Meeting 'Saints'

Sorry, have to have my two penneth. I read the original post and wasn't going to respond but now feel I have to.

Can you put the boot on the other foot? Had you been having a private conversation with a friend of yours and an eight year old come up and call you a scummer and his dad / grandfather laughed would you think it was good fun? I know I wouldn't and I'd be horrified if my children would do something like that.

Exactly, all our halo's slip occasionally but two wrongs don't make a right especially when they were called 'scummers' in a completely unrelated incident.

There is a fine line between good natured banter and encouraging a breeding ground for future football related thuggery and hateful prejudice. IMO laughing off a situation where an 8 year old calls a complete stranger a skate is crossing that line and wrong on so many levels not least his own safety.

I actually agree with Tractor Saint and NC on this. Banter is fine, but the scenario of meeting someone on holiday and exchanging pleasantries and/or tounge-in-cheek insults is not the same as the one where an unsolicited shout of "Skate" is aimed at someone minding their own business.

Do I take it 19C, that you are the illegitimate son of Mother Teresa and Ghandi and have the absolute right to sit in judgement of others and my nephews in particular. Why is it that you feel you have to bless us all with your views of the world. Most of us are not interested in what you think, but I feel that you have again achieved your aim which seems to be the constant winding up of all and sundry. I for one choose to ignore you in the future.

I wasn't judging your nephews but questioning the reaction of their Guardians on this occasion. I'm not exactly alone in thinking their behaviour should have been admonished as opposed to laughed at and seemingly with a sense of pride by posting the story on here.

I enjoyed the story. The account of how CM sees his kids knowing right from wrong yet being able to stick up for themselves was spot in my view.

Just a bit of fun, don't make a drama out of it. Try concentrating on how you communicate with others before judging whether a young Saints fan is allowed to make a light hearted comment, having no doubt been on the receiving end of similar banter before.

Judge not lest ye be judged and all that guff about motes in eyes, let he who is without sin cast the first stone, pots and kettles, people in glasshouses throwing stones, etc,

IMO still inappropriate behaviour for an 8 year old and if they have a moral code as you state then there is no excuse to reverting to the level of the blue few in an unrelated incident.

What was that you said about self-importance 19c? I don't think you're in any position to question another person's kid's 'moral code'. You may not mean to, but you come across as a stuffy schoolmistress from the 1950s. They call us scummers, we call them skates; they're nicknames that nobody I have ever met takes real offense to, it's not as if the kid hurled a barrage of four-letter words at the woman. Get over it.

Spot on.

I had a football related conversation with a P*mpey fan last night, and we called each other "scummer" and "skate" all the way through it. No-one took offence, it's called banter, and it seems that 19C obviously has no idea what banter is. I came back onto this thread hoping to see people talking about meeting Saints elsewhere, was even going to post my own thread-related anecdote, but it seems once again Nineteen Canteen has just completely ruined a thread with absolute tosh and drivel.

You have not read my comments and tried to address the points I have made.

It is not a 'light hearted comment' and being called a 'scummer' is not reason enough to insult someone completely unconnected to that incident a skate. It's prejudicial hatred and do we hate all groups of people because of a few extremists?

FFS the PC brigade are out in force today !

The OP was not in the slightest controversial and yet on here it has been turned into a 'sad indictment of society today' !

19C and his cohorts really ought to get a grip, there is a big wide world out there and normal people actually manage to 'live and let live', you should give it a try !!

You should perhaps re-read the OP. How the hell this thread got turned into a depressingly dim version of the Moral Maze beats me.

Because a head mentalist decided to stick his oar in, as usual, and ruin another thread.

I wonder if he remembers a infamous copy of TUI? If he does, then he'll understand my feelings towards him.

You are definitely blowing this out of all proportion. Just drop it already.

On a side note, I think football forums are too small for you. Have you ever considered going into politics? You seem to have many of the qualities that make a politician. Arrogance, pig-headedness and being somewhat out of touch with the realities of life. Apologies if I am making overblown assumptions about you personally, I must have been influenced by the nature of your previous ramblings.

Yup - re-read it and the OP states:

My eight year old heard this and said "SKATE!" The other said "Come on you reds!" Needless to say the 'Saint' and I laughed our socks off.

Perhaps it's because I'm living in a PO postcode that I'd be mortified if one of my children said that to complete strangers round here and maybe it's acceptable elsewhere. No issues with friendly banter when you've got a skate mate but, IMHO kids shouldn't be encouraged to call complete strangers 'Skates' or, if they do, they understand any consequences.

