I wonder whether they're hanging back because a double unveiling is in the offing?

After so many years of rubbish news you know I didnt even stop to think if they could be waiting for better news. I am still half expecting the OS to come out and say its been a mistake and this Chelsea lad is signing for St Helens or somit. lol

The commentator on one of the You-Tube clips described him as a box to box player who likes to get forward.

Its the sort of player we need in midfield imo.

I've just gone through a couple of Chelsea web-sites and Melis was apparently "on the fringes" of the first team - think he'll be more than cover for us, if that's the case?

I would have preferred it if he actually got a game or two at that level as "on the fringes" still means that he was and is a reserve team player only. Let's hope he is better than the loans we had last season, which shouldn't be too difficult but at the same time I don't think it fair to build him up too much before he has a few games under Pardew.

On the fringes of the 1st team that is competing for Champions League, Prem and all cup competitions you would have thought a loan spell to the CCC would have done him more good. Why Chelsea are prepared to let him get knocked about in League 1 confuses me if he is that close to Prem football. Could just be that they hope he will turn out to be a 1st teamer for them but has allot to learn or they are dressing him up so they can ask for more money if we try and buy him in Jan.

Not saying its not a good move for us but think some of the wording is more window dressing than anything else.

We relied on a few loans last season, some worked and some didnt. Hopefully with the new owners we have a bit more room to filter out the chaff and just get the quality help we need. Looking better each week though so hopefully we will have a competitive team in time to push for playoffs.

Is he really going to get "knocked about" that much more in League One than he would in the CCC?

Why do people keeping on saying this sh:t? League One isn't pub football ffs.

This post seems to give the impression that a youngster who is only on the fringes of the Chelsea first team sint good enough for Saints in League One, and that we should really loan players with premiership experience.

Seriously? We are in League One...

I can see him playing defensive midfield for us, assuming we have a centre back lined up as well, of course.

Nice that he's versatile enough to threaten half the team's places though.

You're expecting one of the 'big four' © Sky Sports to loan us a first team box to box midfielder? Methinks you ask a little too much.

It's true that such loans are a bit hit and miss. But Cork did well for us, as did Potter before.

I have a great more faith in Pardew and Wilkins knowledge of Premier League clubs youth players, than the Dutch muppets. If you recall, Jan claimed to have known about Robertson for several seasons. So he was obviously Dutch 5th division standard.

I hope so, because we do not stand a chance of winning tomorrow without a new centre back. I hope AP can sort the defender deal out before tomorrow, but its looking very unlikely now though, with no firm rumours of anyone being linked and only 20 minutes left to sign until they would not be able to play tomorrow.

Looks a good signing on loan, if it all works out is there an option untill the end of the season??

Yep. If all parties agree - we can keep him for the whole season.

I was hoping for Sammy Hypia rather than another unknown Chelsea reject

. Explain to me, how being one of their highly rated youngsters, he is a reject?

"Jacob Mellis has this morning joined Southampton on loan, staying with the League One club until January 2nd, with an option to extend the deal for the entire season if all parties wish."

Source: http://www.cfcnet.co.uk/2009/08/14/mellis-becomes-a-temporary-saint/

The article goes on to say:

"It’s a traditional step to take for a player in his third year at the club, and one Jacob probably needed to have the opportunity to do. After excelling at reserve team level towards the end of last season, a further spell at this level with the transfer window closed wouldn’t have aided his development. Chelsea have a good relationship with Southampton, loaning them Jack Cork last season and allowing them to sign Jack Saville in April, and with Dean Wilkins - brother of Ray - in place as Assistant Manager at St. Mary’s, relations are becoming stronger."

"In terms of playing time, he’ll have a chance to make an impact, but with the team recently spending over £1m on Rickie Lambert, they may be looking to spend further before the end of August, and that will truly decide whether he plays often or not. He’s arguably good enough to prove useful to them, but now is the time for him to prove it."

It would be like saying Adam Lallana, Joseph Mills, Simon Gillett, Jake Thomson, etc. are Southampton rejects because we sent them out to get experience...in short...rubbish...

OK Pancake, I'll simplify for you - being on the fringes of the first team means **** all.

We are getting a reserve team player and a youngster at that. Maybe I've seen too many young reserve players failure when put in the first team so my expectations of his impact on the team is low at the moment.

