3rd Ashes Test

It would be mystifying if we'd had a better spinner available. We didn't.

Plus, the King of Spain wasn't all that bad.

Darren Pattinson, yeah. Rumour at the time was that we picked him so that he couldn't play against us for Aus this summer. Wish he was!

Well I guess that's as good a reason as any for one of the more baffling selections in Test match history !

Giles wasn't that bad?!?!?!

Average of 40 with the ball in 54 tests taking 143 wickets, excuse me if I am wrong but that is shocking statistics.

The only time Giles ever looked like taking a wicket was when he bowled the ball into the rough, apart from that his wickets generally included the batsman getting out rather than him getting them out.

I always hate the argument that 'we didn't have a better a spinner', well if we didn't have a good enough spinner for test cricket don't have one in the side!!!

Keedy, Croft?

i cant believe they are still not going with Clarke (or are they?)

he's got a track record for taking wickets in this country, bowls well in the conditions. is ponting obsessed with the fact johnson is ranked 3rd in the world, and wont back down?

odd

Isn't Clark ranked pretty high anyway? I know it's very stupid especially as he was their leading wicket taker in the last Ashes, but means it good news for us. :)

You mean Clark, not Clarke, I assume?

Do they still name teams and have the toss at the same time even though there may be a delayed start?

Need to know for Fantasy cricket transfer reasons.

It's up to the team, they can name them from whenever, but it seems like both will be named at the toss.

I meant , will it be at 10.30ish , like it normally is. Or if rain delays until 4 oclock, can they delay naming the team until 3.30

I thought the toss had to be before the start of the game regardless of the weather which means the teams have already been announced.

I'm not 100% sure when the toss has to happen, but I know for certain if there is a delay you don't have to announce your team until play actually starts.

Well you certainly do have to name your team before the toss and obviously the toss is before the game and it follows that you name your team before the toss and the game.

Clear I hope ;)

From Cricinfo a few minures ago:

The rain is still falling at Edgbaston, so there has been no toss, nor any news of a time for the toss. Sorry folks, but that's the way it is. And the teams don't need to be confirmed until the toss. So that's why we haven't any official starting XIs yet.

Trying to make this seem sensible !

Start us definitely delayed, from Cric info:

http://www.cricinfo.com/engvaus2009/engine/current/match/345972.html

" buckets of rain have dumped themselves rudely over Edgbaston and poor Steve Rouse's head. The head groundsman and his team have been working through the night in their wellies and, unexpectedly, we're in for a bit of a delay."

Seems Watson will open and Johnson is going to play but as 1st change.

Ah well I'll take a chance Clark is not playing ( cannot believe why ) and go with:

AJ Strauss, JM Anderson,, SCJ Broad, PD Collingwood, A Flintoff, RT Ponting, MJ Clarke, BJ Haddin†, BW Hilfenhaus, SM Katich, P Siddle

Personally id drop Flintoff for this test, the weather is gunna be poor at best all weekend, the soft ground wont help his knee and id rather have a fresh Flintoff running in in the 4th test where we might get a win other than an almost certain draw. Play Harmy instead and give him a moral boost, and it will make Broad etc feel the pressure that Harmy is knocking on the door and make them perform better IF Harmy bowls well!

Probably no play till after tea, if not tomorrow. On the plus side, did anyone hear boycott vs hayden on TMS? I really thought they were going to come to blows!

Please explain for those of us who are working.

I dont understand why Pointing has elected to bat, its overcast so swing plus a damp pitch that could do almost anything and im sure they arnt going to fit in to many overs for today - if you are strauss im sure you wouldnt mind loosing the toss that much, though have to say i still dont fancy Flintoff Running in on that damp wicket

Brad Haddin out due to injury!

(Broke his finger during warm-up, Ponting didn't know and put him in the team and had to get special permission to change!)

good on us for allowing the change to happen, if we had followed the letter of the law we could have denied them the change. Good to see common sense prevailing

Better hope for rain - awful bowling bar Swann. Garbage in particular from Broad and Anderson, Broad is only getting in the side at the moment as his face fits with the England management, he wouldn't get in the Hampshire side and perhaps not even Nottinghamshire. Broad just isn't ready to face top level Test sides yet.
