Have had an argument with my son who reckons that Pardew was a forward player in his day but I reckon that he was always a defender !!

Can anybody provide some proof that I am right (as always!) and he is wrong ????

Tks !

I was working in South London at the time and I recall Alan Pardew as a key member of the Palace team (along with Ian Wright, Mark Bright, Andy Thorne, Nigel Martin, Geoff Thomas etc) that went all the way to FA Cup final around 89/90/91 ish. I recall he was a midfielder .. definately not a striker ..

ok so found the lineups for the Palace v liverpool semi final in 1990.

It is fairly clear to me from this he was not a defender, but a midfielder. I seem to recall Palace only playing one up front which would have been Bright and the defence was deffo Pemberton, Shaw, O'Reilly and Thorn.

Martyn, J.Pemberton, R.Shaw, A.Gray, G.O'Reilly, A.Thorn, P.Barber, G.Thomas, M.Bright, J.Salako, A.Pardew.

Liverpool: B.Grobbelaar, G.Hysen, D.Burrows, G.Gillespie (B.Venison), R.Whelan, A.Hansen, P.Beardsley, R.Houghton, I.Rush (S.Staunton), J.Barnes, S.McMahon.

So as usual old man you think your right, but as always in reality i am :)

Pardew was the one that headed the winner in the Liverpool semi-final in 1990. According to the match report he played in midfield that day.

"Geoff Thomas was also beginning to look the most influential player in the middle of the park where he was keenly assisted by Pardew and Gray in wresting control from Whelan and McMahon."

"Extra time could not be as frenetic as the second half had been but Palace continued to more than hold their own. They looked slightly the stronger side and still carried the greater threat whenever they gained a dead ball situation.

Four minutes into the second period this threat was confirmed when Thorn flicked on a Gray corner at the near post and Pardew was the man arriving at the far post to head home what would prove to be the winner. " AET Crystal Palace 4 Liverpool 3

Oh and to add to that on Wiki it states the following:

Pardew moved to Charlton Athletic in November 1991, and was Charlton's top scorer in the 1992–93 season with ten goals.[3]

Not sure a defender of Charlton's would ever have managed to be top scorer with 10 goals in one season.

In actual fact, if you think about it the Crystal Palace experience will probably have had a huge impact on his management style. CP were managed by Steve Coppell, played with people like Wrighty, Brighty, Salako and Geoff Thomas (so knows that you need to mix hard work with a bit of skill (Wrighty not Thomas :-)) and endured the 9-0 whupping at Anfield which probably left a desire never to be that embarrassed again!

Watched that game in the Royal Oak in Millbrook, remember the goal well as a couple of Liverpool fans were mates, didn't remember him though, lets hope in 19 years time I will have something to remember him by.

1 game v the Scousers does not prove that he was not a defender!

Does anybody on here have direct contact to him to actually ask him ??

I think my post that he was charltons top scorer in the 92/93 season proves he was not a defender. I can't recall any top flight defender ever scoring 10 goals in season!

He was a defender or defensive midfielder - never a striker!

HTH

Never said he was a striker another thing the old man got wrong. I said he was a midfielder, in fairness he could have been a defensive midfielder, but a midfielder non the less.

Or an 'attack minded' defender !!

He was a centre mid, liked to push on and chipped in with a decent return for us.

Certainly much preferred at the Valley as a player than as a manager !
