saint_stevo Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 sad news, but haven't seen on it on the news sights anywhere? Breaking news on BBC and SSN
chrisobee Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Very sad but he did amazingly well to keep going for so long. RIP.
Saintjersey Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Absolutely gutted. RIP Bobby, you were a true legend.
Thedelldays Posted 31 July, 2009 Author Posted 31 July, 2009 just read out his football achievements on the radio... dont think we have produced a manager that has been as successful as he has in so many teams
FMPR Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Least this is one thing where banter is off the menu. RIP Sir Bobby, true legend
Minty Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8177945.stm One of the few who truly deserve the 'legend' tag. RIP.
sambosa75 Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Absolute warrior for beating it as many times as he did. Thoughts go out to his wife Elsie and his family. This has ruined my day.
equalizer Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP to a legend, always remember the great games when his Ipswich side came to the Dell in the early eighties!
Thedelldays Posted 31 July, 2009 Author Posted 31 July, 2009 even though I was 10 during italia 90..That time still is one of the very few times I can remember being so proud of the england team
Give it to Ron Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP Sir Bobby...in football the word legend is used far too often but he truly was one. I read his autobiography last year and it was superb, you dont get to manage clubs as big as he did without being special. Will be sadly missed in the footballing world.....commiserations to his family.
Minty Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 even though I was 10 during italia 90..That time still is one of the very few times I can remember being so proud of the england team Likewise... I was 14 and at a school open evening that night... virtually every person there either had a radio or access to one, and hardly anyone was paying attention to the actual school open evening... after the last presentation, everyone left quicker than i've ever seen anyone leave a building in my life, and we got home for the second half of extra time. Never forget that.
keithd Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP that man. Fabulous England manager, took us from the days of the turnip to so close to being world cup finalists. his comment after we were beaten in the semi by west germany was fantatsic. he said "if we'd got to the final, i cant say for certain we'd have beaten Argentina, but my god, my mortgage would have been on it." RIP
scott_saints Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP. Was it actually possible NOT to like the man?! I'm glad he got a good send off last week though for the charity game.
Sheaf Saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 He came across as a true gentleman. Very sad news indeed. Rest in peace Sir Bobby.
Pancake Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP that man. Fabulous England manager, took us from the days of the turnip to so close to being world cup finalists. Taylor was after Robson.
saint_bert Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Actually really really upset by this. The man obviously meant alot to me and I didn't realise. Newcastle's downward spiral started when they got rid of him do ungraciously. They didn't deserve the man.
sotonjoe Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Taylor was after Robson. yeh, that's what i was thinking. Not an easy mistake to make!
Minty Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Some great quotes of his from over the years: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/4780199.stm
saint_stevo Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 The former England manager died peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer
Thedelldays Posted 31 July, 2009 Author Posted 31 July, 2009 looking back..just how good was that england team of italia 90..? superb team with the players giving their all...todays team would do well to learn from them
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 R.I.P. one of football's true, and rare, Gentlemen. I expect there's a kickabout going on up there right now.
Smirking_Saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 West Ham and the Beijing team are wearing black armbands. Fair play.
Saint Keith Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 freddie shepherd should hang his head in shame the way he drove him out of newcastle
Dimond Geezer Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Not unexpected, but still very sad to hear. RIP Sir Bob, last of the footballing gents.
Ohio Saint Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Most of all I remember the immense pride that the England team had under him which was only matched by our pride for the team in '90. RIP Sir Booby
Poshie72 Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Deeply saddened by his passing. Another true legend gone to the great stadium in the sky. RIP Sir Bobby My condolences to your family and friends
Foxstone Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 Best English manager of all time, IMO. RIP Sir Bob. Second by a whisker to Clough in my opinion. But without doubt one of the finest gentlemen ever to grace the sport, in a sport where gentlemen do not often abound nowadays. Great, great man and a great, great loss to the sporting world!
saintwarwick Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 RIP Sir Bobby, an awesome manager at so many clubs. Condolences to your family.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 I don't think i've ever been more affected/upset by a non Saints football person passing away. True football legend and gentleman. One memory sticks in my mind about how respected he was when i was up in Newcastle out in a busy city centre pub after Newcastle Saints game when the whole pub went silent when Sir Bobby Robson was being interviewed on tv. RIP
Simples Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 Listening to the radio earlier one dj said how the cancer had beaten him in the end. The other dj corrected him saying 'No he beat the cancer 4-1'. I follow the sentiments written above. RIP Sir Bobby.
Mr Saints Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 Interviewer: Shola, what's your nickname? Ameobi: I don't really have one. Interviewer: What do the lads call you? Ameobi: Just Shola usually. Interviewer: What does Bobby Robson call you? Ameobi: Carl Cort RIP Sir Bobby
revolution saint Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 RIP Bobby. I've just been trawling through youtube and the thing that comes across isn't what a great manager he was (though obviously he was) but what a great man he was. Genuinely likeable, humble, interesting, funny and many other things. He's like the nations favourite Grandad. He was a top bloke and proof that nice people get what they deserve - respect and affection.
Redbul Posted 1 August, 2009 Posted 1 August, 2009 RIP Sir Bobby. When I heard this news yesterday I genuinely misted up. What an ambassador to the great game, a true gent who thoroughly deserves the status of legend. Sincere condolences to his family.
