Weston Saint Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 Ajantha Mendis Biography 24 year old Ajantha Mendis is a spinner who bowls a mixture of googlies, offbreaks, top-spinners, flippers, legbreaks and the infamous ‘carrom ball’, which he releases with a flick of his middle finger. His first Test Match was against India at Colombo in 2008 in which he returned match figures of 8-132, thereby becoming the first Sri Lankan bowler to get an eight-wicket haul on Test debut. He has played 8 Test matches for Sri Lanka taking 39 wickets with best innings figures of 6-117, and best match figures of 10-209. Mendis has also played 30 ODI’s taking 66 wickets with best figures of 6-13 coming against India in the Asia Cup. His 17 wickets in the tournament earned him the Man-of-the-Series award. In addition, Mendis has played 10 T20 Internationals taking 23 wickets with a best of 4-15 against Zimbabwe. Mendis won the “Emerging Player of the Year” at the 2008 ICC awards coming ahead of the likes of Stuart Broad, Ishant Sharma and Morne Morkel. mynameisthehulk Posted 17 August, 2009 Share Posted 17 August, 2009 Cracking signing this one, does things with the ball that no one else can, just like someone else we all know, different ball mind you.
Weston Saint Posted 3 March, 2010 Share Posted 3 March, 2010 Heard on Solent this morning signing is in doubt through Mendis increasing unavailability. Hants have a new target whom they have offered a contract but as he has not signed yet they are not saying who. As the report on Solent came from Kevan James it has a high level of credibility. Weston Saint Posted 3 March, 2010 Share Posted 3 March, 2010 Echo now running a story that announcement on Friday. Two overseas players. Possibly Katich for early part of the season and another for T20 to play alongside Afridi Briggs and Dawson will provide the main spin attack

The Saturday Boy Posted 4 March, 2010 Share Posted 4 March, 2010 Katich would be a very handy signing. I'm not so sure about relying on Briggs and Dawson as the main spin options though. Briggs looks a very capable spinner, but must have only have played a handful of games and from what Dawson's bowling, it stills need a lot of work. Anyone have any idea about the other T20 signing? Unless, he has already been snapped up by someone, how about Shane Bond?
Weston Saint Posted 6 March, 2010 Share Posted 6 March, 2010 Looks like it will not be Katich. He has had no contact. Club are now saying they are close to signing a quality spinner for championship games. Also a player for T20. Could it be Brett Lee??? He has now retired from Tests and Bransgrove and he are good friends. Shane Bond says no approach for him. Expected to finalise this weekend and unveil on Monday

Expected to finalise this weekend and unveil on Monday Looking forward to watching the Hawks again (or is it now the Royals?), although we start with 4 games away from the Rosey. Excited about the prospect of signing Brett Lee. If he can stay fit. We already have Simon Jones to worry about on that front. Who do we think for the 'quality spinner' then? Personally, I would love it to be Vettori. Or Warney of course. And congratulations to Carbs for getting into the England side, despite a knock of just 5 in the first innings against Bangledesh A. chrisobee Posted 9 March, 2010 Share Posted 9 March, 2010 (edited) Abdul Razzaq set to sign for the T20's and the spinner to be added by end of the week - http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/5048373.Hants_set_to_sign_Razzaq/ Good signing, I'm just hoping now we do get the quality spinner that has been on ther cards since it was announced that Mendes was not going to sign. He did lose form a few months ago whilst playing for Sri Lanka so that news was not so surprising nor disapppointing and as mentioned we do have Dawson and Briggs. A bowling attack of Kabir Ali, Dimi, Jones ( if fit!), Ervine ( in short bursts only please ! ) Dawson/Briggs and a quality spinner would be very useful indeed with Tomlinson, Griffiths and Riazuddin as back up. Have I missed anyone ? Edit: Oh my lord, how could I forget Corky ! Edited 9 March, 2010 by chrisobee
chrisobee Posted 22 March, 2010 Share Posted 22 March, 2010 (edited) Bad news now is that Dimi is set to miss the 1st few months of the season, just flown home from the IPL with an achilles injury. That's the "worse case scenario" according to Giles White.
