Saints vs No'ton - FULL TIME (2-0, Lambert '29, Lallana '68)

Pardew interviewed: Step in right direction, we're difficult opposition, pleased with clean sheet, praised Ricky Lambert - steel, leadership; Rasiak has been unsettled, but will have loved cameo with RL; Paterson coming on nicely; maybe one more signing this week;

Lol reminds me of the famous Colemanball ( only it was attributed to him in error ) "Juantorena opens his legs and shows his class ! "

Every year at the Rugby 7's here we let the Ladies onto the main pitch for their tournament final.

The commentator uses that one EVERY year, but after 4,972 beers it is much funnier!

Good interview with Alan P

Being very pragmatic about where we are at present. What I really liked was

that he came across as calm and collected. Knows we have a fair bit of work to do. Its clear he wants to keep rasiak, His comment re the grass is not always greener on the other side is very true and I sincerely hope that Raisiak

does see sense and stays.

Good result, well battled. There were some mighty shaky moments, though, just like on Saturday, when they all, to a man, seemed to have some sort of collective brainstorm and just froze on the pitch. It was bizarre, as for whole stretches they clearly outclassed Northampton, and then they would just go Tyro. So, it clearly made sense to field the whole first team - they need as many games together as they can get!

Something to do with a yellow submarine.

Will be good if it catches on round the whole stadium

Have just seen the goals on SSN. Lambert is not afraid to get stuck in, stooped down extremely well for the header. Lallana showed an excellent touch for his goal and according to the guy watching on there he was MOTM.

Just got back. Not a bad performance all in all. Didn`t take the game by the scruff of the neck but didn`t look like losing. Lambert looked very good in all areas of his game. Lambert and Rasiak look like they could be a very good combination. Gate of 11,000 made it a decent atmosphere as well.

Just back from the match. Really it was quite comfortable for us. Nothampton made some changes early in the second half and for a while looked a bit more determined and dangerous, but the defence was resolute and steadfast and repelled all attacks. I don't know whether it was the case that Perry was slightly injured, or whether Pardew thought it was a good opportunity to give Lancashire a run out in a cup match, but with Thomas, Harding and Murty in support, he didn't do much wrong. Thomas got virtually everything in the air and both Murty and Harding were again exemplary.

The midfield was also solid, but it got frustrating witnessing Wotton's total lack of imagination, always passing the ball sideways or back for large parts of the first half. Perhaps Pardew had a word in his shell-like at half time, as he was much more positive in playing it upfield the second half. Schneiderlin grows in stature and competance with each game. Lallana had a really good game and closed down and made some good tackles. His passing was also good and his goal well taken.

In the first half, Paterson put himself about and caused problems for the defence in partnership with Lambert. Lambert, particularly in the first half, was quite a revelation, looking a cut above most of the other players on the pitch, dangerous in the last third, good positioning and holding up of the ball, but also a great team player, making some killer passes in and around the box. When he was partnered by Rasiak, it did look like a very fruitful teaming in prospect and if Rasiak stays, I believe that they could forge a deadly partnership. Lambert looks the real deal and value even at that price in this division. I have no doubt that he has the ability to top score in this division again, particularly with the service he will get from this developing team.

I had thought that Lambert had been brought off 4 minutes from the end so that he could have received his standing ovation on his debute, but I could be wrong.

Overall, a very good performance from most, a real change from the play last season and at last it looks as if we are not too far short of having an exciting and hardworking team, playing as a team, a decent blend of youth and experience, with 2/3 potential captains here already.

heard that Lambert asked to be taken off and hada large icepack on knee, any other sightings or just my sister who was at the game winding me up?

can anyone elaborate on this?

he was limping and holding his knee for a few mins before he came off.

Pardew didn't mention it after game so hopefully nothing major.

