John B Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Very sad a very decent man would always talk about football. A friend met him at hotel one night and they sat for a couple of hours over a drink chatting about football.
saint1977 Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Tragic news but even before his cancer diagnosis he looked frail at the PFA ceremony a couple of years ago when Sir Alex Ferguson was presenting to him for a Lifetime Award. Great man and track-record speaks for itself. There will be a lot of emotion in Ipswich and Newcastle today where he is a legend. RIP SBR.
Frank's cousin Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Sad news. Great man and heartfelt condolencies to his family. Legend is used too often these days, but he was a true legend of the game.
KK the 2nd Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 A real gentleman and a great ambassador for the sport. Will be sadly missed. RIP
korruptor Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 I'll never forget those World Cups. We've lost a legend
Flyer Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Its been confirmed there will be a minutes silence tomorrow.
glkdcdes Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 A genuinely Great man. Not many people today that would be held in such respect where ever he went. Very sad to hear the news.
Saint_Si Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 An absolute and total legend. I have nothing but total and utter respect for the man. Working with Stan Staunton in charge of the Irish team must have shaded a few years off his life! One of my absolute sporting icons. RIP Bob.
Northam Girls Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Its been confirmed there will be a minutes silence tomorrow. Well I for one will wear my Newcastle shirt with pride for the great man. A Saint I maybe now but I will always be a Geordie - a very very sad day
oxfordshire_saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 A true legend of the game, not just in this country but worldwide. When I went to a Porto game the other year, upon hearing I was English, the first thing any Porto fan mentioned was Sir Bobby. I remember an interview with Shola Ameobi a few years ago, when asked if Bobby had a nickname for him, he replied, "yeah, Carl Cort", such was his infamous ability to forget his player's names!
Appy Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP. A true gent and a great football man. Will be sorely missed.
Whitey Grandad Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 For those who can bear to watch it, the BBC's Sports Personality lifetime achievement award (bottom of the screen): http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8177945.stm And at Barcelona: http://www.fcbarcelona.com/web/english/noticies/futbol/temporada09-10/07/n090731106011.html RIP Sir Bobby, you have left us all such fond memories.
Pat from Poole Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 My favourite Sir Bobby memory is from the season when we got to the Cup Final and we played Newcastle at home and drew 1-1 in a really good game. In the last few minutes, we nearly won it when O'Brien from Newcastle headed the ball against his own bar. In the post-match interview, the interviewer says to Sir Bobby something along the lines of "You must have had your heart in your mouth when O'Brien headed the ball against your own crossbar?" Completely deadpan, Sir Bobby replied: "Oh no, we practice that in training all the time." I thought that was a genius response to a pretty daft question. Top man.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Incredibly sad loss to English football. RIP Sir Bobby and best wishes to his family.
hasper57saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Met him at the Dell quite a few years ago. A true 'Gentleman' in every sense of the word. RIP Sir Bobby you are sorely missed.
SO5 4BW Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP indeed. Obviously the first thoughts are with his family but from a purely football point of view it's touching that this many heartfelt messages are on the site of a team that he never managed or played for - and I'm sure that this would be replicated across the football community. The really sad thing is that I can't see this sort of thing being replicated fifty years down the line - from todays generation of players there'll be a lot of rich old men but very few who are as well loved or respected. A shame.
Dicko Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 I haven't received or heard a single tasteless joke about his passing. Usually when someone famous dies, the jokes come thick and fast A measure of the respect & love the whole football world had for him
bpsaint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Met Sir Bobby at my graduation in Ipswich, shock his hand and told him he was he greatest English manager ever. He shock his head and said "It's not about me today son it's about you". A true gent - RIP What an incredible thing to say to someone, that must have felt amazing to hear. Very saddened to hear about his death,a true footballing legend. I remember when he first came to the Dell as Newcastle manager in the 00/01 season and he got an incredible ovation from the Saints fans as he made he way to the dugout which showed how well respected he was throughout the football community. R.I.P. Sir Bobby.