I don' think that is a fair assessment of Jacob Mellis when he has attracted interest from Prem clubs whilst at Sheffield United, plus playing at various age levels of England .

This loan signing shows some indepth knowledge of the loan system from either AP or DW , I would say they have a bit more of an idea of this network than the Dutch Duo

Yeah...in depth knowledge of the network...

Either that or as discussed our number two is the brother of their number two...

I thought we loaned another Chelsea player last season when the JP was here.

I thought clubs loaned players all the time

Cork had first team experience at S****horpe and Bournemouth

Potter had played in Liverpools first team - started 6 and sub in 7.

I don't what to dampened people's optimism of players and the hcdajfu effect, but some prespective needs to be applied if we want to get out of this league as quickly as possible.

Well with AP & DW together they most prob have more knowledge of the potential youngsters than the previous management, lets face it Pulis, Forecast, Robertson, Thomas Pekhart ... I doubt they would have even got past the Fax machine bin if they were offered to us today I think AP is a well respected manager in the Uk and the fact that we are a league 1 team it will be difficult to attract some of the bigger names with a world cup pending , hence GR desire to put himself in the international shop window , networking with real managers like AP makes a big difference IMOH of course

Posted
With Pardew wanting other teams to fear us , mabe Jacob will be the real pace for Rickie ... looking more like AP & DW getting things in place for service for Rickie to be a goal machine for us.

Looking at the potential of Jacob , seems a bit more of an inspiring loan deal that was put together last year

Watching the videos he mostly plays attacking central midefield for Chelsea reserves with the odd cameo appearence on the right wing.

I reckon he'll be central midfield for us.

He's a right winger, used to play as an attacking right sided full back.

So a good signing in a position we're short in.

Well done Wilkins on this one...

Chelsea reserve player they signed from Sheff Utd in 07. Central Mid and CB

he is primarily an attacking midfielder but previously filled in at full-back and centre-back

So pretty much anywhere except in goal and left back then? :D

I just hope that another kid isn't going to leave us as lightweight as we were . 18 and in need of experience. I am not overwhelmed but hope that AP knows a lot more than the previous lot. Something which he has shown us so far. So, welcome jM and I hope you enjoy your stay with us and do us and chelsea proud.

He can, apparently also play at LB and in goal Both at the same time as he is a very good rush goalie!

But only if the goalposts are jumpers or tracksuit tops apperantly

Jacob’s arrival at Chelsea in 2007 was another of those deals that attracted more media attention than your average academy signing. Because he’d already played for Sheffield United’s reserve team at the age of 15, and because the reported fee was in the region of £1.5m, all eyes were on him.

From the first time he appeared in a blue shirt, onlookers could see why Chelsea wanted to bring him to London. Born in Nottingham and coming through the same youth set-up as Jermaine Jenas, it’s no surprise that the Spurs and England midfielder is Jacob’s role model and idol. They even bear a physical resemblance.

His best position is the same attacking central midfield role, although he can also play on the right if needed, and over the course of his first year at Chelsea was also tried at centre-back, with surprising success.

In his first showing in blue against Malmo in pre-season he was breathtakingly good, and was also impressive against Swindon. He quickly became a regular in the line-up and whilst it took him a while to find the back of the net, over the middle period of the season he netted crucial goals in big games, and made a big impact on Chelsea’s run to the FA Youth Cup Final.

When he plays in attacking midfield he’s given the license to drive into the penalty area in much the same way as Frank Lampard does. Comfortable on either foot and with a decent shot, defenders have to account for him, but his vision and touch allows him to use other players from dangerous positions.

At centre-back, he’s clearly not at home but was trusted with the role in the second leg of the FA Youth Cup Semi Finals at Aston Villa, and did a good job. His ball-playing skills from such a deep role allow Chelsea to build moves from deep, and whilst it’s not ever going to be a permanent role, it’s a useful position to have on your CV.

Becoming a reserve regular in 2008/09, his season started with injury problems but finished with a flourish, with excellent performances for the second string, and regularly finding the back of the net. His improvements didn’t go unnoticed, and he was named as a Premier League substitute for Chelsea’s home game against Everton. As he continues to impress, professional football at some level must be the next step.

Still nothing on the OS...........does this indicate he is training with the team this morning and the photos will be taken after.........or are they just slow ? :)

They are always slow aren't they !?
