Niemi to Pompey

It just shows you that your judgement is probably suspect if you think that many footballers have a loyalty to a particular club.

It is just a job to them no emotion like you have for SFC

Little bit different with players like Niemi who IMO are one of about 2 in my life time who deserve to be called a legend.

Mick Channon played for Pompey. He's still a hero to me.

Bigger saints legends than niemi have pulled on the filthy blue shirt......channon,ball,stokes that's just of the top of my head but I'm sure Duncan will be able to provide a comprehensive list.

Quite right! Bobby Stokes went to Fartton a year after winning the Cup for us. Did anybody feel disappointed about that and hate him. Players have been transferred between the clubs for as long as I can remember. No big deal really. It`s what they do when they are with us that really counts.

+1 to all of the above. No problem for me.

I have been watching SFC since 1962 in my opinion

there have been five legends in that time

PAINE DAVIES CHANNON MLT STOKES

Great Characters Good Players too

O'Neill McGrath Steele Osgood Kirby Golac

Outstanding Players

Shilton Keegan Ball

Very Good Players

Chivers Armstrong Watson Svennson Williams Niemmi George Worthington Mills Dennis Bridge Beattie Crouch etc

Three of the legends also played for Pompey without achieving much.

Unfortunately in the last ten years we have not had many very good players and that is probably the main reason we find ourselves in League 1

The Skates must be desperate. Bit disappointed in Antti but not like he signed for them in his prime or anywhere near. They have also signed Finnan which is at best a CCC signing and over the hill at PL level. I know a lot of Pompey fans and every single one of them is very worried, would take 4th from bottom in a heartbeat and are only taking solace in the fact no-one will sign for Hull. The takeover does not appear to have any real money attached and they are hoping that the anonymous money men that wouldn't reveal their identities this summer show up later in the season.

I would be absolutely gutted if Niemi went to Pompey, but at the end of the day my opinion wouldn't change that much on him. I will always remember him for his fantastic saves and the great memories he has given me.

I agree. If I could choose I'd rather he went elsewhere, but I'm actually pleased for him that he's still able to make a living "playing" for a bit longer. Won't change my opinion of his time with Saints.

Do we think less of Mick Channon or Bobby Stokes for playing there at the tail end of their careers? No. So I won't of Antti either.

He's gone down heavily in my estimation but I would have thought the Pompey fans won't take too kindly to the signing either. From the looks of the article it has happened, so I don't know why people are doubting it. Saddest thing is he could have done a great job for us instead of Davis...? (one for nickh)

If Niemi can get a further pay day at the expense of the Skates then good luck to him, it does not reduce my opinion of him. It matters not a jot to me or most others if he goes to Pompey. Some of our greatest players played for Pompey as well, Davies, Channon and Stokes, then there was MacLoughlin as well (LOL). The main point is that all of these players played for Pompey after their best days at Saints, and it does not diminish them in any way whatsoever.

And 3 of the 5 played for Pimpley after leaving us.

Would be a shame to see Niemi wear a filthy P*mpey shirt, but that's football, it is an occupation and a job, and a job has to be done. So if he wants to be a second keeper in a club that's sinking faster than the Titanic then let him, and good luck to him. Let's just not forget what he done for OUR club, I'm sure the skates won't let him forget that either.

I'd say James days are numbered then.... will probably see their no2 keeper become no1 and Niemi go in as backup for him...

We can only hope - would take their tally of England internationals from 5 down to 0!! (and end the crowing on that front!).

'Pompey sign over the hill player and chuck more money out of the door' - it works for me as an idea!

James leaves, Niemi is injured, suddenly they would have a youth team keeper in front of an appalling defence.

Niemi was great for us, always will be, and sadly his career ended too early.

And recalling Nathan Dyer's finest hour, legendary status could be confirmed on Niemi with one dropped cross in front of the Fratton End...this transfer has comedy legs....

He didn't really ever wear a Saints shirt 'cos he was the goalie.

IMO Tim Flowers was our greatest ever - he kept us up for a few seasons (with a little help from the great one).

I recall Eric Martin (GK from the early '70's) always wore a saints shirt under him 'keepers shirt - was he always hopefull that Ted would play him upfront one day? (like my under 13's keeper).

I would be totally gutted if that happened. Niemi is my favourite player in my life time and I have many fond memories of him - this would some what destroy those memories!

I don't quite understand how your memories of him can be destroyed if he plays for Pompey. Aren't you able to tell yourself that he was probably the best goalkeeper we have ever had and remember those fantastic saves he made for us and give him a break?

He's entitled to earn a living anywhere he wants to - do you expect him to sit at home, twiddling his thumbs saying to himself - I'd like to get back in the Prem but I can't play for Pompey because I was a Saint?

Get real.

All this anti Pompey stuff is really over the top and to keep on singing that boring song about them at games is pointless - and it does nothing to encourage the team either.

So Niemi has a choice here;

1. Turn down Pompey, get paid f*ck all and sit on his @rse all day watching Jeremy Kyle, or;

2. Accept the deal, earn (say) £250k and sit on his @rse watching sh*te football

Everyone and anyone would choose 2

3 Accept the deal, earn (say) £250k and sit on his @rse watching good football - there are usually 2 teams, hopefully most will play well against the Skates

I'm a slightly surprised he's considering going there because he's one player in recent years I felt had a genuine affection for Saints. I guess it's the Cole connection which has brought this about. No reason why he shouldn't go there if he wants to of course.

The real story here is that this is a player that retired from the game last season due to a wrist injury. Are the Skates desperate or what?

If he goes then I'll be a bit disappointed but it won't change my opinion of him. Niemi is arguably the best keeper ever to wear a Saints shirt and fans should never forget his contribution to our club.

If he joins P*mpey, then so be it. It's possible that David Coles has had a word with him and tempted him out of retirement, and maybe Niemi likes the idea of getting one last pay-cheque before hanging up his boots for good?

Whatever happens, the guy was first-class for us and he should be remembered for the fantastic performances he produced during his time here, not for sitting on the bench at P*mpey for a season, picking up a nice pay-cheque in the process.

Ditto.

Double agent Niemi!

Would love it if he went there and James left - he's well past his best now.

One of the best 5 Saints players I have seen since 1989, but has gone down hill. I have no problem at all with him contributing to Pompey's decline.

have you SEEN how Niemi plays at Fratton Park! he's a feckin nightmare. They'll get relegated easy.

exactly what I thought. Niemi was great with us, but that performance was sh*te.

I'm not bothered if Niemi signs for Pompey, he is a professional footballer being offered a chance (by his old coach) to come out of retirement and has an opportunity to play prem football again I would be surprised if he turned it down.
