the saint in winchester Posted 5 August, 2009 Share Posted 5 August, 2009 .... for a specific period of time before a game ... a reference to the Ferguson/goalie episode. Not that they are asked to be tee-total during their whole career. :-)

Actually, the way that Saints were performing, he was probably drinking during the games!
Gordon Mockles Posted 5 August, 2009 Share Posted 5 August, 2009 Just heard on the radio that George Burley has banned the Scotland team from drinking alcohol! Irony of ironies! Only cos the players were probably stealing from his secret Glenmorangie stash in the boot polish cupboard!

OldNick Posted 5 August, 2009 Share Posted 5 August, 2009 the stories were unfounded, just a stick used to try and undermine him. He has been in the Scots job for over a year, do you not think they would not have had the press trying to dig stories up about that? It was a disgusting slur on his character. He has left but the methods used to try and get him to leave were distasteful. ps I do know he does like a drink, just like the majority of fans on here do. He has gone and chose to abandon us, he s no better than any other manager who has done the same to us in the past.

Yes he liked a drink but it was chinese whispers. Agreed, nobody ever posted real evidence. I suppose most managers like a drink or ten. I know of a championship manager that likes to get wasted in a wine bar in Leamington Spa once a week. I cannot provide evidence of this so people can choose whether to believe or not. He was average at best for us, why invent an excuse for his inability to spend wisely and be a good manager? He said he was aiming for the playoffs which we achieved. The new owners (Wilde and Crouch) excepted this so maybe the new owners were at fault as well and should have looked at someone with a more positive outlook. sadoldgit Posted 7 August, 2009 Share Posted 7 August, 2009 Nick To you the stories were unfounded to others they were not Alan Brazil, who knows Burley better than anyone on here, says he is "not a boozer". Anyone can spout third hand rubbish and soon it becomes fact. Nick is right. Like him or not, he still has a better record than Lawrie Mac and Ted Bates and Gordon Strachan. The way he was treated by a section of fans is shameful. Still, if Pardew does not get us promoted in his first two seasons, expect more of the same. He was average at best for us, why invent an excuse for his inability to spend wisely and be a good manager? He said our aim was the play offs and he acheived that. But for a couple of moments of madness by players - not Burley - we would have made the final in his only fulkl season with us. We won lots of matches at home and away under Burley. Chelsea have spent a great deal more and are still not Eurpoean champions, spending does not guarantee results. We were in no danger of going down under Burley. 1.54 points per game, more than any other manager we had, but hey, lets slag him off anyway. Well that was a close call sneeking into the play-offs, perhaps his tactics, playing players out of position, not getting a CB was all part of the plan to do just enough, whereas other teams used their resources more wisely. I don't get the connection with Chelsea, they were champions of the Premier League, their investment paid off in that respect and their risk wasn't as big. If we were in danger of relegation after £7m worth of acquasitions then that would be a worry, besides the money had other far reaching consequences. Thedelldays Posted 8 August, 2009 Share Posted 8 August, 2009 burley was a crap manager for us who somehow got his countries job... if a player went through the montions like he did towards the end he would get dogs abuse.. also, I have connections to an ex director at SMS through the family and can say that the topic for discussion on this thread about burleys habbits and the dropping of rasiak are connected..
