Saint Billy Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 (edited) Has he played in any friendlies? Pardy mentioned that a couple of players are not really interested in playing in League 1 and we have all assumed that it is Saga and Rasiak. As Rasiak seems to be getting games I wonder if it is actually Saga and Schneiderlin in reality. I find it difficult to believe that Rasiak would be put in the side just to put him in the shop window, not exactly the way to get the team gelling so close to our first league game. So, just a guess with a smidge of hope, Rasiak might stay and Schneiderlin will be off. Edited 27 July, 2009 by Saint Billy Sorry guys
Glasgow_Saint Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 not really interested in playing in League 2 Nooooooooooooo! Why us, why god why???
Wildgoose Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 He has had an injury according to the OS. But you may well be right. I reckon he will be off anyway.......
Wildgoose Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Nooooooooooooo! Why us, why god why??? Haha. Back to your normal self I see! I'm gettin so used to looking at the lower leagues I didn't even notice the reference to League 2!
Rusaldo Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 He came off the bench against Ajax, and didnt play a part against Hearts. Apart from that im not too sure.

dellgirl Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Morgan has played for his Country as Captain of the under 20's during the early pre- season and put up a good performance against Ajax,I think he got a knock in training and as I think he could be massive for us under AP, I very much hope you are wrong, but as the French have rated him for years, perhaps his agent feels he should be playing elsewhere now we are temporarily in the third tier. I feel sorry for him as I think his first season for us was not as good as it should have been due entirely to forces beyond his control,as I think will be shown with several other players who suffered under the shambles that was last season at St. Marys
DT Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 now we are temporarily in the third tier. Given that we start on -10, I very much admire this kind of optimism. Might be a long temporary...

I feel sorry for him as I think his first season for us was not as good as it should have been due entirely to forces beyond his control,as I think will be shown with several other players who suffered under the shambles that was last season at St. Marys The trouble is that he does'nt really do the job for us, he reads like my old school report, "Has potential but does'nt try". Out of the two I would prefer Rasiak, funnily enough , much of the time he looks uninterested as well but he has the potentsil to score a lot of goals in this league assuming that we cannot keep both.
Crowds Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Wasn't he away with the under20's this summer? As I understand he's a few weeks behind in the preseason build up? Possible reason for not much visibility atm?
Charlie Wayman Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Morgan played against Ajax and demonstrated that he has vision and ability aplenty, so much so in fact that AP would have automatically included him against Hearts had he been fit and willing. So which is it? I think he is far too good for this league and he is only a kid so why would he want to spend 5,6 or 7 years, i.e., his whole career, helping Saints get back to the Promised Land when he could develop and mature with a PL team like Arsenal with far brighter prospects over that period of time, more money, more medals, more international caps. Why would anybody want to be a professional footballer from abroad playing in a foreign country for a THIRD RATE team that his mates back home have never heard of, from a town they would struggle to find on a map. This is where we fans have to swallow hard and accept reality despite all the hoopla that goes with a rich new owner and a newly appointed manager eager to please. We are where we are and not where our hearts think we should be. Players have short careers in which every year counts and which could be their last because of the cruelties of fate and the whims of feckless and bigoted managers. Hay is made in the sunshine, which the French will know better than us as they have far more experience.

