Rod Le Shearer Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 maybe...just maybe he is better than what we have in the middle of the park after morgan...????? yeah,I hope so. but Gobern,Thompson and White are decent attacking midfielders too, great prospects. If he is just marginally better,I think we would be better off playing one of them instead. If the new guy is very good,however..then my concerns are unfounded ! time will tell,I guess.
eurosaint Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 If he is not better than Wotton I'll eat my season ticket !!!

All wide players though or at least with a tendency to drift, I think Mellis plays through the centre more and can link up play with the strikers.
funkymojo44 Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Not sure on this one, probably decent player and will do well im sure, but always on the look out for players with good experience tbf
Rod Le Shearer Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 If he is not better than Wotton I'll eat my season ticket !!! ofcourse he is better than Wotton, who isnt ? but not more experienced. besides I think either Wotton or Gillett will play every game anyway. I dont see Schneiderlin and Melis as being our CM`s in this division, wee need someone with a more defensive mindset for most games. Melis wont compete with Wotton for a place in the team,so it doesnt matter if Melis is better !

Rod Le Shearer Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 how do you know who he will compete a place for...maybe pards will play him wide and move lallana in..? who knows Lallana and Schneiderlin in CM? maybe against Wycombe at home.. I dont know what Pardew thinks,I`m just giving the reasons for my concerns.
yorkiesaint Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Wherever he plays he's clearly not in the pulis / molyneux / smith mould. lets not forget how far we've come!

I am not suggesting that Melis is a direct replacement but if we want a formation with some quality then things may have to be switched around a bit !
DT Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Well I think he looks bloody good. Nice one, Mr Wilkins. Not sure I've seen too many others look less like a centre back though. Bit worrying we still haven't signed the most important position...
the saint in winchester Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Jacob Melis and Joseph Mills? They sound like a couple of 18th century watchmakers.
Katalinic Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Jacob Melis and Joseph Mills? They sound like a couple of 18th century watchmakers. A couple of characters from a Dickens novel.
cjay7 Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Melis is clearly there to alleviate the pressure of the 45 + games that 19 year old MS would have had to play. Also he seems to add another option for CM.
Asaint4ever Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Hes not even on Fifa 09... He must be crap. im fifa 09 king!
Bailey Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Hard to comment as I have never seen Mellis in action, but I'll trust Pards on this one. What I will say is that he gives us another option in midfield and pushes Pulis further down the pecking order so can't be bad! Seriously though, it's good to see that we're using Dean Wilkins' links with Chelsea to our advantage. Hopefully they'll continue to loan us their best young prospects for the forseeable future too.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 I'd expect a promising young player from a major club like Chelsea to be loaned out to the Championship or even a lower level EPL club , so it may well be something of a minor coup that we've nabbed him . Let's wait and see how good he is before getting too carried away again , he could be another Jack Cork - or Adam Hammill .
Toadhall Saint Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 He sounds a good prospect - would have liked it to be a permanent move but hey thats life I suppose (especially if Chelski rate him that highly). It will be good to have a MF who can link up with the CF's cos at the mo' the gap between the MF & CF's is ridiculous which forces us to play long balls.
S-Clarke Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 I have a feeling he may have a similar sort of impact as Guthrie did when he came here. hope so anyway, because he was brilliant.
spyinthesky Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Surely this inexperienced youngster can't be better than Anthony Pulis?
S-Clarke Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Surely this inexperienced youngster can't be better than Anthony Pulis? TBH im better than Pulis.
niceandfriendly Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 TBH im better than Pulis. Have you ever seen Pulis play? Serious question, because I haven't which is ridiculous considering he's been here, what, 6 seasons now?
S-Clarke Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 (edited) Have you ever seen Pulis play? Serious question, because I haven't which is ridiculous considering he's been here, what, 6 seasons now? Saw a reserve game - awful. When wotte was in charge of the reserves i think, he failed to pass the ball more than 2 yards without giving it away. The only reason the kid is in football is because of his dad....there's a good reason he's only made 20 starts in his entire career...and he's 23/24 i think?.....i just checked, he's 25 FFS? and he's only made 20 professional appearances in football. When will he get the message and realise this isn't the career for him....! Edited 14 August, 2009 by S-Clarke
ottery st mary Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Pulis is only a second year Saints scholar...Give him time to develop.....The other ten years apprenticeship was at far inferior academies.
VectisSaint Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 A couple of characters from a Dickens novel. No need to bring that Skate into this