OK

Kelvin - didn't really have much to do

Lancashire - some good stuff but not strong enough

Thomas -didn't seem totally controlling their forwards

Wooton - again good effort but first touch and passing not quite up to it

Murty - good steady influence

Good

Harding - lots of positive running, good passing and defending - v good signing

Schneiderlin - not as involved as Saturday but his passing is class above, has time on the ball

Lallana - seemed to get better as game went on, stayed wider, some good touches, crosses and scored.

Paterson - good touch and high energy

Rasiak - seemed up for it again. Good header back for second goal and their defence looked worried when he was on the ball

V Good

Lambert - looks what we were told, strong, always looking to shoot, won everything in air in first half, good passing and holding play and scored.

James- MOM, excellent energy, running, crossing - made the goal.

Wes Tender, I agree with most of your post there... Lancashire though.. hmmmmm, i just dont think he is up to it, the amount of times he gave away free kicks and unforced errors in the first half was not good at all.. i think he could benefit going on loan to a league two team for a couple of months.

Also I was sat infront of the directors box tonight, and Kevin Bond and Dennis Rofe was in attendance, deep in conversation and pointing to one or two players, Bond left the moment Lallana had scored.

He did take a knock just before he came off - jumping for ball in penalty area - but not to serious hopefully

Oooh and NickG totally agree with MOM - James for us too :-)

We played quite well. We didn't really have to move out of 1st gear in all honesty, i thought Northampton were woeful.

Lambert looked great, he'll get even better once the players know how to use him. Some of his touches were great and the way he held the ball up and played the ball to the flanks was excellent.

His goal was a typical brave strikers goal - very similar to a goal beattie would have scored and in many ways his game is similar to Beats.

Next best player tonight was Adam IMO - he wasn't ''amazing'' but he seemed to hold his position much better than on saturday and actually attempted to get to the byline - which caused them problems.

Quite excited by Pard's interview, more players in the pipe line - seems like the cheque book has been well and truly opened.

All in all - comfortable and a nice confidence booster for us to go to Huddersfield with.

P.S on a final note - im sure i saw someone in here mention ''Akenfenwa'' as a signing for us. Seriously???? I've never seen such a lumbering overweight player in my life....he brought a bit of comedy value to the game.

Just in from work reading the last few post's seems like we've got ourselves a gem in Lambert, glad he got off the mark so quickly, things do seem to be coming together. How did Rasiak perform did he look up for it, could we do what seems impossible & keep him?

He came on and with his first touch set up Adam for the 2nd.

Looked lively and committed, seemed willing to collect the ball rather than just standing around waiting for it.

The way Pard's spoke on the radio - he's keen to keep him and hopefully we can persuade greg.

Thought Lambert's goal was sublime. Great pass out wide, then knew exactly what to do in getting into the box and stooping for the header. Overall, another steady performance, didn't set the world alight but then we weren't required to. Hearing Pards, it sounds as if another day of F5ing beckons tomorrow!

That seems promising then Cheers for that S-Clarke would be good if we could keep him. Wonder if he'd be prepared to stay as now one seems prepared to pay him what he's getting here?

Pretty decent game, didn't get going until about 20 minutes but after that it was fine.

Harding was my stand out performer, that guy is a proper left back and loves to get forward. Very strong in the tackle too.

Murty had another good game. He's a very good crosser of the ball which'll be perfect for Lambert and Rasiak.

Morgan had the best game I've ever seen him play. His range of passing was very good and he actually attempted to make some challenges which is encouraging.

Lambert seems like just the player we heard about. Slow and doesn't move much but brings people into play, has a great first touch and can score goals. He looks a very decent buy.

Paterson ran around like a nutter but also had a bit of skill about him and played well.

I hope we have another case of ''wife pulling'' power here.

She wants to stay in New Milton tbh.

Lambert was good in the 1st half, but did very

little in the second.

Agree with you SS on that - didn't think we performed that well in the 2nd half and the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half appeared to be all Northampton.

Lallana was my MoM with James coming a close 2nd. Some good foundations there and everyone apart from Wotton seemed to have sparks of brilliance.

