yorkiesaint Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 I guess so, so the question is, is Liebherr going to take an interest in the way the club is run in the same way Abramovich does? The difference is that Kenyon didn't decide to buy chelsea, abramovich did, and then he found someone to run it for him. in this case it is the reverse.
Frank's cousin Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 The other point that slightly worries me is that NC convinced ML to buy the club. Now that doesnt soud like someone who bought the club for the Kudos of having a succesful footy club to watch. If NC convinced ML to buy the club then does this mean the reason he bought it was because they feel there could be a good ROI Of course! But dont be frightened by ROI. They will be well aware that to get a good ROI, we need to be top half premiership and secure financially when the club would probably be worth about 100 mil - ROI for ML and NC means success for SFC. The key to that success will be wise investment as necessary and a focus on the footballing needs built upon solid foundations...I know its unfashionable to say it, but despite what Lowe eventually did, he had that same mantra, build on foundations - he got the stadium and academy and 'living within ones means' bit right, but floundered when it came to building on that with a appropriate footballing focus and alienating the fans. I hope we give ML and NC the time and support because it wont be an overnight thing... 5 years to prem would be a good 'fan ROI' as far Im concerned.
Gingeletiss Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 Don't get me wrong, I'm generally pleased (so far) with developments at the club. yet it's important to get clear who is doing what, and not get carried away with some kind of euphoric badnwagon (after all, we have been there before!). People are saying that Leibherr has appointed Cortese and that it's a good move. It seems to me more resonable that Cortese and Oldknow decided to buy the club, Cortese said 'i know a friend who'll give us the money' and he duly did. Cortese has been running the club since the buyout but it's only announced today. It was convenient for them to let fans think a billionaire was going to come in, in order to sell season tickets, drum up media interest etc. Is Liebherr even on the board? It's all just a bit of subtle and clever manipulation which leaves a sour tinge in my mouth.. What a totally stupid post..................'Hi mate, I know you barely know me, but give us £20 million, I want to buy a football club'. 'No prob Nick, don't worry about paying it back!!' Get real!!!!!

'No prob Nick, don't worry about paying it back!!' Get real!!!!! Of course he knew him before, that info is on the OS. Why is it stupid to suggest that Cortese is the main man and that Liebherr is an investor, like the tax payer and northern rock?

You're suggesting Cortese is De Facto owner of the club having borrowed Markus Leibheer's money to buy it ? - interesting hypothesis but a more simple explanation (Ockham's Razor) is that the ownership arrangements are as stated - NC running the club on ML's behalf . Gingeletiss Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 H e knew him.......that's a matter of record.........but did he know him well enough to lob him that much dosh..............um!!!! I said stupid.......because it's also a matter of record, that ML is the new owner.
Thedelldays Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 I'm amazed that anyone can say if this is good or bad yet
Frank's cousin Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 I'm amazed that anyone can say if this is good or bad yet Of course we cant, but we CAN at least be positive and hopeful. As many have previously said, they feel uncomfortable with football and business.... BUT it was not just Lowe who wanted this, but its a fact of the modern era that the two are intrinsically linked, if we want to be playing in the top flight again... we only ahve to look at teh mess Newcastle are in because of a fan running the club with fan emotions no longer being a viable option in the commercial reality of teh modern game... we just need to hope that those who run the 'business' understand enough about it to realise that commercial success can only be possible by getting the footballing principles right first and foremost. Something tells me that given ML has built up a 2.5 mil business empire and places alot of trust in NC, what they dont know now, they will either learn or bring in appropriate advice. They are bound to make a few mistakes along the way, and our job right now is to to support them through the good and bad... IMHO
Snowballs2 Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 There's nowt as queer as folk, here we were wishing for someone to save us a few months ago, and now we have one some on here are not satisfied and want a shed load of spending. Let us be realstic, we are going to be in a frugal situation for a few years, butv we are safe, we need to give the owners time and support. Sadly I shall not be here to see the end results but I can honestly say I am hAPPIER NOW THAN FOR A LONG TIME. iTS jAM TOMORROW NOT TODAY, WE NEED TO RESTABLISH OURSELVES FIRST. sORRY ABOUT THE LARGE TYPE MY BRAIN TUMOUR NOT SO GOOD TODAY AND i DO NOT PROPOSE TO RETYPE
saint lard Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 (edited) Lets give this regime a bloody chance before we start questioning the "whys" "whens" and "what fors" please. This appointment,on the surface, looks a pretty damn good move at this present moment, until i am given a proven reason to start to question decisions made by the people who are now intrusted to run SFC i am bloody happy with what we have, compared to only about 6 weeks ago when we had diddly squat to be very positive about. rebuilding a club from top to bottom will take time, but it is happening, and i think we are lucky to have onboard the people we have. Couple of signings and who knows what may lie ahead, another rollercoaster ride i'm sure but a damnsite more pleasurable than the one we had to endure under the last regime.....and right up to July 8th,the moment that Markus Liebherr and colleagues stepped in too stop us from going out of existence All imo. Just look at what Sunderland have forked out just to bumble along the bottom. Look how much ManC forked out just to be near mid table! Anyone who thinks this is for profit needs their bumps felt. If it was for profit we would be seeing tarmac where all the current facilities now are. With the demise of Setanta this could well reflect on the cash cow that is the Premier and a lot of clubs finding the piper at the door with his hand out. Football clubs are like super yachts which do about 10 feet to the gallon, a plaything of the rich alone unless you are only going to be there for the day. Going back to the original point I don't believe anyone should be worried. The alternatives are something that you should really worry about. It is very interesting that Cortese is the actual driving force and that their relationship is closer to father and son than business adviser. It seems obvious that many different possibilities have been looked at for getting satisfaction from his huge resources, as previous sporting ventures have been mooted. Cortese has talked him into it and all Liebherr wanted to know is that he would sort out the day to day running of the club. Liebherr has bought into the idea now and even if Cortese were to leave, I still believe he would continue unless something dramatic occurred. I just do not see Liebherr as your quick fix merchant, more the sort to plant the seed and nurture it to fruition. It would not not surprise me if the academy again found itself to the fore of the clubs future. I do not know what the main points of attraction were with Saints, but I cannot see the Premier being far away from guiding those thoughts.
Stanley Saint Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 I thought 'Raging Bull' and 'Taxi Driver' were both excellent films, so I'm glad he's come on board.
dubai_phil Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 Good appointment, wise decision by Markus to place someone he trusts in the seat of power. Those who quipped about his banker predecessor have failed to note one critical difference, these guys listen to people and THINK before acting. yeah makes it slower for some, but I posted on the day of the takeover, the Swiss are about slow steady efficient growth, not creative risk taking. They will succeed, after all, ABB, Lindt, Liebherr, Rolex et al weren't built in 4 weeks chill gang, we're in a marathon not another stupid egg and spoon race

Larrylove Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 As I remember NC gave the first interview in the echo the day after the takeover,it was said then that he would run the club on an interim basis until such times as a full board etc were finalised. So why the surprise that he has been running the club with AO? Seems like a high level buisiness appointment for me,all first class no second division execs for us,hope this sets the tone for the future, premier league all the way!!

thorpie the sinner Posted 4 August, 2009 Posted 4 August, 2009 Cortese comes across like the real deal, very impressed so far!! last few years we were a laughing stock, the foundations are being set for a well run football club and a bright new future!
