Our Position Or Pompey's?

True, but he doesn't appear to want to spend any of it. We need a Markus Liebherr with the money burning a hole in his pocket :D

only £1m today.

You - anyone who tranmere released as not good enough?

or persuaded more players to come out of retirement other than Neimi, Finnan and Viduka?

"Relax, we'll be fine"

Not a 100% sure about that my Blue friend. Pompey won't go out of business but these money problems have been going on for years and have never really been resolved.

In reality the situation with both teams is probably about the same. Similar size cities with similar size crowds and fan base. Marcus bought Saints for 13 million and that got him a modern stadium in good nick, state of the art training academy, building land, hospitatlity/conference set up, League membership desperate as it was, and most importantly of all no debt and sole ownership. All he needed to do is buy a team which in Div 1 is probably 5- 6 million maximum and fund higher wages to enable the club to climb out of this position. Not a bad investment really just a bit oif a long term one.

Pompey have the highly prized Premiership status and that is worth millions but they are firmly positioned in the Premiership relegation league which will be perm three from any one of Pompey, Burnley, Stoke, Hull, Wolves, Bolton, Blackburn, and possibly Wigan. They have a debt that seems to vary every week but probably around 60 million.

The stadium needs rebuilding and that's an eye watering 100 million before you start thinking about it. That can only be funded by a hotel/casino/shopping development and Portsmouth Council will not allow that as it will hit Gunwarth their own Golden Goose. Even with the transfer of some players the wage bill will eat up the money from Sky and 19K crowds.

There aren't any players to sell as Pompey have had a policy of not paying money up front for years so when a player is sold precious little money comes through to the club unless they are home grown. Good young players are coming through but it takes years to see a return on that investment.

For an investor who wants a Premiership football club he needs to wave goodbye to 200 million before seeing a return and hoping that the team can survive in the Premiership. If I had that sort of money a team like Forest or Sheffield Wed/Utd would be more attractive.

Fratton Park is Pompey's secret weapon in the same way the Dell was for Saints and once they lose that with a ground half full of plastic fans survival will become even more difficult. If you doubt that just ask any Saints / Arsenal / Man City fan.

The problem is that the difference between the lower teams and the upper elite is growing and the number of teams where possible points can be taken is shrinking. Unfortunately you have to add City to the top four now which means that's ten games where the best any team can hope for is a couple of points possibly a rare win. Next you have Villa, Spurs, Everton, and probably Brum, West ham, Fulham, Sunderland where points will be hard to come by.

Look coldly at those facts and it looks bleak for Pompey but as you say beat Fulham on Saturday and everything will look a little brighter.

Personally I want Pompey to stay in the Premiership and Saints to join them as quickly as possible. Obviously then Pompey should lose and frequently be relegated as that is the natural order of things :)

However Fratton Park should be preserved as a national heritage site. Dump it may be but I have some treasured memories from there and some terrible ones as well. It stands as one of the last reminders of when teams played football on equal terms. A dark, cold intimidating environment and the only thing you could buy at half time was a bovril and a wagon wheel.... if you were lucky.

I would suggest that Saints fans haven't exactly got a lot to crow about at the moment. Our hearts may be full of hope but the facts show Saints are cast adrift at the bottom of Division 3. Might be best to sdave it for a few weeks.

Don't you love football six weeks ago Pompey were Billionaires and Saints were ...... finished. I wonder what things will look like in six weeks.

Nice post Macca - tend to agree with most of it. I want Pompey to stay up as well, but in order to do that I think that they need to have a good start, a bit a la Hull City last season.

Problem is though, if they don't get off to a flyer I think that confidence will go and heads will drop and it will be too easy for some to just blame it on the circumstances of the past few months.

They really do have thier backs against the wall now - it's up to the players that are left to dig them out, adopt a seige mentality and show some real bottle. Whether that happens remains to be seen.

Personally I think that the good Dr needs to get his act togeather - either buy them now or butt out. As your post points out, they do not look a good investment, even at a nominal £1.00 fee - but the Dr is effectively doing a 'Pinnacle' on them by dragging this takeover out. If he gets cold feet now PFC are going to find it very difficult to find a buyer in the present climate - as you so rightly point out, other clubs are a far more attractive proposition. 200 million to sort PFC our, or go north and knock off the Geordies at around 70 million - I know where I'd go.

I feel for the Blue Few - I hope they get things sorted - but right now it looks pretty bleak.

I'm touched by the enduring fascination with all things Pompey on this board. Over 200 replies on this thread. One person is even praying daily for the ground to fall to bits and us to get relegated. He seems not to realise that the first part of his prayer has already been answered. As for the second part if you keep looking up at us you are all going to get very stiff necks. I think you should be content for us to stay in the prem until you manage to return, then we can have one of those interesting April matches like we did last time-Whoever loses gets relegated. Now that would be interesting.

