eurosaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Have had an argument with my son who reckons that Pardew was a forward player in his day but I reckon that he was always a defender !! Can anybody provide some proof that I am right (as always!) and he is wrong ???? Tks !
stevegrant Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=6101 Defender. Although his Wikipedia page suggests he's a midfielder...
Saint Stimp Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 http://lmgtfy.com/?q=alan+pardew+playing+position
KK the 2nd Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 I was working in South London at the time and I recall Alan Pardew as a key member of the Palace team (along with Ian Wright, Mark Bright, Andy Thorne, Nigel Martin, Geoff Thomas etc) that went all the way to FA Cup final around 89/90/91 ish. I recall he was a midfielder .. definately not a striker ..
eurosaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Author Posted 10 August, 2009 http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=6101 On here it says defender ! Of the first 3 posts on this thread we have mention of defender, attacker and midfielder ! Either he was very versatile or nobody knows anything !!!!
Crab Lungs Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Your recall is prob better than mine, so I will settle for a midfielder
Weston Super Saint Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Absolutely sure he was a striker. If he was, he wasn't a very good one 299 aps and 32 goals isn't the stuff of legend.
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 ok so just to clarify, i am Eurosaints son and i was around 10 at the time Pardew was playing and just to correct him, i was claiming he was a midfielder not an attacker!
Crab Lungs Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 If he was, he wasn't a very good one 299 aps and 32 goals isn't the stuff of legend. Blimey... better ratio than Ian Ormondroyd though?
Weston Super Saint Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 ok so just to clarify, i am Eurosaints son and i was around 10 at the time Pardew was playing and just to correct him, i was claiming he was a midfielder not an attacker! Attacking or defensive midfielder
eurosaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Author Posted 10 August, 2009 I saw him play many times for CP against Saints and he never ventured over the halfway line so I must be right, no ????
KK the 2nd Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Attacking or defensive midfielder .. that could well be the reason for the confusion!! .. though we can say for sure that he wasn't a keeper!!
Chez Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Blimey... better ratio than Ian Ormondroyd though? didn't have the looks though.
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 ok so found the lineups for the Palace v liverpool semi final in 1990. It is fairly clear to me from this he was not a defender, but a midfielder. I seem to recall Palace only playing one up front which would have been Bright and the defence was deffo Pemberton, Shaw, O'Reilly and Thorn. Martyn, J.Pemberton, R.Shaw, A.Gray, G.O'Reilly, A.Thorn, P.Barber, G.Thomas, M.Bright, J.Salako, A.Pardew. Liverpool: B.Grobbelaar, G.Hysen, D.Burrows, G.Gillespie (B.Venison), R.Whelan, A.Hansen, P.Beardsley, R.Houghton, I.Rush (S.Staunton), J.Barnes, S.McMahon. So as usual old man you think your right, but as always in reality i am
GullyGully Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Pardew was the one that headed the winner in the Liverpool semi-final in 1990. According to the match report he played in midfield that day. "Geoff Thomas was also beginning to look the most influential player in the middle of the park where he was keenly assisted by Pardew and Gray in wresting control from Whelan and McMahon." Full Time: Crystal Palace 3 Liverpool 3 "Extra time could not be as frenetic as the second half had been but Palace continued to more than hold their own. They looked slightly the stronger side and still carried the greater threat whenever they gained a dead ball situation. Four minutes into the second period this threat was confirmed when Thorn flicked on a Gray corner at the near post and Pardew was the man arriving at the far post to head home what would prove to be the winner. " AET Crystal Palace 4 Liverpool 3
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Oh and to add to that on Wiki it states the following: Pardew moved to Charlton Athletic in November 1991, and was Charlton's top scorer in the 1992–93 season with ten goals.[3] Not sure a defender of Charlton's would ever have managed to be top scorer with 10 goals in one season.
GullyGully Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 In actual fact, if you think about it the Crystal Palace experience will probably have had a huge impact on his management style. CP were managed by Steve Coppell, played with people like Wrighty, Brighty, Salako and Geoff Thomas (so knows that you need to mix hard work with a bit of skill (Wrighty not Thomas :-)) and endured the 9-0 whupping at Anfield which probably left a desire never to be that embarrassed again!
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Thanks everyone for proving me right on this one
eurosaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Author Posted 10 August, 2009 1 game v the Scousers does not prove that he was not a defender! Does anybody on here have direct contact to him to actually ask him ??
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Pardew was the one that headed the winner in the Liverpool semi-final in 1990. According to the match report he played in midfield that day. Watched that game in the Royal Oak in Millbrook, remember the goal well as a couple of Liverpool fans were mates, didn't remember him though, lets hope in 19 years time I will have something to remember him by.
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 1 game v the Scousers does not prove that he was not a defender! Does anybody on here have direct contact to him to actually ask him ?? I think my post that he was charltons top scorer in the 92/93 season proves he was not a defender. I can't recall any top flight defender ever scoring 10 goals in season!
Big Ron fan Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 He was a defender or defensive midfielder - never a striker! HTH
Hatch Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 I think my post that he was charltons top scorer in the 92/93 season proves he was not a defender. I can't recall any top flight defender ever scoring 10 goals in season! Steve Bruce
Hatch Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 and also this thread has reminded me that it was Alan PArdew that got in trouble on the BBC last year for his rape comment.
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 He was a defender or defensive midfielder - never a striker! HTH Never said he was a striker another thing the old man got wrong. I said he was a midfielder, in fairness he could have been a defensive midfielder, but a midfielder non the less.
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Steve Bruce Ok fair enough, but he was a Manure defender in many a title winning season. Pardew played for lower half teams in Palace and Charlton.
eurosaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Author Posted 10 August, 2009 Never said he was a striker another thing the old man got wrong. I said he was a midfielder, in fairness he could have been a defensive midfielder, but a midfielder non the less. Or an 'attack minded' defender !!
Alright Dave Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Or an 'attack minded' defender !! or just a midfielder as i have said all along
scott_saints Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Glad we have reached a soilid conclusion on the subject.
eurosaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Author Posted 10 August, 2009 Oh well, not very sure what his exact position was as a player but I sincerely hope that he becomes a manager with 'striking' success !!!!
AFKA Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 He was a centre mid, liked to push on and chipped in with a decent return for us. Certainly much preferred at the Valley as a player than as a manager !
