Saintandy666 Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lhc#Construction_accidents_and_delays First time next wednesday, while the proper business starts 21st of october. The accelerator will be switched on pretty soon, and they hope to recreate the conditions at the start of the big bang and then we can 'unlock the secrets of the universe'. However, in the process of this thousands of little black holes will be created. Now according to a theory, they should fizzle up before they get to any size but there is a small chance they could expand and swallow us all up. Sounds pretty dogey to me, how they can play russian roulette with the planet. But I guess it should technically be alright. So what do you think... good research or unessesary risk?
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 And you can watch it live on TV, too. If you've got access to Eutelsat, that is. http://lhc-first-beam.web.cern.ch/lhc-first-beam/satellite.html
Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Ah feck, i'll be at work. I won't even know if we die.
Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 On a serious note, is there HONESTLY a chance these black holes could expand?
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 On a serious note, is there HONESTLY a chance these black holes could expand? The best brains in the world, including Stephen Hawking, reckon not. So cross your fingers...
Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 The best brains in the world, including Stephen Hawking, reckon not. So cross your fingers... He's probably already got his invincible ship ready with all the cloning equipment on board ready for his super clone race.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 If it goes belly up they'll not even get a chance to tell us. And we'd only find out a few seconds later, although we'll not realise it! 'Don't panic Mr. Mainwaring!'
saint_stevo Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Cool its my birthday October 20th, so i may as well drink petrol or summit, good times
Gemmel Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Cool its my birthday October 20th, so i may as well drink petrol or summit, good times Cheaper to drink a fine wine
saint_stevo Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Cheaper to drink a fine wine than scifer it out of a car?

Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 The day before 9/11. The universe has strange ideas about fate....
Saintandy666 Posted 4 September, 2008 Author Posted 4 September, 2008 The day before 9/11. The universe has strange ideas about fate.... Well, let's just hope we can trust Stephen Hawking, because it's his theory that these black holes will disintegrate. Our lives are in his hands.
Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Well, let's just hope we can trust Stephen Hawking, because it's his theory that these black holes will disintegrate. Our lives are in his hands. This leaves things open for soooo many jokes....
RedArmy Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Wouldn't it be ironic if the world ended whilst trying to understand how it started.
Sheaf Saint Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 With all due respect to Stephen Hawking - how the fvck does he know what will happen when they switch this thing on. Has he ever created black holes before? I think not. Seems to me there are too many unknown unknowns in this situation. It's all very well trying to understand how the world was created, but it will all be pointless if they end up destroying it in the process.

No-one has the slightest idea what will happen.
Deppo Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Wouldn't it be ironic if the world ended whilst trying to understand how it started. Yeah, cosmic...
saint lard Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 On a serious note, is there HONESTLY a chance these black holes could expand? Well,i knew a girl once who coul........oh sorry, wrong hole.....again.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 4 September, 2008 Posted 4 September, 2008 Manchester City fans will be gutted.
St Landrew Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 [/b] Well,i knew a girl once who coul........oh sorry, wrong hole.....again. If this was TMS I'd be saying Rule 1. But as it's not I'll say, leave that sort of comment for TMS. Eh..? But back to the topic: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dccnr/

If there weren't such progressive thinkers and enquiring minds in the world we'd still be living in caves and worshipping the lightning God or whatever. Look at it this way; if the world does disappear, we had a good innings.
PES Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 Manchester City fans will be gutted. LOL! Brilliant!

Flyer Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 The best brains in the world, including Stephen Hawking, reckon not. So cross your fingers... The best brains in the world know that is the right answer to say, after all, if you are wrong, there will be nobody left to point out your mistake.
CabbageFace Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 Two things will happen 1) It will be delayed and delayed until the world ends some other way 2)It wont work or prove anything other than it was a waste of money and there are far more important things for scientist to be blowing millions and millions on.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 The best brains in the world know that is the right answer to say, after all, if you are wrong, there will be nobody left to point out your mistake. At least we won't know anything about it if it happens.
dubai_phil Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 Some people think it will launch an era of time travel. Better get someone over there so he can go back and stop the reverse takeover. I'm happy that you lot are MUCH closer to it. You'll just get vapourised instantly. As for us down here we'll simply be instantly vapourised
Saint_clark Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 If I win the euromillions tonight and the world ends vaporizing all my money, do you think this laboratory will compensate me?
James_O_Mac Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 I read an article on this in the times or something thereof not so long ago...did u know one of the inventors was the keyboardist for d-ream - the ones who sang 'things can only get better' - i am not even joking. IRONY!
Master Bates Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 Other scientists are trying to close the experiment down. There's a court hearing this week. Apparently, they have conclusive evidence, that it may very well turn out disastrous.

Um Bongo Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 To be honest, even if it goes tits up, we ain't gonna know about it. One minute we'll be here, the next *poof* gone. And would we all die? I dont know how black holes work. Where would we go?

And would we all die? I don't know how black holes work. Where would we go? Ah, well, there you go. Lots of theories of course but no real answers. Maybe a black hole is a connection between two points in the universe or even an inter dimensional rift. If we're lucky, it could even be the gateway to hell.
CabbageFace Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 If we're lucky, it could even be the gateway to hell.
equalizer Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 Lets stay on topic! We're talking black holes, not s**tholes!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Get them to switch it off, no way we could cope with hell - having to be a sk*te season ticket holder
Weston Super Saint Posted 5 September, 2008 Posted 5 September, 2008 Ok, I think the full blast may be happening 10th september... so unlucky birthday man. B0llocks, the day after the takeover.
