Redbul Posted 27 July, 2009 Share Posted 27 July, 2009 Went to see this at Harbour Lights last night. I left with the feeling that it was an evening well spent at the flicks. A basic synopsis: Sam Bell is a miner of Helium 3, a new clean energy source for Earth that is mined on the moon. He is just coming to the end of his 3 year contract. The real time communication uplinks to Earth have been broken and the only company he has had in all this time is with GERTY, the mine base computer ( reminiscent of HAL) voiced by Kevin Spacey. Naturally, after all this time all he wants to to do is go home to his wife and daughter, but begins to hallucinate and starts to doubt his sanity. He ends up having an accident whilst checking one of the Helium 3 'Harvesters' on the moon surface and is knocked unconscious. Recovering in the infirmary GERTY tells him rescue mission is on its way to sort out the damage caused by the accident. Sam takes an unauthorised trip back the crash site where he makes a bizarre discovery which makes him doubt his sanity even more.... It's a gentle but intelligent film which will remind people of films like Dark Star, Silent Running, 2001; the interior of the moon base is not too disimilar to that in Alien and the moon surface scenery looks like it's been lifted from Space 1999 or UFO!!!! Sam Rockwell plays the part of Sam Bell very well and the Clint Mansell (ex Pop Will Eat Itself) score gives it the perfect edge. Go and see it, you won't be disappointed.
