hamster Posted 25 July, 2009 Posted 25 July, 2009 The Last Soldier has gone. Only a couple of weeks after we lost Henry Allingham we now have the sad news that Harry Patch has also passed away at the ripe old age of 111. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5hdV4Lh88_epPdkxnhuT_vPSo8arA I know that he didn't consider himself to be a hero, saving that accolade for the ones who didn't come home, but he was and always will be. Prayers be with you Harry, God bless. I will raise one to you later this evening.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 25 July, 2009 Posted 25 July, 2009 A very brave man indeed. We all owe that lost generation so much. RIP.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 26 July, 2009 Posted 26 July, 2009 R.I.P. and sincere thanks for your part in keeping us Free. As previously suggested, maybe Harry could have a State Funeral to commemorate all his brothers in arms. He was the last one and represents a generation whose values and commitment were second to none.

Agree but apparently there is still one left (that is commonly known of), Claude Choules, 108, living in Australia.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 26 July, 2009 Posted 26 July, 2009 Agree but apparently there is still one left (that is commonly known of), Claude Choules, 108, living in Australia. I think though that Claude was in the Navy, whereas Harry Patch was the last British veteran alive who fought in the trenches.

I did, of course, mean last British veteran. Which is why I was espousing the idea of a state funeral.
skintsaint Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article6728000.ece but I agree with you ESB, something should be done for the last Army veteran to have fought.
