Lee Trundle...

Dibden Purlieu Saint

Well he's not exactly a bag of pace or a physical target man, but he does have a good touch and adds a bit of creativity and trickery to the team - and he's not afraid to have a go from distance either, something we've been lacking for far too long has been a striker who's willing to friggin whack it

How I started watching Saints.

I came down here over 10 years ago, but I support a perrenially crap team who have had the occasional moment of success. Watching (even occassionally) a premiership team when yours is languishing in League 2 never really appealled to me.

Anyhow . . . . come the 2005/6 season I thought "I know. I'll go watch Saints stuff Cardiff". I duly noted the appropriate date when the fixtures were released.

That season Swansea made it to the Johnstone Paint Final at Millenium Stadium, Cardiff. That game was on the Sunday. The Saints/Cardiff game was on the Saturday.

I thought "Sod it. I've been waiting for the Cardiff game ALL SEASON. I'm going. I can't afford to do both. Never mind. Swans will make the play-offs anyway."

The Saturday came. I went down to St Marys for my first ever game. Database only. I'd never been before. :-( **** **** ****. I even tried to sneak into the away end. No chance. So I did not get to see the Saints v Cardiff game . . . . . and I did not get to see Swansea win the JP trophy v Carlisle when Mr Trundle scored

.

Bugger!!

I was right about Swans getting into the League 1 play-offs that year, so I did get my trip to the Millenium stadium. We lost to Barnsley. ****

The following year I got myself onto the Saints database early in a league cup game . . . . and the rest as they say . . . . .

Is Trundle any good now? God only knows.

He was never fast, couldn't head the ball, and always seemed to be injured over Xmas (!???), but he scored plenty, made as many assists, and the kids loved him.

I wasn't too sad to see him leave Swansea though. We had become Trundle United, and this is a team game. I don't think Gary Johnson knew how to use Trundle. He is left footed (incredibly left footed!!!) but he is not a left winger/midfielder - he simply doesn't have the pace for it. Stick him in the middle as one of two strikers, with a foil to play off, and maybe, just maybe HCDAJFU.

Interesting observation. I think he could be superb alongside Rakiak - those two would have us scoring left, right and centre IMO.

Hmm, not sure about that, that really would give us no pace/movement at all up front, allowing the opposition to push their back line as far forward as they liked.

This is what happens when Saga and Rasiak play together - because they haven't got the pace and the opposition defenders can defend so high up they often end up having to beat their players twice and lose the ball. When Rasiak or Saga played with Jones or BWP they managed to find space between the back four and midfield thanks to the threat of a pacy striker running through which forced the defenders back. Trundle and Rasiak may both be good players - but if they wind up recieving the ball when they're still 40 yards from goal we'll seriously struggle going forward

Looks like he's available on loan if he can be sensible about wages.

News from Bristol

Trundle told he can leave Bristol City

Reader comments seem to confirm complete lack of pace. But then he never had it at Swansea either.

I think he's on 10K at BC. Was 5K at Swansea.

Can somebody please get on the phone to Alan Pardew and let him know he is available, tell him the fans would love it.

Not necessarily true, if we have the right midfielders. Essentially, with strikers like that, the key is to have pacy wide men running into space down the flanks (Lee Holmes, for example), and/or a central midfielder running past the striker holding up the ball into the space beyond, in the manner of a Gerrard or Lampard -- something that Lallana (though obviously not as good as those two) should be capable of. You need pace in the side, certainly, and it's good to have a pacy striker, but you can do the job with quick midfielders too, if they understand their roles and fulfill them.

But lets be honest - do we even have pacy midfielders? Pardew seems to favour two holding midfielders in the centre (two out of Gillett/Schneiderlin/Wotton) and put Lallana out wide. On the left we've got Joseph Mills and honestly, neither of those wingers is actually that fast at all - Lallana never takes on players anymore and when carrying the ball is slowed down terribly. As for Mills, he simply isn't that quick. We really would have just NO attacking pace. We need a speed demon in the mould of someone like Patrick Agyemang or Ivan Sproule in soon - as with both of those examples, they don't even have to be THAT talented - just a threat purely because of their physical attribute of speed.

I certainly wouldn't be averse to signing Trundle - though I think Rasiak could provde the same service were he motivated.

An interesting option might be Lukas Jutkiewitz at Everton. A Southampton boy, signed from Swindon for £1mil but doen the pecking order at Goodison. I've spoken to a few in the know and he'd certainly be keen on a move back down here. Tall, strong and fairly pacy striker; although he is quite slight -does have a physical presence.

Could be worth a look on loan.

To my mind we need two players for every position and I would hope the team might look something like this for Millwall:

Davis

Murty Jaidi Perry Harding

Lallana Schneiderlin Gillett Mills

Rasiak Saganowski

Longer term I think both strikers will need replacing. If they go, we may need to sign up to 4 strikers. Don't like Lallana at right-wing but I don't think he's done enough to be accommodated elsewhere.

James would push Murty at RB

Thomas as one covering CB - need to get one more - preferably a bit younger.

Personally don't rate Molyneux so need extra cover for Harding

McLaggon would I hope push for the right wing slot when he's fit.

Wotton and a new signing to cover at centre mid. Really unsure about Schneiderlin but is ability is indubitable.

Holmes good competition for Mills

With that amount of surgery and some proven new additions I think we have a team capable of promotion

If Rasiak and Saga were motivated that team would tear Millwall apart.

I really hope Pardew can get at least 1 of them up for playing, we shouldn't let them mess us up just because they want to leave. Even if it's only to get them in the shop window, they might have incentive play well.

Interesting, taken from skysports, maybe a loan with an option to buy?

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12876_5472326,00.html

"....The situation with Lee Trundle is he probably needs to be looking elsewhere. If he wants to be playing first-team football this season, and I would like to think he does, then it will have to be somewhere else," said Johnson.

"Unfortunately for him, he is not near the 20 or so first-team players at this moment in time.

There are a few reasons why he's put himself too far down the pecking order but I don't want to go into that."

So what are those few reasons?