Its real simple. If someone calls my boys a 'scummer' they will call them a skate. They dont go shouting skates at them first - its me calling them 'fish *****ers'!

They understand the consequences - well as much as 6 & 8 year olds understand the consequence of anything.

Chill out!

Extremely poor parenting in my opinion. You are setting an example which your children will follow. They will, almost undoubtedly, be poorly behaved in school and then, when told off by their teachers, you will go into the school, cause a scene and say that they were just having a laugh and that the teacher should "chill out". I've seen your like before.

Ditto - and normally wearing a football shirt to parents evening. It wasn't until my very late teens that I actually heard my Dad swear in front of us. If a parent only achieves one objective it surely must be to teach their children how to be decent human beings and treat others how they would wish to be treated themselves. The posts defending the upbringing and actions of this 8 year old is a sad indictment of society today - personally I call it the 'Kyle Culture'.

Perhaps more worryingly the adults this lad obviously worships will not always be there to save him as he grows up.

I am joking FFS! I dont go out shouting at people.

FWIW Oldest boy is performing above average for his age & middle boy is about to get enrolled on the gifted & talented programme with exam results 2 years above his age & a reading age of 10 years & 9 months. He has been training up at Stoke & has more determination & enthusiasm than most if not all his peers. Hasper - his grandad tought at various universities & I have 2 degrees! I am a terrible example for my boys - get up & go to work, play with them, read with them, spend time with them, tell them I love them - absolutely f'ing shocking example - call social services!

How are your kids doing then Wiltshire? Or are you the kind of guy that judges others kids without having any yourself?

I repeat - CHILL OUT!

And by the way - I have seen your like before - so uptight that when they explode they make the front page of national newspapers! Or hide behind computer screens watching criticising & watching porn!

Everything you write shows all of us exactly how you were bought up! You are a very poor listener who is also very immature & actually not very bright.

I am going to ask my wife if I can wear my Saints shirt to the next parents evening. That is if I can be bothered to go at all!

Tell me, where did you go to school? Did you get thrashed? Buggered maybe? Are you repressed? And when do you get time to watch Jeremy Kyle?

Are you still bitter that all the financial stuff I wrote on this forum about Rupert was proved right? Financial mis-management, inept personal skills, failed bond trader at Morgan Grenfell, immoral share buy backs etc etc

Before some witless idiots go off on a Victorian morals type rant about falling standards of decency, poor upbringing, prejudice and incitement to violence, etc. the original post needs to be reread. Just to save those idiots the effort of having to scroll back, I'll repost it for their benefit.

Just returned (half an hour ago) from a visit to the Ironbridge (built in 1779 when Saints were at their zenith!)with my Grandsons. Whilst walking back across I heard a conversation going on with four people (two men two women) One of the women said "Oh! No. I'm a Pompey girl. He supports Southampton" My eight year old heard this and said "SKATE!" The other said "Come on you reds!" Needless to say the 'Saint' and I laughed our socks off. We had a quick chat. He'll be at St Marys for the 22nd. It's the strangest place I've met another Saint although Pilchards and family sat in the row in front of us (my family) in Seaworld in Florida some time ago!

Do you see the bit I highlighted in bold? They had a quick chat. What do you infer by that? I took it to mean that they exchanged a bit of light-hearted banter, or possibly even had a serious discussion about the relative positions that the two clubs found themselves in.

If the two or three on here who went off half-c ock in a tangent saw it differently, then the problem is with them and they ought to learn a little more about inter-personal relationships with their fellow human beings, as they show scant understanding in it.

Sorry to be naive but what is 'Kyle Culture'?

I'm also at a loss as to how the leap of calling someone a skate in recounting a story when not all facts are known has led to the social ills of society today.

As the Pompey girl isn't around to give her side of the meeting, we don't know if she is psychologically traumatised in some way or didn't give it a second thought. It's not like it's some study on conformity!

Why on Why Wes - I think you're the one with the back catalogue of letters to Took , Robinson and Wogan. It's to do with your writing style and need to dissect every syllable in an effort to prove the original poster wrong as oppose to simply posting your own views. See me

Corky, for the record I stand by my opinions and whilst I may not be the sharpest tool in the box I do know how to parent my kids and avoid regaling foolish stories about them on Internet forums.

