St Landrew Posted 9 August, 2009 Share Posted 9 August, 2009 I didn't really get John Hughes' films. I found The Breakfast Club ultra pretentious twaddle, but then it wasn't really aimed at me. I found myself wishing that they wouldn't make films like Home Alone, and Uncle Buck, but save the money and make something really significant. But that's not the Hollywood way, because they'd only screw that up too, by trying too hard. But I digress. Planes, Trains and Automobiles does stand out, not because the film is particularly good, but because of the chemistry between Steve Martin and John Candy works really well. Middle America films from the 80's, especially John Hughes films, had something about them I didn't like. A shallowness, an arrogance, or expectation about them, that was fostered from being middle class and comfortable. Perhaps they were just too contemporary American for my taste. I hardly ever connected. RIP, all the same though.
