TopGun Posted 2 August, 2009 Share Posted 2 August, 2009 Phil Boyer was my first school boy hero, I can remember playing football in the garden and commentating on myself and I was always Phil Boyer scoring past Man Utd. I had to go swimming on Sat afternoon when Boyer and Channon were up front. I used to imagine the radio commentary as I did the lengths - "Boyer scores again for Saints!" stinhk Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 I totally agree with your sentiments over Boyer. People on this forum may suggest Saga and Rasiak as being lazy but that is never an accusation that could be attached to Phil Boyer. I rarely saw him give less than 100% and although McDougall seemed to grab the headlines, imo it was Boyer who was the hardworking player alongside him . He was one of Southamptons greats in my opinion. A bit off thread I know but I have always carried a Phil Boyer moment in my head, but my memory of it is very cloudy. I'm pretty sure it was a European night fixture, and was probably Anderlecht. It was at the Milton Rd end coz I was in the chocolate boxes. He executed an overhead kick from around the penalty spot that my memory tells me hit the bar. Does anyone have a memory of this or is it a figment of my imagination? Sorry to shatter the memory but the Anderlecht game is one of those you tend to remember. It was in 1977 in the Cup Winners Cup and having lost the 1st leg 2-0 we went 2-0 up in the return ( McDougall and Peach) and were looking probable winners when Jim Steele tried to be a bit too clever at the back and allowed a pass to slip under him which lead to a goal and a final score of 2-1. Boyer had not joined us at the time and I think I'm correct in saying Boyer never played a European game for us.

Foxstone Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Very very lucky for us that Markus Liebherr stayed around ! Just reflect on the alternatives - Markus, an astute businessman acquiring us in a measured and professional manner and offering his own considerable expertise to turn our fortunes around.. Or a consortium of chancers ( perhaps the Pinnacle of incompetence) that sullied the name of our greatest ever player and showed less acumen than Barry the Briefcase. Next time somebody mentions that we are an unlucky club, then reflect on this event - Because after reading Duncan's post we have been very, very lucky indeed! Hmmmm...as I said it's a pretty cloudy memory. Was definitely a night game. I will have to start a little research into this now that is has popped back into my head. Team was : Wells Andruzewski ( Stokes) Peach Holmes Blyth Steele Williams CHANNON Osgood McCalliog ( Hayes) McDougall Boyer was a direct replacement for Channon at the end of the 76/77 season. Frank's cousin Posted 3 August, 2009 Share Posted 3 August, 2009 Amazing therefore that the administrators did not carry out additional due diligince on the proving of funds. I think that Fry should have accepted the £1/2m from the pinnacle group and not Crouch. What is the point of asking a prospective purchaser to prove funds and then accept the monies from someone else. TBF though, if this is true that Pinnacle were looking to finance by leaveraged debt, it would clarify why the adminstrators were prepared to grant exclusivity as this is a common (albeit not in football) that companies are sold - and possibly why Fry always hinted that he preferred teh Swiss bid... but once he set out teh criteria for exclusivity - he was duty bound i guess to grant this to the first party that ful-filled those criteria. The qusetion does arise though as to whetehr teh Swisss would have paid the 500K had pinnacle via crouch not done so? If so Why did not Crouch not recognse them for what they were?
