suewhistle Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 And DON'T say "it's more technical than the men's game", we all know that's just code for "no pressure on the ball"... What, like Saints last season? Anyway, I'd find it difficult to comment, but obviously fairly low. There's an awful lot of pressure on women not to play once they get past a certain age, and it's no surprise that in many teams there is a large proportion of lesbians as they are the only ones strong enough to put up with the sort of crap we've seen on this thread. Go and watch an international live and you'd get a better idea. Better than Sunday footie anyway!, and the last I watched down at Fratton (England v Denmark) was enjoyable to watch, and all the players very fit (in all senses of the word)! When you get the likes of part-time Bognor players (once had a chat with treasurer a few years ago) getting £250 match fees it puts the whole thing into perspective. Most womens' teams would love a sponsor giving them 250 for a season!

lenwilkins Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 Well, I'm not going to bite too hard as I'm not prepared to waste too much time replying to some of the Cro-Magnons on here. Italian football may not be better generally, or even as widespread but it is better organised, coached and funded, although I haven't worked out how yet! I haven't had to pay _anything_ in fees in spite of twice a week training sessions (in gyms when the weather is bad and every night at the beginning of the season) and my only expenses have been for travel when I've used my own car for nearby away matches. We have a masseur/physio who does prep and bandaging before games and remedial stuff at training. This is Italian 3rd Division regional football and there is only one division below us. It makes a difference from the scrabble for funds in the UK and the high match fees. I'm really chuffed to be playing footie (if from the bench) as I'm over 50 and when I was young I didn't get the chance to play organised football at school (hockey, aargh..) . Just playing for the sheer bloody pleasure of clipping a ball down the line, or pinging a crisp ball to a team-mate or annoying the heck out of the opposition defence - it's about playing. Saints contributes to community work including coaches for kids who are never going to be professional so the small amount to help improve a womens' team would be nothing on the same principal. A few kits and use of facilities would be a massive help, for example. The big clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sporting etc. all have loads of different sporting sections, and it doesn't take away from their success. It's all about community, and there's no obligation to go and watch any of them. Great post and as you say Sue, it's all about Saints being part of the community. The quality isn't the main thing and the cost of helping the ladies team need not be great. One of the big expenses running a club is the cost of hiring training and match grounds. Saints have an underused facility at Staplewood that would be ideal.

Jeez. I'm guessing you were once nutmegged by a girl footballer at school and it's caused you lasting and severe emotional distress, right? eurosaint Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 SueWhistle is gonna like this : I have seen one ladies match in my life and that was in Italy (Trani, near Bari) where a business associate of mine was the club owner ! I was treated like a king (I was his biggest customer after all !) and shown around the very impressive facilities before watching from the director's box ! I think there were about 3,000 people there ! They played Juventus and it was not only a good standard but thrilling as well ! I had a great day out and swore that I would attend ladies matches when I got back home which (as it happens) I never did ! Perhaps because of this, I think some of the posts on here are totally out of order !
SFC Forever Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 I did mention this subject a while back on another thread. Personally I feel it could be a double whammy. It wouldn't cost a lot to allow the girls back into the fold as they could always play at Staplewood. Lowe slung them out years ago and ever since they have struggled. It would be another way to show the world our prowess and colours. Anything that can bring our city to the fore has to be a good thing.
SW5 SAINT Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 Absolutely not, I don't why there should be any link at all. Nothing to do with one another, should be kept totally separate.

Robsk II Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 Ladies football might not be as good as mens at the moment, but at the end of the day I'm happy to watch **** local teams over doing anything constructive or watching snooker, so why not womens? What the hell. If it costs next to nothing, who cares? Why would anyone be actively against it other than to push a ridiculous sexist agenda? Colinjb Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 If Marcus Leibherr is serious about making Saints back into the community club it used to be then he has to give serious thought into resurrecting the Girl's team. I will give the benefit of doubt to a lot of the trolling posts regarding women's football. I do understand that it may not be the rough, tough man on man action these red blooded hetro's can only get away with watching without feeling insecure that they are used to, but we had THE BEST womens team in the history of the discpline in this country. That is something worth reviving, protecting and celebrating.

If the men show anything like the same passion this season we will easily win the league.
Barry Horne Posted 28 July, 2009 Share Posted 28 July, 2009 And how would ladies football achieve this..? What hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet is that up until our relegation from The Prem, Saints also ran the girls' school of excellence at U10 12, 14 and 16 levels. These girls are the best in the county and play against girls from other FA schools of excellence across the country. In our region that means the likes of Charlton, Reading and Chelsea. From these centres come the England internationals. After our relegation the centre was taken over by Hampshire FA and now the girls play matches under the county name and not that of Southampton. I've seen the girls play at all levels and make no mistake, they'd take a lot of boys' teams apart. The one-touch stuff is great to watch and personally I'd take that over hoof it and run any day of the week.