dubai_phil Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Like Forecast..He has another four years on his contract:rolleyes: You think THAT's bad, wait until we find out how much he's getting paid a week:mad:
dubai_phil Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 TBH im better than Pulis. TBH Hamster was better than Pulis He had FAR more pace AND staying power!
ottery st mary Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 You think THAT's bad, wait until we find out how much he's getting paid a week:mad: My sawce tells me that Stoke are monitoring his progress very closely..... We should tell them where to go.....They have taken tooooo many of our top players.
Webby Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Lallana needs to sort out what type of player he's going to be, cos at the moment he's bits and pieces of a good player if you know what I mean. He needs to focus on being one kind of player. Either a Joe Cole kind of wide man, or perhaps more like Jermaine Jenas, a box to box player. I really don't know what his best position is, and I don't think AP does yet either.
skintsaint Posted 14 August, 2009 Posted 14 August, 2009 Chelsea have a good relationship with Southampton, loaning them Jack Cork last season and allowing them to sign Jack Saville in April, and with Dean Wilkins - brother of Ray - in place as Assistant Manager at St. Mary’s, relations are becoming stronger." Can only be good for us until we overtake them in the PL.

Well hopefully with the wilkins link, he will be pretty decent as Ray would wants his bro to do well.

WestSaint Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Like Forecast..He has another four years on his contract:rolleyes: Perhaps its a goalkeeper 'thing' - Didn't Kasper Schmeichal sign for five years for Notts Co.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 yeah,I hope so. but Gobern,Thompson and White are decent attacking midfielders too, great prospects. If he is just marginally better,I think we would be better off playing one of them instead. If the new guy is very good,however..then my concerns are unfounded ! time will tell,I guess. I can't believe people don't think he'll be better than what we've got. He'll be light years better than Gobern et al. He is on the edge of the CHELSEA FIRST TEAM. Few quotes from Chelsea fans: 'Mellis is a really interesting player, based on what I saw last season. He's a bit like Lampard or Scholes with his ability to ghost into the penalty box late from midfield, but unlike them, he is extremely quick! Probably one of the fastest players in the squad.' 'a very attack minded, very energetic midfielder. hes similar to lampard really, likes to get in the box and score. he`ll do well at your level.' 'You've got yourself a real diamond here. He should do very well for you if he's given the right guidance.' 'He's been on the brinkg of making it onto the first tem at Chelsea a couple of times. Very good player and one that alot of people on here are holding out high hopes for. '
ottery st mary Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Perhaps its a goalkeeper 'thing' - Didn't Kasper Schmeichal sign for five years for Notts Co. I wish Forecast well, with his month at Grimsby.....Is he as good a goalkeeper as a five year contract warrants...I have no idea. Strange decision to pay/contract Forecast and Pulis without any real history to their careers. We already had goalkeepers and midfield players by the bucket load. Pulis should be loaned out to Aldershot or Brighton for 1-3 months.. then we would know what he is made of and whether he has a pro future. Personally we were steamrollered into some strange decisions. Mind you with AP and crew in place the incoming footballers will be the real deal......Harding, Lambert, Murty and now Melis proves the experience of real football peeps.
WestSaint Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 The problem with loaning out Pulis is that he has very little playing experience and what he has is woeful. What sort of club would therefore want him. Perhaps could do a deal with the any Saga transfer - buy one, get one free !!!
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Perhaps we could loan Pulis to P*mpey, they need a player or two...!

Rod Le Shearer Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 why Melis was brought in today,is a mistery to me. we got steamrollered even more after his introduction. we needed someone to win the ball at midfield, and thats not something one can expect from a 18 year old without experience ! poor managing.Melis should have been introducted when we are in control of a game (if that ever happens),or at home versus poor opposition.

Rod Le Shearer Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Who would you have brought on instead? thats a given: no-one from todays bench, and hoped/settled for a lucky draw.
saints_is_the_south Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Who would you have brought on instead? Saga or Paterson perhaps?
Rod Le Shearer Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Saga or Paterson perhaps? agree. Saga/paterson should have replaced Rasiak at around 60 minutes, for better workrate. defending starts with the strikers !
Junior Mullet Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Lallana needs to sort out what type of player he's going to be, cos at the moment he's bits and pieces of a good player if you know what I mean. Problem is I'm not sure there are any square holes in Southampton's plans in which case we should consider either selling him somewhere where they do or we make a square hole, bearing in mind what the consequences of doing so might be. At the moment we lack balance as a result trying to accomodate Ads out of position.
Window Cleaner Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 We don't need more kids like Mellis, we need hard assed seasoned pros.
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Rasiak and Lambert are one and the same, to play them together was rediculous, you need a player to play off either striker that works hard and provides. This was a mistake from AP
Arizona Posted 15 August, 2009 Posted 15 August, 2009 Lallana is like an aubergine in a porn film. Looks like he could be good, but we just can't seem to fit him in anywhere. He needs to learn to shoot and/or cross, sharpish.
