Robsk II Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/8172664.stm The german league does seem to have shown some much needed interest and life recently, with some real shake ups, decent players coming through and staying there for a time etc... But I'm not quite sure Martins can even persuade the Deutschlanders that it will be the best league in the world soon. Based on what..? I know he's got to look keen and so on, but.. seems a bit of an excessive claim to me..?
Dicko Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 I used to enjoy watching the Bundesliga on Setanta - some real quality entertainment As for Martins, I saw him play for Inter on 2 or 3 occasions & thought he looked a world beater To say he's been a disappointment is an understatement
Rattlehead Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 It's loose talk like this that will make the Krauts think they can take over the world again. Third time lucky and all that.
Robsk II Posted 28 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 28 July, 2009 Careless talk costs lives. Seriously, though - I'm not besmirching the Bundesliga at all, it doesn't get the credit it should - but by most measures, can it compete with the Premiership, Serie A, la Liga? I wouldn't say so. Mao Cap Posted 29 July, 2009 Share Posted 29 July, 2009 Bundesliga can't compete with the Premiership, Serie A etc. for the amount of stepovers and other such bullsh*t, but for excitement it wins hands down. Wolfsburg winning it? That's the equivalent of Boro or Fulham putting a run together and ending up with the title.
stevegrant Posted 29 July, 2009 Share Posted 29 July, 2009 Not sure who I'd compare Wolfsburg to in this country really. While the fanbase is probably equivalent to a Boro or a Fulham, they also have the rather handy financial backing of Volkswagen. Only three clubs in the Bundesliga aren't predominantly owned by their members - Bayer Leverkusen (owned by Bayer), Wolfsburg (VW) and Hoffenheim (rich benefactor who bankrolled promotion to the top flight for the first time last season... they were top at the mid-season break)

Afraid to say as a follower of Serie A that the Bundesliga are very close to overtaking Serie A in terms of Uefa Coeffiecient rankings & if the Serie A teams don't pick it up this season then next season expect to see 4 German teams in the CL & only 3 Italian. Werder Bremen beat both Milan & Inter last season btw.

Foxstone Posted 29 July, 2009 Share Posted 29 July, 2009 I love the Bundesliga. Genuinely competitive league, great entertainment ( any one doubting that should have watched the Bremen v Hamburg UEFA semi), the clubs are still engrained into the fabric of the local area hence great fan "buy in" and resulting big crowds ! And you can still drink beer on terraces !
