sotonjoe Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 I've been quoted £360 to supply and fit one window. Size is 1240X500. It's a window to go at the top of the stairs, with a small vertically opening pane at the top and the rest of the window side hinged and horizontal opening. All frosted glass. Sound about right?

Sounds like an odd-shaped window! Have you got your horizontal and vertical mixed up? How can you have a side-hinged horizontal opening

Very reasonable if you're talking about metres.

sotonjoe Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 Very reasonable if you're talking about metres. 1.2m X 0.5m? You think it's expensive?
bridge too far Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 side opening then? Still doesn't make sense, Stanley
Block 5 Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 I'll do it for free and tarmac yer drive and re-point yer brickwork and walk ya to the feckin cashpoint.
sotonjoe Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 Still doesn't make sense, Stanley a window that opens from the side. I'm not sure why you don't get that:confused:
bridge too far Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 a window that opens from the side. I'm not sure why you don't get that:confused: The only way a horizontal window could open 'from the side' is if it is a sliding window.
sotonjoe Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 The only way a horizontal window could open 'from the side' is if it is a sliding window. Ignore the horizontal bit then. It's a fairly average sized / shaped window that opens from the side.
bridge too far Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 Ignore the horizontal bit then. It's a fairly average sized / shaped window that opens from the side. And the little window at the top opens horizontally then? Like the little ones at the top here: Incidentally, whilst googling for images (saddo that I am) I noticed that Zenith windows have a 50% sale on right now. But it's probably volume related rather than for one-off windows.
hamster Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 Shop around, seriously Joe, and tell them all that you have a better quote from someone else.
hamster Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 /\ Have you considered doing it yourself? Serious savings if you are up to doing it. I used your specs and got a quote for less than £150 from this bunch: http://www.windowsanddoors.co.uk/estimate/ Have a play and add remove some options until you get what you want. And/or even try this site, (it was very good for us) to find someone to fit it. http://www.ratedpeople.com/ hth
sotonjoe Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 thanks for the safestyle uk pic! Incidentally they've been sending their sales people up and down my road several days this week, but they were the most dodgy looking people in the world and there was no way they were setting foot in my house. Gonna get a company called Pro Glaze round for a quote as well; they have a little shop on Rownhams Road, Maybush, and seem popular on Checkatrade.

SNAP. Do you live in Bassett? I was nearly rude to the lad who knocked yesterday, only had to repeat "WE ARE NOT INTERESTED" 3 times.

I used Zenith for the double glazing on my house,it's a good product but you do have to beat them right down on price or they will rip you off. Also expect to get sale calls forever and a day off them.

I think they're all the same, the big boys. We're getting quotes for a conservatory ATM and I couldn't believe my ears when one company more than halved its quote in the space of 10 minutes! The usual line was trotted out 'this offer is only valid for 21 days'. My retort was 'well I'm getting a couple of other quotes so I'll wait until then'. Suddenly, another 5% off! We still haven't chosen who will do the work.
Trader Posted 31 July, 2009 Posted 31 July, 2009 You know the one - buy one get one free, buy one get one free. Phone ?????? noooowwwww! So, get two from them and sell one for £360. Result - one free window!! This might not work though. And the windows are probably carp, I wouldn't trust that bloke that does the ad as far as I could spit.
spyinthesky Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 Pro Glaze was mentioned earlier on. They fitted my replacement windows recently. Decent price and good service. I had a subsequent problem with my conservatory roof (nothing to do with them as built several years ago). They came round and fixed FOC

It is not easy to sell an already made up window. It would be regarded as a "Missmeasure" in the trade. Probable only use would be someones garden shed or the like that could be easily altered to suit. That's why most UPVC windows are "bespoke" ie made to order.
Ponty Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 I'm also pretty sure they don't give you a free window (in a box - so to speak) when you have one fitted. I think the idea is that, in a typical 8 window house, you only pay for 4 if they do the whole lot.

Dimond Geezer Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 I bought a window of a similar size from B&Q, I had to order it specially as it's a bespoke size, although not frosted glass, it cost me about £80. I was quoted about £70 by an independent window fitter (found in yellow pages) to fit it. I did it myself yesterday, took me & my old man (neither of us are window fitters, or buildres etc) about an hour - dead easy.
tpbury Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 Of course it's even cheaper if you heat up sand at high temperature, make the glass yourself, use your mates PVC extrusion machine, work up some fittings on an anvil, bish bash bosh, new window - while your fitting it, build the extension you've been meaning to. Do that on the Saturday, and then strip your motorbike down on Sunday, count the springs in the engine block, tune it up, bish bash bosh - just like a new bike!!!

Beckster Von Doodle Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 Try The Glassworks in Swaythling ... know them personally and will do you a good job at a decent price.
