Chez Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Murty's definitely worth a contract. We actually had 2 full backs out there today and what a difference it made. Not sure when that last happened. Don't think the Dutch revolution ever had any full backs! Are you sure? I think the 4-4-2 formation made a bigger difference than Murty himself. Having someone sat in front of the fullback doesn't half make his job a lot easier. James looked appauling last season in the 4-3-3 formation then in the secomd half of the season everyone started raving about him. I didn't see a major change or progression myself (although there was some) what I did see though was him no longer having to face 2 on 1 all the time as he had a right midfielder providing him with cover and protection. Funnily enough James with no cover in front of him against Ajax was murdered.
Greenridge Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Give him a chance. He had 6 to 9 months out with a serious injury at Reading, so hadn't kicked a ball in anger until he came to us. By all accounts, he put in a sterling performance on Saturday and I hope he is offered a contract. Perhaps you might read my post again in the context of the previous quote it was related to. I think Murty could potentially be a very good signing for us and if in doubt this was demonstrated on Saturday. He needs time to shed a few pounds but as long as he is 'professional' I have no doubt he'll do this and maybe that's what AP is waiting to see him achieve.

Otherwise, I doubt that he would have stayed at Reading for a decade and been their inspirational captain at the time that they achieved promotion to the top flight.

I'm sure you're dead right Wes, again I'll refer back to my original comment which related to a prior one from AP which seem to raise a question over Murty although it could be read / interpreted 100 different ways and was just my take on it. When some players get to the ends of their careers they don't have the hunger they may have had in an earlier period and some are ultimate professionals to the very end.....Let's hope Murty still 'wants it' as he could be very influential for us this year.

Fair comment. He certainly gave me the impression that he wanted it against Hearts. I can't see that Pardew could have failed to be impressed with his performance, making allowances for his weight and lack of match fitness. His commitment didn't seem to be in doubt.
david in sweden Posted 27 July, 2009 Posted 27 July, 2009 Has he signed yet..? if not, will he..any info..? seems to be dragging out a bit considering he has been with a couple of weeks.. seems (by some accounts) he had a fair game v. Hearts. At least knows how to centre a ball, but obviously out of training having gone without a proper pre-season. If he can get fit and lose half a stone then IMHO ..AP should sign him.
revolution saint Posted 29 July, 2009 Posted 29 July, 2009 I got the impression Murty would sign like a shot. At his age he's not going to get many championship clubs after him and they'd probably all be oop norf so we make sense for him. The fact he hasn't signed and we haven't announced offering him a contract (whereas we did Stern John) suggests: 1) AP just doesn't think he's up to it (in which case surely he'd be gone by now?) 2) AP thinks he can get a better right back (Isn't Danny Mills on a free?). 3) They're just haggling over a contract. My guess is probably it's either 2 or 3. If it's 3 then I think Murty will sign for us because i can't see him getting a club as convenient and attractive as us for him. As the season gets closer that will start to make him think. Incidentally that goes for all free agents at the moment - they can play teams off against each other for a while but sooner or later they'll have to commit or run the risk of being in the wilderness. Any decent free agent will be snapped up by this time next week and maybe that's what Pardew is working on.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 Still no news then? Given his display vs Hearts, I thought we'd be signing him up like a shot!
the saint in winchester Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 I think Revolution's comments above are appropos, but I'll add another option. 4) If you can lose (half) a stone, I'll offer you a contract. FWIW, I'd sign him now before someone else does.
Clifford Nelson Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 Still no news then? Given his display vs Hearts' date=' I thought we'd be signing him up like a shot![/quote'] I thought he was good against Hearts as well, but it's not everybody's view. Rubbish first half and redeemed himself a bit in the second has been mentioned more than once. If we are to play Lallana on the right wing, then we need an energetic RB and CM to cover for him when he goes walkabouts. A price to pay for his creative talent in my view, not everyone agrees. Is Murty going to be that energetic?
Chez Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 1) AP just doesn't think he's up to it (in which case surely he'd be gone by now?) 2) AP thinks he can get a better right back (Isn't Danny Mills on a free?). 3) They're just haggling over a contract. or perhaps 4) he is choosing to assess him over a longer period of time to make sure he makes the right decision.
smithy Posted 3 August, 2009 Posted 3 August, 2009 The Sun reported today that Murty has been offered a contract.
