signing up the best players to get them out of this division. You'll fit right in and with luck you'll be in the Fizzy Pop next year and quite possibly in the Premiership in two or three years."

I don't know what his personal circumstances are. For all we know, he could live in Brighton and the commute here would be better than up to Colchester.

That's called "tapping up". Be careful. Add this in.

Nicola phone's up CUFC Chairman and offers £400,000 for their captain. Chairman tells Nicola they can talk to him. Nicola puts Dean on the phone.

Yep, your right, I can see it now - I forgot about Griffit

(which, to be fair, is easily done)

Not a problem, as you say, very easily done.

In our next lecture we shall be discussing the relationship between second order differentials and the number of goals conceeded in Serie A in the 1960's by teams using Catenaccio.;)

Managed to get some feedback from a brighton fan...quite encouraging.

i'll summarise it....

''He is a class act - easily the best midfielder in this league and would be one of the best in the championship if he was given a chance up there - he was brilliant when he was with us and i was utterly gutted when he left, we've not been the same since. I'm not looking forward to facing you guys...''

Would be a good player for us. Someone with the ability at this level to push the club forward. A bit of a midfield general who has the attitude this club is so desperate for.

However

He is not an attacking player. He does not create chances. He in fact only has 1 assist last year. He will make the midfield more solid and that is something we needed badly.

I just hope then we can add a new CB or maybe 2. And at least an attacking creative midfielder. Without creating chances we will not score.

So welcome Dean. You are a player we have needed for sometime. Goodluck to you :)

Thanks for the sanitised PC version.;) I thought that Paul Hart stated that it went on all the time.;)

My hope is that he will free up the creative players (AL, MS) so they can get on with stuff at the business end, rather than having to constantly try to plug up the holes in the back. Heres hoping anyway.

Looks like an excellant signing.

We've been waiting for a commanding CM for ages and finally we might just have one.

If Hammond can do the ball winning duties Schneiderlin will then be able to open up his passing game. This means that the wide men and strikers should get better service.

The lack of bite in CM has been at the heart of our problems - hopefully this will solve it.

Got to say it feels great to be the club that is doing the raiding rather than the one being asset stripped!

At this bloody rate we'll be going up and stuff. Bollocxs I say. I want us to be building very very very very very slowly for the future, not actually going and bloody signing good players at this time of the season when they might make an immediate impact and lift us into Hopesville arleady.

Personally I'm a little disappointed with ML's readiness with his cheque book when I had hoped for at least 5 to 15 years in this division consolidating. Who the fxxk next? Another good player no doubt? This is the slippery slope to success I feared most.

All a bit fishy if you ask me. Why announce that we are in "advanced talks"? Unless he has signed, which I assume he hasn't, then it can still be a non-event. How "advanced" can you get without it being done? Is he halfway through writing his signature with a pen that keeps running out of ink or what?

Maybe because of the match tonight, all the formalities and medical etc. can't be finalised until the morning?

Sounds like it's done and dusted to me

Quote from U's Chairman...

''I alone made the decision to allow Dean to move to Southampton and I did so because Dean was out of contract at the end of the season and he did not want to extend his stay with the U's beyond that time.

Dean has been a fantastic player for Colchester United, but the fee I have received for him will allow the club to go out and find a worthy replacement that will also be here for next season and the one after that.''

I'm guessing he needs to have a medical. As far as we can tell from what their chairman has said the two clubs have agreed a fee. So as he says he would not sign a new contract and wanted to leave next summer for free, meaning he obviously wanted to leave. So i guess the club now can speak to the player and sort out personel terms, have the medical and that will be it.

Once a bid is accepted very rarely does a player then decide not to go.

Quotes from Colchester fans...

''He is an excellent CM hence the fact he is our club captain. You are paying a hefty fee for him though according to our Chairman and he will be worth it. He is one of the main contributors to our success story so far this season.''

''He`s aclassy player, good in the tackle and keeps it simple in his distribution. Shocker if we let him go.''

''

As for Mr Hammond, Well what a class player you have, His one of few in the squad im dissapointed to see go, But when it comes to saints vs U's, No contest. All the best Deano

''If you manage to get him, you have got a fantastic player. He won Player Of The Year last season and is our club captain, and an excellent one at that. Reports our end is that it is for 400k, if so you have got an absolute steal. cry.gif''

I know what you mean. I was settled on the prospect of several years surviving in this division by the skin of our teeth, with low ST prices and the odd win to keep me happy. As things are going, we will get promoted back to the Premiership, ticket prices will soar, all sorts of plastic fans will join us, including many of the worst specimens locally who are currently wearing Skate blue. It will be far more difficult to win games and instead of watching the honest endeavours of the lower division English footballers, we will be watching the imported Johnny foreigners being paid obscene sums of money and diving all over the pitch theatrically. ;) We won't be supporting our local football team, more like pledging allegiance to some Worldwide consumer brand.
