Bailey Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 I'm one of the few that believe Smith could actually be a half-decent player under the right management. He's very quick and isn't afraid to run at defenders, but his final ball and lack of upper body strength really let him down. Anyway, I do find it quite odd that he's on trial at Palace, and I'd be very surprised if Warnock offered him a contract. He's everything Warnock doesn't like in a footballer. As I've said, he's pretty lightweight and his work rate leaves a lot to be desired. NW generally goes for big, physical players who never shy away from a 50/50 tackle. Time will tell, but I don't think people will be seeing Smith in a Palace shirt next season!
SaintDonkey Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 Ryan Smith was always a decent player. I saw him for Arasenal way back and was impressed. Delighted when we signed him and bemused when we released him. I took 3 neutrals to the Charlton home game last season all of whom thought he was probably our best outfield player in a dire match. However he has failed at too many clubs, I don't know what it is about him, I'd guess attitude - thinking he's better than he is, but I don't expect him to ever fufil his potential. L1Minus10 Posted 31 July, 2009 Share Posted 31 July, 2009 Would rather have kept Smith than Holmes to be honest. At least Smith has the potential to be a proper winger in that he will take people on and has the skill and the pace. Wotte got that bit right.... what he got wrong was playing him on the right wing when he was totally left footed. Also had no upper body strength so got bullied out of everything.