You clearly regret the actions of Hasper and now feel the need to defend them of their actions and those of your son by telling us all what a bright family you are. Bottom line we are all nothing more than the total sum of our own experience and some very intelligent people can also be our biggest thugs IMO as easily as they can also be sadly naive and without common sense.

Who said anything about watching Kyle @ 9.30am in the morning if that was what you were alluding to. He use to have a radio show in Manchester, has written a book, has a Sunday show on Talksport and for those who are interested in the horrors of some parts of modern day Britain his daytime show is looped continously on ITV 29 or whatever - check your EPG. The man is a spanner but I doubt even he would condone your defence.

As for Lowe, well done, having worked in the city for many years I can assure you there are thousands more like him earning huge amounts of money and if they fail at one thing they often have the intelligence without the education to morph themselves into another role by playing the game hence he took on a senior role in Derivatives after Deutsche waltzed in- bonds without the paperwork if you like.

Relatively speaking Lowe and many others may have failed but were onto a more successful career before you had decided to finishing your schooling unsure I guess how to turn all that academic stuff into real life whilst ensuring you could get away with working for just the 36 weeks a year. There lies the rub and perhaps you are a victim of your own intelligence - academic - not of practical relevance.

Try and listen to some practical advice - tell your kids not to shout insults at strangers especially if they come across as precocious smart ar5es to boot - quite literally.

Disgusting? Your word not mine and yes Saints fans do have a few bad apples just as if i was posting on any other minority forum. Not all the dreggs of society on the Kyle show are Saints fans are they so please don't make me out to be 'disgusted by Saints fans'. Just happens I am making a comment about a saints fan regarding his post on a saints forum kinda goes with the territory or shall we all have a love in?

So not debate then - just argument for arguments sake.

Nineteen doesn't like debate, as too many find it easy to shoot his points down in flames. He much prefers to hide under moral indignation, to look up some pithy quotation on Google to make him look intelligent, or to change the subject when the going gets tough for him, attempting to defend the indefensible. Otherwise, like a true troll, he will either start a controversial thread, or enter some controversial viewpoint into a perfectly normal light-hearted thread just to get a reaction.

Don't take him too seriously, MOG. Have a good laugh at his efforts instead. Poke fun at him. It's the obvious way to burst his little bubble.

The only thing I regret is engaging with you!

So you worked in the city, with jonah maybe? Then you should have understood exactly how much of an imbecile Rupert was. The biggest mercenary in football & that is saying something. From what I hear, he only has a couple of supporters left at WH Ireland - so he wont be there very long either! (I work for a city company too 19C!)

Why dont you take some advice from me? - Dont judge my kids & I wont judge yours. Mine are doing rather well thank you very much. Based on sound parenting. They have a passion for football & Southampton inparticular.

Maybe I will see you on the motorway on Saturday when we are making our 400 mile round trip? Maybe I wont. Lads, Dad & Grandad. Even a nephew! You can never replace any of that with your sanctimonious ramblings!

Corky,

I'm reminded of the joke where a guy visits the local mental hospital and strolling through the grounds, encounters one of the patients dangling a fishing rod into a flower bed.

Thinking that he'd got a right one here, he decided to humour him and start a friendly conversation. He asks the patient how many he's caught today, to which the patient responds with a grin on his face, "you're the fourth today".

Sanctomonoius? I'm not the one telling everyone what a great fan I am either by undertaking a 400 mile round trip for a home game. Well done you have plenty of time to teach your kids a few more choice phrases to abuse strangers with. Clearly, you don't actually work in the city and for all I know you could be filling up the cashpoints in Barclay's Stoke-on-Trent. Bet I'm right - work for a city company - talk about trying to big yourself up , you ought to apply for a transfer with those degrees although I doubt head office require a cashier.

I don't care about Rupert Lowe but I do know one of the advantages of city life is the incestuous networking and why he may not have many friends at WH Ireland as you allege he has far more influential friends as I understand it at the likes of Goldman Sachs, former home of........? Funny old world, if you live in it.

Wes, as usual you ruin the basis of a good attack by referring to me as a troll. I'm no more a troll as you are a stalker and the reason being is because I don't just post an opinion to antagonise I post an opinion and provide my reasons and can stick to it safe in the knowledge that is what I believe in. A troll will post anything and everything and regardless of any knowledge. Are you a troll Wes?

Oh btw I do debate as you know but rarely with you as I guess you can say i have entered the second half of my life where all of a sudden you realise time is precious and I can't be wasting it, talking with boycotting windbags like yourself.