rooney Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 He was the only Manager who came to SMS who I can remember had a standing ovation. The Northam sang "Theres only one Bobby Robson" and a great game followed with a 3-3 draw with Newcastle. The referee had a good game too, I believe it was Mr Dowd. RIP Sir Bobby, a great man and ambassador for the game.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 He MADE Mexico 86 for me, Great England Manager. RIP
Leicestersaint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby Robson in 1989. He was very genuine and considerate. Rest in peace Bobby. XXXXXX
rolosfc Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 So sad to hear of his death, some of the stories people have told about him are truly moving. Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of meeting the guy but the twinkle he has always had in his eye for football has made him a true legend. RIP Sir Bobby, you will be missed.
mcjwills Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP Bobby Now your in the great football league in the Sky, go and search out Ted and Brian for a chat on how footballers should behave.
S-Clarke Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 ah - so sad. He's someone I've always really admired and i'll never forget the way he was kicked out of Newcastle. Bloody Freedy Shepard He is loved all around the world and a legend is exactly what he is. RIP.
Legod Third Coming Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 The most over used word in football is "legend" but in this case, its the truth. RIP. My sentiments exactly. A man so many managers learned from and more should have done. RIP Bobby.
Junction 9 Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 I honestly can't think of another man in football who would receive such genuine and heartfelt tributes as Bobby has today. A huge loss.
maxi_sopez Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP a True Legend, and this is the first time in ages on any forums or any friends i havent heard one tasteless joke or rude comment which normally comes with a famous death, it just shows what a GREAT man he was. RIP Sir.
aintforever Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 A huge loss to football, Bobby was a great manager but also a really nice bloke. RIP.
Ewell Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 It is without a doubt the saddest day I have ever had as a football fan. I never met the man but like everyone else you felt you knew him. I loved his passion for the game, the way he got the best out of players. He was just an inspiration and a true legend of the game. He is without doubt the best England manager of the best England team in my lifetime! He never managed or played for my club but there is no one else in the game I have ever felt more love and fondness for. Thanks for the memories Bobby and R.I.P. old chap.
John B Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Just read his obituary on the BBC website http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/4779033.stm Quite a record probably the best English Manager ever
corsacar saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Football legend, magnificent human being. Sadly both these traits are somewhat lacking in the game as a whole.
tommi Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 The word legend is used far too frequently these days. Sir Bobby Robson was a LEGEND. RIP Sir Bobby, you will be sorely missed.
Asaint4ever Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP sir bobby! always will be rememerd as a top bloke and most of all a world class football manager and coach! yet again RIP
Tractor_Saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Author Posted 31 July, 2009 Amazing in these times to think that Bobby was a manager for the same team from '69 to '82. Bought a tear to my eye this video: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8178547.stm
macthesaint Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 Remember when he first took over as England manager,a group of us spotted him in a motorway stop after an away game.He was trying to have a relaxing cuppa whilst listening to us urging him to pick Steve Williams. The thoughtful and good humoured way he spoke with us was brilliant.Steve did get his chance but Sir Bobby came so close to glory wih England. Top bloke and manager wherever he went.Rest In Peace.
sadoldgit Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 Many years ago when manager of England Sir Bobby was booked to come and speak at our club's annual dinner and dance. Despite only being a few days away from the World Cup and the fact that no one would have had a problem if he had pulled out to concentrate on his preparations, he not only turned up but gave a fantastic speech too - to a bunch of Sunday morning hoofers! A true gent and someone who will be greatly missed by the football world. RIP Sir Bobby.
Wildgoose Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 Very sad to hear of his death. A real gent and an ordinary (yet extraordinary) bloke. A great ambassador for England and for Football in general, wherever he went. One of the best respected managers in the game. Always loved listening to his views. Football will be the poorer without him. RIP Sir Bobby Robson
JustMike Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 glad to see he is getting the respect he deserves. Clubs up and down the country observing a minutes silence, even Real Madrid have had a minutes applause in the peace cup they are playing in. Loved the world over
East Leake Saint Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 RIP Sir Bobby. The best England manager in my lifetime and more than that you seemed to be a wonderful person. A true gent and one off who will be missed by so many. Deepest sympathy to your friends and family.