Presumably he wants a return on his investment..

Just like we are touched that a skate is sad enough to spend so much time on a Southampton forum, Closet.. Personaly I dont want any club to go bust, but, i won't lose any sleep if you do, it's funny how the skates in my office have gone all but silent in the last month, how things change.

Pompey's curse was to get Harry the chequebook. The club (and all others) will always suffer after he leaves because the endless bungs stop super fast. Hence mass exodus of Fratton Park. Notice how he is now taking control of all transfers at Spurs? NOtice how he keeps going to the same agents, i mean players? Is there a limit to the ten per cents he can make on one player following him around like a lapdog? It all adds up to enormous popularity (from the fawning press guys too), plus a flashy home on Sandbanks. Shame the England manager can't just buy teams, as he would have been perfect. Mind you, appointing Paul Hart was about the stupidest thing to have done in my view. Hardly sets the pulse racing, does it. I'd say this is the year that the yawning gap between the two clubs starts to shrink dramatically, -10 or no -10...

The difference is that we will still have the bright shiny stadium and the training ground and the facilities of a decent Premiership club. Also by that time, quite a few plastics from the area will have deserted the Skates and returned to us, so even if Leibherr does sell, it will be as a properly functioning, well run Premiership club.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT .....

This time last year ...

Our Ex Chairman had ditched Pearson, which, IMHO, started the landslide towards Administration

That, in turn has led us to being taken over by Markus Leibherr, with NO debts, and things are on the UP

How ironic then, to think what would have happened IF we had had Pearson in charge last season ???

IMHO, he would have steered us to Mid Table, Gates would have been bigger, and we would NOT have gone into Admin .......... and LOWE WOULD STILL BE THERE

So, after all my Rants about Lowe, I have to eat humble pie .... THANK YOU Rupert for NOT keeping Pearson .......... It has led us to having our Club back, free of debt ...... and, of course, free of YOU

Although one or two chose to deny it, most on here last season knew damned well that we'd end up in administration. The numbers just didn't add up and we had beyond useless team and board management.

By the same token, it's blindingly obvious that you will (a) lose more of your better players before the end of August; (b) lose your dodgy property developer buyer; © miss your payment deadline to Standard Chartered; © get relegated with possibly a record low number of points; and (d) go into administration.

(d) may happen before © because someone at the club may see sense and take the points deduction before the end of the season.

Either way, though, all of the above WILL happen. Trying to find comfort by comparing yourselves to Brum, Wolves, Stoke or Hull misses one very important point. All of those clubs are united in their desire to survive. Morale at your club is in the gutter.

Are you sure your'e not getting confused between what you WANT to happen and what you THINK will happen.

Not at all. It was all more in the way of a fool-proof (although clearly not P*mpey fan-proof) prediction.

The only thing I confused was my 'c's.

Of course, one never sees little kids of three with Skate shirts on, because most of them are in care, so rarely seen outside of the care homes.

Clearly there's a problem in that department. The Guardian today quotes an education spokeman as saying that the schools near his home in Portsmouth are 'offensive'.

Fly BE which is both of you isn't it? I looked at the badge and I'm pretty sure it was southampton. So that leaves you 1-0 up at the moment. Have to admit I'd rather see one of your shirts than yet another big four one. Exeter should be a tough match.

don't worry about it yet, it another two years before you have to play them, but you are right - it will be tough for you.

Saints will be in mid-table obscurity in the Premiership in 5 years barring an unforeseen disaster or some sort of rule change and League realignment.

Pompey, probably won't.

So the question therefore becomes:

40 years of superiority including a Cup win, other Wmebley finals, European football and a great infrastructure followed by a 5-10 year blip

OR

To quote a rather profligate mutual ex-manager, "40 years of dross" followed by a Cup win and long-term ruin?

Hmm... let me think

Have they named that Bell in the Cathedral after him yet?? Perhaps they`ll name it after "Doctor" Who? when he saves the club.

Good post and a fair assessment without the purile abuse that us PFC followers often get on here. I know, I know it IS your board I suppose...

One scenario that could save us short term if the Fahim takeover goes tits up is the one where someone wants a Premiership club on the cheap to do up in their own image.

In many ways Pompey is a blank canvas (cue 'That's not all that's blank about Pompey hur! hur! jokes), that needs a hell of a lot of investment, but is at least already in the top flight.

Whilst this could also attract the chancer who just wants to suck the Sky money out of it and sell off the shell when it all goes wrong, there's still just as much chance of someone coming in who's happy to take on a project.

As it stands whatever happens in the next few weeks and months I'll be happy to take 17th place at the end of the season :(
