Colinjb Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 I understand that the club crest came about after a competition was held in the 60's/early 70's. I would love to know who designed it! For no reason other then my own curiosity.

Badger Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Seem to remember it was towards the end of 1973/4 season during the midst of a relegation struggle.
unionhotel Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Yeah, just after I got a tattoo of the old crest!
diggers Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 the latest incarnation was tweaked by a Soton Co called Graphic Workshop who got paid by Lowe with 6 season tickets for five years. This was back in the 90's I think. One of the changes was to the ball design, the other was a subtle change to the pattern on the rose. The original design was indeed a compo winner I think.
Puddings and Monkeys Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 I used to work with a girl whose surname was Fretwell. She new nothing about football but claimed that he father desigend it and it was a a competition.
sotonpride Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Rolland Parris designed it in 1973. Got £50 for it. Season Ticket Holder for 50 years - still goes to most games - he was at the game on Sat - he's now 79. He's my dad so not sure who the girl named Fretwell was? Not one of my sisters, unless he had an illegitimate I don't know about!

Might help to settle some of the "disputes" that crop up over what exactly certain bits represent.

The tree = Fair Oak The water = The old lido in town The flower = the Dutch containers that come over with flowers on board The halo = commemorate "famous" fan, St Francis of Assisi The football = JJB Sports

Trader Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 I worked with Rolly at Studio 63 when he won that competition. A true gentleman and so glad he's still around and enjoying his football!
RonManager Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 a) The tree - Kevin Keegan's perm b) The wavy lines - the famous 1973 ruler shortage c) The mayflower - the park (jumpers for goalposts - you know) d) The scarf - see (b) above e) The halo - colgate ring of confidence f) The football - pass (get it?)
sotonpride Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 My dad's got some old bits - he's got the original artwork he did (he maintains copyright over the artwork itself but not the design - although due to SFC incompetence he had to sign some paperwork when they changed the ball to ensure SFC retained copyright). He's also kept a few of the other designs he did at the time that he rejected. I've been meaning to scan it in for ages - will get round to it at some point. He hasn't got any of the newspaper stuff though. I emailed the Daily Echo a few years back asking for some info but never got a reply. Out of interest, as he was a graphic designer/artist by trade, he's been saying since the 80's that they should update the crest and said that when they updated the ball (which in his graphic mind doesn't work in the overall design) they should have redesigned it completely. He would have loved to have done it himself. Needless to say I disagree with him - I think the crest is great and an instantly recognisable symbol of SFC around the world.
DS Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 a) The Tree - A reminder of where not to stand in a thunderstorm b) The Waves - Commemorates 'Walking on Sunshine' by Katrina and the Waves which could often be heard being sung at The Dell in the mid 80's c) The Rose - the white rose of Yorkshire appears on the badge to acknowledge the close historical ties of Southampton and York. It is a little known fact that the Totton Flat Cap factories supplied Yorkshire with 94% of its headwear for the most of the 20th Century. d) The Scarf - To remind us all that it gets cold in the winter and we should wrap up warm. e) The Halo - If Saints lose we can always look at this on the badge and thik 'its ok, I can go home and play Halo on my X-Box to make me feel better'. f) The Football - Reminds the players which sport they are playing. There have been calls recently to make this more prominent as it seems clear that the players forgot for large parts of last season.
Trader Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 The current badge was designed by a local professional graphic designer I worked with at the time. It has undergone some slight modifications since but now looks EXTREMELY dated. Time for a rethink IMHO. I posted this last year I'm glad Rolly agrees with me
