I think you're looking at the wrong division, professor. Last season S****horpe got to the playoffs on 76 points and Peterborough got the second spot on 89 points so allowing for the -10 we would have needed to get 86 points, quite achievable. We would have needed to be slightly better than Leicester to have been automatically promoted with -10.

74 points with good goal difference would have reached play offs last season.

Remember if we get 74 points - we actually would have won 84 points so are likely to have decent goal difference.

Leeds, Leicester, MK Dons and Peterborough all got that amount last year.

Infact Millwall, who we matched yesterday, got 82 - and we haven't had a real preseason or built our side.

If we get decent side play offs is very achievable.

James not given an option? I thought he looked very good today. Not a wide man (with Lallana on the left we had virtually no width at all) but he beat his man a fair few times and his crossing was superb.

Him, Schneiderlin and Lallana all look much better for last seasons experience.

Really glad for Paterson, I had a bet with someone that he would score over 15 goals this season so it's good to see he's starting early.

Schneiderlin faded mainly because of match fitness, he didn't play much last season because of injury so it's going to take him a while to get match fit. As fot the nerves issue, I'm not sure it was a case of nerves, we still looked pretty solid apart from set pieces. If the team has been nervous, we'd have lost it 2-1 or 3-1, again i think it was a case of fitness. plus the millwall subs gave them freshness and the subs we made weren't exactly match-changing

Spot on.

I think there were more nerves in the crowd/in front of the telly than there were on the pitch - because we're all so used to the last twenty minutes collapse. I thought we looked pretty solid too, but Millwall were pressing hard because we were running out of puff, and because we didn't have enough strength in depth on the bench. Pardew and Dean Wilkins should sort out both those concerns, given a bit of time.

I noticed that we had young mr Pulis on the bench yesterday, which surprised me somewhat. I have never had the pleasure, or otherwise, to see him play, but was under the impression that there were good footballing reasons for why he only had played some 25 first team games at the age of 25.

Has AP spotted potential, or with so many named subs can he safely pretend that AP2 is in sniffing distance of the first team, in the hope that somebody will take him off our hands?

Shocked that Harding is leading the votes at the moment.

Found he had a good game and looked brilliant when defending but seemed to just "hoof" the ball forward when in possession, not once did he play a pass to feet. I know the long ball game is definitely one to use in this division but a lot of his balls were overhit or to no one.

I'm not saying he didn't have a great game, just not a M.O.T.M performance IMHO.

I agree and Murty in my view did far better. He also made a couple of powerful covering runs into our box to make needed saving tackles. His work rate has improved as his fitness gets better and his interplay with the midfield was good as well. For me he was the best player on the pitch and if he can last two or three seasons will become one of our best loved players. Loved his excitement and celebrations after we scored.

I found it amusing their was no photo of him with a Saints shirt on but one with a striped jumper on shows how rarely he has wore the shirt.

As I invariably do I predicted a Saints win but a draw was no suprise at all given the upheaval we have been through. I thought a draw was a fair result even if it was a rather dubious penalty and then corner that led to their goal. That's how it goes sometimes and though I was annoyed at the time realistically refs and linesmen can only give it as they see it and on the whole I thought the ref did a good job in lettting the game flow. Clearly we need a few new players but I'd rather sign some players who will definitely improve the squad than a few players signed in a rush who might not. For me it is just nice to have a team to support with an excellent owner, director and manager and of course a very good stadium. We will definitely improve, of that I'm sure and not only with a few good signings ( as AP said we need striking options) but with an increased level of fitness. I am in NO doubt Pardew will address these issues sooner rather than later and whilst I still believe promotion these season will be very tough something tells me that we'll not be far away and certainly a million times better off come the end of this season than we were the end of last season. Maybe it's an advantage having supported the Saints over a period of 40+ years as it tends to make patience a virtue you have in abundance !!

Whilst I agree with pretty well everything you say here, for me it was the attack that was really the problem. Saga was uninterested and Matt Paterson, although he played well today (and scored) he is a bit lightweight physically. We need someone who can get stuck in and cause havoc and panic in the opposition box. Sadly at the moment we don`t have that.

