NickG Posted 13 August, 2009 Share Posted 13 August, 2009 Good player. Wonder if Pardew was after more height at start of the season - started with perry, lallana, james, saga - schneiderlin not known for being great in the air.
John Boy Saint Posted 13 August, 2009 Share Posted 13 August, 2009 Blimey there are some jokers on this site "too lightweight for this division": he has done this division already, and was a major factor in getting the team he was playing with (Blackpool) out of this division. Blackpool begged to buy him but we refused to sell. The one thing I noticed last season when Gillett was in the team we had a better tempo to our play. Charlie Wayman Posted 13 August, 2009 Share Posted 13 August, 2009 Am I alone in not rating Gillett. Sure, he runs everywhere but the end product not there. He's popular on here in part for the effort and energy he puts into his game, which is no bad thing, but IMO he flatters to deceive. Don't think he achieved much either when he went out on loan in the past. Average squad player at most. Most unfair. He's a holding midfielder and even blindfold he'd have more idea of where to pass the ball than Wotton. This lad has world class potential so it must be that AP prefers not to play all four "gifted" youngsters at the same time. It won't always be like that as James & Morgan are gaining in stature by the match and AP will soon be able to take the risk of playing all four. Even Lallana is showing some signs of consciousness. Lallana and James look the most likely to get wide and down to the corners, so the other three must fight it out for the two defensive midfield positions. Clearly, AP thinks the soleil shineth forth from the derriere of Monsieur Schneiderlan (nez brun?) so he's relatively safe - anyway he's French under-19 Skip so automatic choice nes pas?. Poor old Wotton was given the big wagging finger several times on Tuesday so clearly hos adys are numbered. We've played 1 important game so far when Simon Gillett came on as sub so he's not far away from a start and certainly not out of the picture. Ringwood Saint Posted 13 August, 2009 Share Posted 13 August, 2009 I thought we missed him when he was injured towards the end of last season had a great game when he came back for the last home game.... although he needs to learn how to score, seem to remember he missed a sitter... Rasiak-9- Posted 13 August, 2009 Share Posted 13 August, 2009 He's infinately better than Wotton but Pards will wanna keep Wotton in the team as he's very big, brutal and vocal and of course adds experience. The fact that Gillett is by a far the better footballer and actually through his better positioning, speed, tackling and touch ends up adding far more toughness to our midfield than Wotton ever could seems to have been missed by Mr. Pardew. This is the thing, whilst Gillett and Schneiderlin don't go in with a crazy crunching tackle every five minutes and rarely foul their opponents doesn't mean they can't defend well. Often them being aware and composed enough to nick the ball away in the tackle and make quick interceptions is the best defensive asset we actually have. Course when Wotton gets involved, we see a big mad crunching tackle. With Wotton its not what you see but what you don't see thats the problem. You tend not to notice a player being out of position or easily bypassed in midfield because of his lack of pace and as a result Wottons rarely seen as a particularly weak link. What drives me insane though is Wotton's lack of ability to play a pass without taking at least 3 touches and 2 or 3 seconds to look up for a player, which slows our attack down every time we get the sodding ball and DOES make him stick out like the inept but good-intentioned yet unfortunately inadequete CM that he is. revolution saint Posted 13 August, 2009 Share Posted 13 August, 2009 I'm not sure it's a question of whether Gillett is better than Wotton but whether Gillett is actually that good. I don't think he is but that's opinions for you. I certainly can't see Gillett as a holding midfielder as some suggest though - he buzzes around a lot and would to my mind be more of a box to box type. Unfortunately I'm just not sure he's that great at it.
sydney_saint Posted 14 August, 2009 Share Posted 14 August, 2009 Since when has height been a factor to being a footballer? Yeah i'm sure Spain are really suffering from their lack of height. With no stats to back me up just imo about 75% of the greatest midfielders and attackers of all time would be under 5ft 10 What would be the point of having a tall midfielder that wins the ball in the air, but heads it straight back to the opposition? CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 14 August, 2009 Share Posted 14 August, 2009 As the season is only 2 games old it may well be a tad premature calling this a career crisis for Simon Gillett . While I recognise his technical limitations SG's 100% commitment to the cause and super attitude go along way towards meriting his inclusion . As for comparing Gillett with Wotton I'd say both have a similar level of ability but Gillett being much younger and more mobile has more to offer the team . Paul Wotton is a honest enough pro but time has not only caught up with him , it's overtaken him and can now see him disappearing in its rear view mirror . converted_saint Posted 14 August, 2009 Share Posted 14 August, 2009 God I love football! I love it how so many people can read things so differently. Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks Gillett's sh*te. Yes, he's got heart and he's up for the battle and while those are good qualities, you also need a bit of skill and I really don't think he's got what it takes. I totally disagree with those who think he was our best player last season (behind kelvin) because every time I saw him (so, every home game), I thought he was lightweight and gave the ball away virtually every time it was in his possession. And, having said all that, I'm also going to publicly declare myself a fan of Paul Wotton. I know I'm going to get lynched on here for saying that, but am I missing something given that I actually think he's pretty good?!?! Anyone with me?! ANYONE?! Chez Posted 14 August, 2009 Share Posted 14 August, 2009 I just wonder if Pardew is concerned about Gillets lack of height. Overall we are a small side so that extra bit of height can make a big difference at set peices etc. Other than that I have not idea why Wotton gets the place. He is the midfield version of Darren Powell IMO.
