Saints sign Dean Hammond from Colchester

If this is true (and I have no reason to doubt it, obviously!) then he could be potentially the single most important signing we make.

Players like him, MAKE the team play football. They create space for themselves, they demand the ball, they keep the play simple, until such time as they spot an opening or can prompt a move. If nothing is forthcoming, they keep possession, but when an opportunity arises, they exploit it. Performences like Huddersfield will still happen, but it's less likely when you have midfielders who want the ball, infact DEMAND it, from the defence, and force the pattern of play.

The more I hear, the more I like.

again..I agree..

since pards has come we needed..

RB - check

LB - check

CM - (hopefully) check twice

CF - Check on a massive scale (for league 1)

just need a CB and we have the basis of a bloody good league 1 side with a great spine to the team..are we allowed to say this..?

Ditto. He "sounds" like the exact type of player/midfield general/playmaker we've been crying-out for since I don't know when...years!

Yeah, who was the last one we had?

Wotton.... no

Morgan.........no

Oakley...... not really

Delap...... kinda but no

Quashie..... he wishes....

Carlton Palmer........ pffft.....

Darren Potter, Richard Chaplow and Danny Guthrie..... loaners don't count.

what I don't get is, why have we announced via official site that we are in talks! Is that because of the upheaval at the u's, so we don't miss out?

is there a risk that Lambert might try and take him to Norwich at the last minute? What are their midfield options like? (just before I get too excited at this Saints buying players we need shocker)

Me thinks it's a little late for that.

I know we are..just will take a few weeks of the season for pards to have a real effect on and off the pitch..

even if we signed no one after lambert, i still could not see us fighting relegation...maybe struggle for the playoffs, but no way would we struggle to stay up...those who say so are quite insulting to the players we have

'Advanced' talks says the OS, so I fully expect the only things outstanding are formalities. I couldn't see them releasing the news if it wasn't going to happen.

Fabrice?... ;)

We need a new midfield genius. Not since Chris Marsden have I truly worshipped a midfielder of any kind!

Looks a genuinely good prospect. If Wilkins rated him at Brighton and he gets a decent write-up from the ex-Skate Claridge, it does point to a good player. I liked the fact that he shows ambition and also that he has been a good captain at both Brighton and Colchester. It seems that he could do a good job in front of Harding if Mills is out, or left centre midfield, hopefully the replacement for Wotton.

Hmmm... Your clairvoyancy skills last season kinda showed why you should not make rash statements, matey.

I would add a wide RMF or RW to that and a couple of squad/back-up players and then I'd agree. We will need to replace one of Rasiak and Saganowski if/when they go.

I have to agree Pardew is doing a good job filling the gaps in our side as you say a HMF centre back next please and then someone with pace that can play wide or up front and we have a squad as good as anyones in this league I like the way he is buying players that have the ability to step up to the CCC as well it shows a bit of planning not just knee jerk reaction I think Harding Lambert & Hammond can all do a job a league higher good news COYR

i would say yes to the above for a promotion contending team....

but as a good league 1 team..yes, we are pretty damn good

Agreed. We have always had some quality, but it's simply not been coached and developed properly. We saw flashes last year, but never enough consistent application, hence we are where we are.

With Pardew now seemingly working on a variety of things in training and adding some real quality to the squad too, I am confident we'll see a real improvement over the coming weeks and months. Every interview of his that I've seen seems acutely aware of our shortcomings and, more importantly, knows how he wants to deal with it and put it right.

That said, there will still be poor performances and bad results, but that's football. Now, more than at any other time in the last few years, really is the time to have some faith IMO.

Tut Tut ... Apologies .... what I meant was that, although they may not have been allowed to play against us .... they DID contribute to their (respective) Teams points toatal .... which did count against us, and the other two relegated Teams, at the end of the season .....

...... Don't get so Tetchy Rupert .........have a lie down, ....there's a dear .... or possibly deer.....

They did more to help us i think you will find. they helped by saving us money and also help there respective teams beat the teams around us which in effect gave us a better chance of survival. there teams pushing for promotion did bugger all in the way of relegating us.

yes there will... we will no doubt lose a home game...we will no doubt get WELL beaten away from home probably more than once more..

I fear the next defeat will result in the whinging like we have had over the weekend again...

BUT, I really think that after xmas we will be a force in this league...expecially at home

Perhaps we have written the article explaining we are in advanced talks because Colchester mentioned it in their press conference? They obviously want to get all of their bad news out of the way in one go... so once they gave the info we just backed it up by claiming we hope to have it completed by tomorrow

I wonder what squad numbers are left..didnt melis get 35..?

Yes he did, but I think that was because he is a) a loan signing and b) they were saving other numbers for signings ;)

6, 12, 14 are the other numbers available.

Because every post on every thread manages to get back to Lowe. Move on FFS!!!

OK, I see your point ..... perhaps it's because when we talk about anything and everything that has gone wrong with our Club ............. it can always be traced back to Lowe ......

Simples:)

There is only ONE thing missing that would make this TOTALLY fantastic news...

The fact that the fee is 400k + Wotton and Pulis in part exchange

But meanwhile back at the doomsayers secret underground bunker....

I've amended it for you.

Certainly think he would be a good signing and I am genuinely excited by the prospect of seeing him dictate the play in the middle of the park. Hadn't heard much of him before, and before clicking on the link to wikipedia I thought he'd be some 34 year old almost-past-it player who would be backing up the current squad. But a 26 year old skipper is an exciting prospect and I hope they wrap up the deal as soon as possible! It all looks pleasantly good.

Great post Minty. I am liking this news more and more too the more I hear about Hammond.

Come on Saints let's get this deal done very quickly please. I will now be absolutely gutted if it falls through.