I agree with you mate.....can't help bu feel that a Stern John style of player would cause havoc in this division and we should've done more to keep him....on another note, why wasn't Rasiak in the squad yesterday, anyone know??

I thought the same - if he's in the squad then get him in a saints shirt and take a photo - how difficult is it to do this?? Posting his picture in a polo shirt just sends all the wrong messages about the man.

I couldnt get to the game yesterday, As I was in Glasgow. Watched the game in the Europa by George Square. A good game to watch even if the last 15 minutes became a bit nervy. I thought I would be the only one there watching it especially a I had to ask the landlord to put the game on for me. However it wasnt long before most of the sky tv's were showing the game as several other people came in and watched the game as well.

I spent 15 years in Scotland spreading the Saints gospel. It may seem on the face of it that folk up there support teams like Celtic, Rangers etc etc. But lift the corner of their replica shirts, and you will see that underneath, they all wear the red and white stripes of Southampton FC, their unspoken, but true, love.

Once I had converted the last few, I slipped quietly back south on the 10.31 from Glasgow Central, my work was done.

Pleased with result.

Two positives - SKY curse lifted & Paterson scoring.

From reports received from friends the whole experience was 100% better than anything in recent years. Not difficult some of you might say.

Other things to note for all you luvvies out there...

20,000+ fans with it being on SKY and no reduced ticket prices - last season we would have been lucky to scrape 15,000.

11,000 season tickets sold to date...so Lowe had no affect on season ticket sales last season?

It's fantastic getting our club back...but one downer is the Itchen Corner still being closed. Having followed Saints for many years you find a spiritual home in a stadium. At The Dell it moved around until a few of us settled under the East Stand. I've sat in all parts of SMS - The Chapel, Kingsland and Northam - but Blocks 1/2&3 were the place I felt most at home.

I can't put my finger on it...but it had an edge. No it wasn't the police presence or the extra stewards...but there seemed to be a group of like minded persons of a certain age. Old enough to know better, but what the heck! Sure banter with the away fans was part of the day out...but that losing feeling tends to get some peoples backs up!

If we start winning...surely the tensions of the fans crossing in the car park will be eliviated. Most of the "blokes" that sat in these blocks didn't go out of SMS spoiling for a fight - so why close it?

How much extra does the policing cost in real terms? I bet there were just as many police there for Saturdays game with no corner open - so why? The team need the fans like a 12th man - The Itchen Corner encouraged a more vocal backing...along with some more original songs!

Come on own up, who are the 6 jokers who voted for Saga? Very funny.

He looked League 2 on Saturday and if Swansea want to offer £1m for him, i'd drive him there myself.

I have to agree, if the million quid was going to be made available to Pardew/Cortese straight away i'd happily sell him.

Then who was IYO of course?

I would say it was between either Murty or Spiderman.

Morgan looked a changed man compared to his "lazy" performances last season, every attacking move that we had seemed to go through him and his effort level was fantastic.

Murty was just as good as Harding when defending but managed to play passes to feet, allowing us to build attacking moves from the back.

I was dissapointed with Gillet when he came on, last season he was brilliant until he got injured. A real bulldog in the midfield, chasing absolutely everything. He looked a bit clumsy however on Saturday and had quite a few misplaced passes with the ball getting trapped under his feet. I'm sure that was just down to a lack of match practice though and hopefully we will see the Gillet we came to love towards the end of last season.

It may have been the massive pressure the boy is now under, being sponsored by this website. So if he has a bad game, it's our fault!! :D

During half-time, when I could drag my eyes off the mascot racing  I remembered that we were allowed 7 subs on the bench this season and we had 5 on the pitch with a ball, losing it to the sprinkler system.

So who were missing. My guess was Pulis and Holmes, as they must have been in the treatment room after the occasional jog along the Itchen touchline, or perhaps they were modelling stripey jumpers. :)
