Saints sign Dean Hammond from Colchester

Hope he's as good as people on here expect, the midfield against Huddersfield just had nothing at all, no width, no energy, nothing going forward and nothing to help out the defense just four player who didn't have a clue what to do.

Even with Hammond we're still two midfielders away from a decent midfield four/five. We just can't rely on any of our wingers and James and Lallana shouldn't be shifted out wide ever again, we need pacey players who are good on the ball out wide, leave Lallana and James in the middle.

I was being ironic, not moronic.

But you're being moronic now for thinking you were being ironic when in fact there was no irony at all in what you said. I think you mean 'sarcastic'. Tut tut.

Anyway, really strange that we've put this up on the OS before the deal is completed and it makes you wonder if another club are trying to come in for him. Hopefully it'll all go through ASAP though, it seems there are only good things written about this guy. Good work if it goes through AP.

I've amended it for you.

;)

My bad, how could any Saints fan forget that legendary PL quality player we have in the squad um damn your retype doesn't show up who was it again?

So 399,997.26, plus a Lardie Slice from Reeves the Bakers and the two in P/eX

See, much better than a computer game

Once again, Pardew proves he's an astute judge of a player and if we get him for the rumoured £400,000, rather than Claridges's £750,000 valuation from a couple of years ago, then we've got a bargain!

Keep it up AP. :-)

I think you'll find that it is Dean Wilkins who is an astute judge of a player especially at this level. As for what Minty says couldn't agree more. It's Alan Ball all over again in terms of the play going through him/short passes (not the good in the air bit perhaps though)!

why take other teams best players? makes no sense

Remember...!.. that OTHER clubs in this league don't have the financial clout that we have now, and * Bristol Rovers have probably seldom seen anything like a £1 million deal (Lambert)...and likely the same for * Colchester, too.

(As they paid 250K last year, we can surely get Hammond for ..400K/500K..?)

In this financial crisis time (*they) can't afford to say no to anyone who has cash up front, so it's a buyer market for us.

The "why" is surely that they are the best available players (in their position) IN THIS LEAGUE.

Although we all talk about a.. " Prem. set-up "..we are in L1 ...and don't need " extra skilful, ex-international" players to get us out of it...but those with a proven track record for this division. Hence the likes of Lambert and Hammond.

AP knows the type of player we need for CCC ..or Prem. for that matter, but we don't need THEM just now.

Horses for courses !

will this go some way to satisfy the masses who think we are not doing enough

Murty

Harding

Lambert (the divisions best striker)

now this guy (a rival captain)

with more to come...does this show we are penny pinching or not showing intent..

ffs, a win tonight and it will be automatic promotion again..

Showing intent TDDs... clearly showing intent. :)

BUT... we still need more signings to get out of the relegation zone and get rid of the Lowe legacy team for good, IMHO 5 more.

Building a team that can compete in League 1, with League 1 players :-)

This season is ALL about consolidation, mid table, gel together a good team from this summer and jan 2010s buys, hit the ground running in 2010/2011 season promotion... add to a strong squad over the 2011 close season challenge for plays offs/promotion 2011/2012 & 2012/2013 in prem by 2013/2014.... would do me :-)

I am quite worried by this.

I hope Pardew is spending this cash wisely and not just investing it in players that are "highly rated" in this division. That doesn't mean they will get us out of this mess. We need to get our scouting operation back up to scratch so we can unearth some gems, rather than paying over the odds for players like Hammond.

we've spent far too long buying young un-knowns in the past, and look where it's landed us.

To be fair i've spoken to a Col U supporting mate of mine who's gutted about Hammond leaving and reckons he'll be a great signing for us - besides - Wilkins knows him well from his time at Brighton, and I'd be far happier getting in experienced players than highly rated but totally untested young 'uns from bongo bongo land

Hmm, you are worried by the signing of a club captain, surely you'd be more worried if we did not sign anyone at all? I agree we should be looking for 'gems' but often 'gems' aren't the answer and players who have experience are, players like Hammond, as you put it.

Hammond, Lambert, Harding and Murty.

Four players who every team in this league would be delighted to sign.

Next season is going to be fun.

Lambert I'll give you

Hammond and Harding maybe

Murty - not so sure - a great captain at Reading, and a good right back in his prime - but at 34 he is not going to play 90 minutes week in week out - and he's got no pace at all now. If the team was full strength he would make an excellent cover signing for right back. Saying that he might be able to teach James how to be a right back - he was certainly coaching him on the pitch against Millwall!

Totally agree. We need to get players in for the hear and now! And have done for the past 3 years. That is now being done. Work on finding 'diamonds in the rough' can now occur after we are stabilised.

The amount of times I've read this on here. Everyone must have a mate that supports a club with a player we're trying to buy. Hey, I remember my Skonto Riga supporting mate Jurgis was gutted when we signed Marian Pahars!

There is only ONE thing missing that would make this TOTALLY fantastic news...

The fact that the fee is 400k + Wotton in part exchange

But meanwhile back at the doomsayers secret underground bunker....

I heard it was only £300K without him? :D

I'd have to agree with most of that - although we should leave James on the bench and player Lallana as an inside forward/second striker

Gillett is a good midfielder and we should play him - he can tackle and pass, keep posession and get from box-to-box - he's just a bit small.

maybe Hammond and Gillett will be the way to go in the middle

mayeb we can give Colchester Wotton and Pulis in part exchange - or loan them to Bournemouth!

He's a better player than arguably 8 or 9 of our starting line-up. I am not so worried about this! :)

You're quite worried that we're signing proven players in the league we're new to?

You're not really? Are you?

Unfortunately I fear this would see the price of the deal go from £400K to £500K.

I just can't make my mind up regarding Gillett, he seems to have a few good games then a few shockers although of course it seems no one is exempt from that pattern.

as do i...was having a pop at the universal miserable people who moan at everything

why is it so hard for you to just state your opinion, without the irony and plain silly sentences ?

this isnt a kindergarten,so please save those moronic and childish posts of yours for the muppet show.

okey?

you must be one dumb hillbilly to don`t even see the slightest hint of hypocrisy when you moan and complain about those who complain about the team.

at least these people do their complaining on a level suited for grown-ups.

personally I think you are just envious, feeling dethroned from your position as Main Moaner for SFC over the last three seasons..!

If we buy from league 1 we are also weakening the opposition teams.

Colchester would rather sell a star player to Saints with 13/14 days to go than risk Norwich coming in late on deadline day & unsettling player into a last minute move

Hammond could be the player who makes Wotton & Pulis start playing, IMHO Wotton is a squad player, Pulis could be great but until he plays he is more useless than Ali Dia

Pulis could be great at cutting the grass or cleaning out his glow in the dark fish tank but Pulis could never be great at football.

I'm a bit worried that - for some strange reason - we're announcing 'advanced' talks with Hammond before we've actually signed the fella?!?! What's that all about?

Especially as his boss has just this minute joined Norwich.

* Hammond's mobile rings

" Hi Dean - it's the gaffer. Look - I've just joined Norwich as you know - and I realise you're in talks down there on the south coast - but I bought you - had faith in you - made you skipper - how's about popping up here & having a chat with the director? I'm sure we'll match whatever Southampton offer you...and we're not on minus 9 points either son! "

Old habits/kicks in the teeth never change at SFC!

Thing is, I doubt they WILL match what we offered.
