dubai_phil Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Strachan to be DOF? Now this got some stick, but worth re-visiting with a bit more thought. DOF is a contentious title as we've seen, but looking more closely at the Board Room, we currently have Dave Jones Nicola Cortese Andrew Oldknow Now the board is the link between the management of the club and the ownership, and it has a darned big black hole in it in terms of experience and knowledge. So there could actually be a highly NON-contentious position of non-Exec Director or Technical Director - ie somebody to help TEACH the new guys at the top the ropes and to let AP get on with what he needs to do with the playing side. It could be done and could be part-time. Which may suit WGS for a year or two. Like everything else in life, the secret won't be in the job title it wil be in the job description, and I would bet my alimony on AP having been heavily involved in building the structures and description
scally Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 No, I think he is being serious. Add me to that Arizona, I laughed.
Junior Mullet Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Strachan to be DOF? He was there yesterday wasn't he. A few seats down from Markus and Cortesse.
revolution saint Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Strachan won't be DoF and wouldn't want it. He's already on the record as saying that the thing he enjoys the most is working with players and not the admin side of a managers job so why would he want a job that was almost entirely admin? I don't think it's fair on Pardew either. Whoever gets that role (and I'm not sure it's needed) should be mostly Pardew's choice, experienced, have good contacts and there to assist when needed. I'd have taken back WGS as manager but not in this role.
mattyd Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Was this on Solent? yes it was. Radio Solent reported Nicola's comments and Pardue on Sky said he had money

I follow your logic and the appointment of someone possibly WGS is plausible. My concern though is whether such an appointment would sit comfortably with AP.Would he not feel uneasy at having a high profile person sitting between him and the board ? As someone wrote on another thread a few weeks ago,the DOF role has worked well at Reading, because very few people have heard of Nicky Hammond .This has enabled their manager to manage without being inhibited by someone elses shadow. As good as WGS was for us until 2003 our future is, for the timebeing anyway, in AP's hands.
NickG Posted 9 August, 2009 Author Posted 9 August, 2009 unless Pardew was 100% behind it would rather no WGS involvement.
Panda Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 "My concern though is whether such an appointment would sit comfortably with AP.Would he not feel uneasy at having a high profile person sitting between him and the board ?" If you read Phil's post again he not suggesting someone between AP and the board but someone to advise the board on footballing issues - ie work with/train the board, a very different scenario than some DoF positions. AP may find it hard going trying to get his points across to the new ownership/management. Perhaps Gordon can do that for him? A translator from football in to business? Trouble is Marcus and Nicola would need a translator between Scottish and English too! That could lead to some complex conversations. Personally, I think he was just there to watch the match with no undercover agenda, just as Matt was there with Sky Sports and not for any other reason we might like to read in to it.

dubai_phil Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 The problem is that the minute there's a bit of a wobble from the team, there'll be the inevitable fan pressure for WGS to step in. AP could find himself undermined pretty quickly. That's an obvious & fair point and one that can easily be covered with PR and actions, a simple riposte is also - never saw any pressure for Wise to be brought back to the training ground at Newcastle  But there are a lot of functions, skill sets and knowledge that need to be rebuilt, which could be done as a "part time job", AP COULD do it, but which would take focus and time away from management of the First Team. Should AP sit on the Board and talk strategy or should he REPORT to the Board? If he reports then at this point in time I would argue that somebody should in the short term be teaching the Board about the intricacies and poitics of football! Somebody advising the board on football, rules, regs, politics, doing the smoozing with Fergie, Jose etc so we get their loans in. All COULD be done, clear description and statement of intent, WGS is in the press each week having fun in golf tournaments with MLT, and letting it be known he's takeing a break to solve his slice (oops he did that already) while learning Spanish and waiting for a chance at Real or Barca...
Verbal Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 All fine-sounding in theory, Phil. But it's all too often about power - the 'skill sets, functions and knowledge' are the buzz words used, in the end, to defend the indefensible. Too many times recently, the DoF has failed in British football precisely because no one could give a workable definition of what it meant, and who was answerable to whom. Hence, the numerous fallings out at Chelsea, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Newcastle, etc. The best counter-examples, obviously, are Fergie and Wenger. Can you imagine either being answerable to a DoF - or even having one in the boardroom 'mix' - and continuing in their posts another five minutes? Too many times, DoF in football here give the impression of not having nearly enough to do, and so often end up making mischief (again, Chelsea are textbook). Let AP stand or fall on rebuilding the team his way - not some compromise between him and WGS that leaves either open to blaming the other if it all goes pear-shaped.
andover pedro Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 if its someone to work with the board how about Laurie mac or Jimmy Case/Nick Holmes

The most disturbing thing about all this is that Pilchards got this just about right. Up to now Pilchards has had has a worse ITK prediction rate than even me. Good call Pilchards Morph
Bearsy Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 I wonder if WGS could be tempted by a Director of Youth Development type role?
crouchi Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Strachan wouldn't be able to function without disrupting the current set up. Keep the costs down and build the scouting network for Pardew, rather than recruiting'old boys'
Saint George Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 I wonder if WGS could be tempted by a Director of Youth Development type role? Good shout...and probably the most likely scenario to see WGS back at SMS. Add Director of Scouting to that as well.......AP has already said that area needs a lot of work and would probably be more than happy to see someone like WGS take over that role Would suite WGS down to the ground ....Less pressure, more time with his family and an involvement in the side of football he says he enjoys the most

We're scouting four players in Scotland.
Verbal Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 role as translator? You speak Scottish? Explains a lot.
hectors house Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 I wonder if WGS could be tempted by a Director of Youth Development type role? I agree - I would be very surprised if he came back to the club in any capacity that may step on the toes of AP (which IMO DOF would) but I reckon putting him in charge of the academy my be a good fit. I seem to recall reading somewhere that he wanted to get involved in that side of things but it may be my memory playing tricks.
Saints Pedro Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Don't we have any lipreaders on here? Strachan was clearly seen chatting to Cortese before the match on Sky .Looked a bit more than "where's my seat Nicola?"

Strachan was clearly seen chatting to Cortese before the match on Sky .Looked a bit more than "where's my seat Nicola?" ...and oddly, we're now being randomally linked with Scottish players. Still not 100% sure of him in a DoF role - i would just prefer pards to get on with it with Wilkins alongside him.
Snowballs2 Posted 9 August, 2009 Posted 9 August, 2009 Messi? Ronaldinho? Fabregas? There always has to be one stupid idiot like you! You think you are clever with such bilge?
St Marco Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Someone mentioned to me that MLT could potentially become involved. Pure speculation and maybe wishful thinking but he showed interest in the board room with the Pinnacle fake bid so who knows. The question is then what could he do? He would probably be just a token board member or something. What worries me is that if things go wrong some of our brainless fans will take pops at him like they did Lawrie Mac. So probably best to have no previous Southampton personnel in there for their own sake!
Toadhall Saint Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Wasn't ****ing lying was he? Never thought he would for a moment.
Gorgiesaint Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Wasn't ****ing lying was he? and he did say signings. So wonder who's next??
Wes Tender Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Nicola Cortese..... a man of his word. That's a novelty around these parts.

Chez Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 MLT will not be involved. He is going back to Sky. Spoke to him on Wednesday. lets hope we can put a bloody big smile back on his face each saturday with a few wins especially against Hartlepool.
alpine_saint Posted 10 August, 2009 Posted 10 August, 2009 Blimey, we have a CEO for once who is a man of his word and not a lying toerag... Things have really changed at SMS.