Excellent result that we were the largest crowd of all the games tonight but feel sorry for those that were in the ticket queues that are the largest I've ever seen and went on for ever!

How big was there number 10 by the way. This sort of player will bully Ollie L

twice as fat as Stern John.

Lambert was awesome

Davis 6 nothing to do

Murty 6 solid

Harding 7 some good running and defensive play

Thomas 8 won every header until Akinfenwa came on

Lancashire 6 okay but a few dodgy headers

James 8 Always looking to spread play and create openings before the game opened up and when it did he made some good chances

Wotton 6 steady

Morgan 7 some good passing and tackling

Lallana 7 better than Millwall but still wasted at time on the left

Paterson 6 ran around a bit when we didn't have the ball but didn't look hungry, no movement

Lambert 9 strong, determined, skillful and was quality in the 1st half but fairly quiet 2nd half

Subs:

Rasiak 7 skillful never understood why people say he's so lazy or slow he's got flair

Gobern 6 some good touches

Thomson 6 one good run to the byline and cross needs more time in the team

Needs to get a partnership up with Pato/Rasiak and gain some understanding

I agree that Lambert seemed to fade in the 2nd half but I think the the reason for it was that Stuart Gray stuck 2 players on him in the 2nd half which is one of the reasons Rasiak got a free header at the far post as soon as he came on to knock back for Lallana's goal.

Good analysis but I'd have had Thomas in your V Good category! He was strong as an ox, won everything in the air and looked like scoring from corners too. We need the muscle!

not sure about Thomas on tonights, seeing others views accept probably got him wrong - did win the ball a lot, but thought there were lots of gaps - possibly lack of understanding between him and Lancashire?

Happy to keep Thomas in side.

Agree with most of that, although I would move Harding into V.Good, had an excellent game I thought. James was also my MOM.

having seen the game tonight I really hope that Pardew persuades Rasiak to stay. With him, Paterson and Lambert sharing the strikers roles we could see plenty of goals.

Wooton doesn't cut it for me, decent journeyman midfielder with a strong engine but a little short on pace and def. short on imagination. I'd prefer to see Gillet there, but I presume this is the gap that Pardew is going to fill next.

Still work in progress but there is a steel to the team that was sadly lacking last season, I would prefer to see us playing from the back more though, we used the kick from Kelvin too often IMO.

Strange how we all see this game so differently- I thought Thomas and Harding were really good last night and that James' crossing was poor except for the goal- I counted about 4 times when he had 2 strikers to put his cross in to and dropped it in between them each time to a Northampton player! I am a bit concerned that Lambert might not make Saturday- he knew straight away he needed to come off and was stretching his hamstring.

My thoughts on the game

Overall, a good night's work with little to complain about

Players

Davis - 7 - not much to do, but we still look vulnerable at corners

Murty - 7.5 - very solid all round

Harding - 7 - again, hard to find fault

Lancashire - 6.5 - he still gets muscled out of it too often

Thomas - 6.5 - wins a lot of headers, but was caught napping several times & his distribution is poor

Lallana - 7.5 - looks fitter and stronger this season, worked hard all night

James - 8 - Proof that good crosses are more important than mazy dribbling & he & Murty linked up well all night

Wotton - 6.5 -Is it the Wilkins family influence - passing back or square rather than forward?

Schneiderlin - 8 - He looks a bit bigger and tougher this season and is a class above on the ball

Lambert - 7.5 - Does exactly what it says on the tin. Never going to be pretty football with him, but he is a big, strong awkward handful for any defence. (How we could have done with him last season....)

Paterson - 7 - Worked hard and complemented Lambert well

subs

Rasiak - 7.5 - Still looks nothing special until he comes alive in the penalty area. Would be good to keep him this season

Thompson - 7 - Not a bad lad to be able to bring off the bench

Gobern - 7 - ditto. Both these lads are going to get the chance to develop at the right pace this season