He needs to have a fantastic season (or 2) before you can say he is too good for us and ready for the PL. Edited 27 July, 2009 by Glasgow_Saint
the saint in winchester Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Came off the bench against Ajax I think. He did. And he played well in a midfield being run by Dutch craftsmen. Believe me, I haven't rated MS at all since he came in a large fee, I couldn't see what others saw in him, but for 15-20 mins vs Ajax, I did see it.
Wes Tender Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Why would anybody want to be a professional footballer from abroad playing in a foreign country for a THIRD RATE team that his mates back home have never heard of, from a town they would struggle to find on a map. He was playing for a second rate team in France, you know. As for his mates not having heard of us or being unable to find Southampton on a map, there must be some really thick people in that area of France then. I think that you'll find that if his mates are a similar age to him, then they'll certainly know that we were a mainstay in the Premiership for 27 years and if they watched the FA Cup in 2003, which they might well have, they'll have no problem remembering us or our city. Most people with even a basic education would know that we are an important British port, even if they watched the Titanic film, in the same way that most Southampton people recognise that Le Havre, Cherbourg, Marseille and Toulon are French Ports. Most of our fans would know the names of the top French clubs by hearing of them in the European football matches. Taxi drivers in Bangkok have heard of us and delight in reeling off names like Le Tisser. Quite why you don't credit the French players with the same facility to know about us is beyond me.
forever a red and white Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 i really don;t get the criticsm of Morgan. People say he is light weight but he does challenge for the ball, he is fairly quick and can pass the ball well. When he came on against Ajax he looked lively and immediatly man marked the very physical DM for Ajax and challenged well. He has just had his first season in English football in one of our worst teams in recent history, fans have far to much expectation of him. He will come good and could prove to be a very valuable player this season, give the lad a chance ffs.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 when he could develop and mature with a PL team like Arsenal with far brighter prospects We are a BIG club and UAE Football League champions Al Ahli agree with me. Infact they describe us as a "top Premier League team" http://www.gulfnews.com/sport/Football/10335035.html
Toadhall Saint Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 MS - Quality player. Has been hamstrung by last season with no clear direction for him (IMHO). He will come good but not sure if that will be with us.
Eastcowzer Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Yep, boobies are good! (.Y.) Ref: the Fallen Madonna with the big .......
Saint Richard of Woolston Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 I would agree that Morgan didn't 'do it' for us last year. But he is a young man who entered a shambolic situation in a foreign country. I don't think we have seen the best of him and reckon he will end up a pretty good player. Hopefully with us but I can see him being surplus to what is required to get us out of this League which tends to be a bit more 'basic' than Morgan offers.

I have been saying much of that for I don't know how long, however no one is going to tell me that he gets stuck in. I watched the vast majority of games last season and he made about 7 tackles all in. For a central midfielder that is not good enough. I know the game has changed and you have to stay on your feet a lot more, but if he wants to succeed at any level he still has to put his foot in once in a while. One thing I am sure of is that to win games you need quality players that keep the ball and he offers that. The SMS pitch is made for passing football and he has already demonstrated he pass well. I hope he, Mills, Patterson and Lallana stay. I think it is essential to have decent young players that we can follow for years to come and call our own. Give these four lads some time, some slack and plenty of backing and at the very least they will improve their market value. A little more patience is required from all of us especially with the young players. Just because Owen and Rooney were world beaters at 18 doesn't mean all youngsers will be. BT was in his mid 20's before he found his feet. As poor as he has been to date even Lancashire migth turn out to be a decent centre back given time. Going back to Morgan, I'm intrigued to know what Pardew will do with him. In the Ajax game he had him playing in the hole behind the strikers when he came on, but it was clear that Morgans natural instinct was to drop back and sit rather than run beyond the striker. This could be an issue as we need an atacking midfielder to play alongside a defensive midfielder. If he is not going to tackle and fight then I'm not sure he can take that role. Chez Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 (edited) Sounds good to me. I have a sneaking feeling that Gillett may continue to improve and be a real asset too. Agreed. I'm not sure why I didn't mention him. Perhaps because he's slightly older and maybe even because I think we may have seen some of his best stuff already (energy, tackling, positioning). I hope not as he needs to improve his passing decision making and his first touch consistency. Again I hope he can improve in that area as well but even if he doesn't he will be very important to us this season. I'd much rather see him in the defensive midfield role than Wotton thats' for sure. Edited 27 July, 2009 by Chez
washsaint Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 I would much rather see Morgan in the defensive midfield role than Wotton. Wotton is appalling: can't tackle, can't pass, has no pace. Some of the best football (actually the bast football) of last season was when we had Gillett and SChneiderlin in midfield. As soon as Gillett got injured we were never the same and Morgan struggled: with form and fitness. Perhaps not surprisingly as he is just starting his career and with so many youngsters this was always, with hindsight, going to be the case.
sotonianproud Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 My son saw him and I think Jamie White with the physio at the swimming pool last week (Friday or Thursday), he asked and they were both working on regaining fitness after knocks.
NickG Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Came off the bench against Ajax I think. he did, and looked excellent - got stuck in, good tackles and attacking run
S-Clarke Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Morgan is probably one of our most technically gifted players - and to have a couple of ''technically'' gifted players in league 1 is rare. He didn't play too well last season because he had no idea what his role was - no one did. Under a good manager with the right shape and tactics around him he will be a star in a top half championship team - and because of his age he could easily make it in the premiership too. What the dutch did to these young players last season is a travesty - i hope AP can restore their confidence, although i fear it could take a while.
