It is well known that our present team lacks confidence. This is only natural because we have only won a handful of games over the last year. This is one of the first things that AP quickly noticed hence the comment "We have got to get back to a winning mentality".

As importantly, I think a run of good results will change the way the fans support the club. The atmosphere at games has been definitely lacklustre to say the least and I suggest it is largely because many have expected the team to lose.

I know its obvious to say that good results will bring back the numbers, but I also think that confidence in our team will make the support more animated and produce a better atmosphere which will be worth a few extra points ala The Dell.

fans are fickle

Fans want instant succes there is some poster from Bournemouth on another thread complaining that Pardew is too slow in sorting out the team.

Pardew has been here how long four days perhaps?

What is the point of being ambitious if there is little substance behind the ambition.

Every supporter want their team to succeed but most realise it wont happen on a regular basis

I think the club's recent history has a lot to do with both fans and team being low in confidence, but luckily for us, as the two go hand in hand, then a few home wins will change that mentality for both.

Thinking back to our relegation season, then I can remember several occasions where misplaced passes and goals given away would result in the crowd getting on the team's back.

I think with a new owner at the club and all politics removed from the equation, all we really need to worry about is getting behind the team, and the team in turn will respond to that support.

The only downside is that since Lynam and Michael Mitty dragged the takeover to new extremes of tedium for no apparent reason, Alan Pardew has had to hit the ground running and it will take a few games for our new team to gel.

I had a dream last night that we lost 8-1 away to Swansea on the first day of the season. I don't know why we were playing Swansea, but we were.

I scored our goal. Remember? - the stripey elephant wearing the monocle and the top hat?

I think it is pretty unambitious to hope we "just survive" this season

Who said that

I thought the plan was to see how we were doing at Xmas and go on from there.

With a new team and points deduction it is not going to be easy to forecast how we will do

No you didn't, Matt Paterson scored a header to open the scoring. Then we conceded 8.

it has been said time and time again on here over the last week/2 weeks..

i just think, we as fans (well on here) are pretty unambitious..

1. wanting to just survive in league 1

2. wanting tisdale to be manager

3. thinking burley dd a good job

4. happy with player like jasmine

5. we are nothing but a small provincial club

6. we found our level (in the CCC)

i mean, what a load of crud

the list is endless really

of course you have to add a dose of reality in that...

reality is, we are one of (with leeds) the big two/3 in this league bya long long way

we are financially very secure

we could attract (and have) far far better than a tisdale

league 1 is utter shyt and wanting to survive this season takes the **** really

etc etc you get my point

I dont disagree with what you are saying

but as no one from the club has said what there plans are the only thing I have picked up is the Pardew hopes to be mid table by Xmas which would be pretty good considering our current situation

Not “complaining” more expressing my anxieties!

I as a fan of SFC would have hoped that we would be more advanced in our preparations than we are. I realise that AP has only been in charge 1 week, but ML took over 3 weeks ago and in that time we have appointed a manager and bought one player…..this is not enough to ease my worries!

Clearly Pinnacle have also cost us valuable time and for that I am ****ed off

I agree with that tdd.

It's a bit like a boxer going into the ring expecting to get beat and having the sh*t knocked out of him. Lost the fight before he got into the ring.

The mind set has got to change with the players and the fans.

There are so many fans with different ambitions some are high some are not.

Mine are low after four years of utter dross a few wins will do at the moment

I think you are confusing 'ambition' with 'expectation' - surely your ambition is for us to win the league? not "just win a few games" please god surely?

Yes a use of words can you have an ambition which you cannot control

I would like to see Southampton FC in CCC but it is not an ambition

Pardew however may have an ambition to see Southampton FC in the CCC

Yeah I had a similar dream, but 5 nil to Stoke :(

IMO yes player confidence is an issue, but a lot of them were simply not good enough for CCC. I think over the coming weeks we will see the confidence grow, but that's not to say all of them are good enough for L1 in the first place...

it was quite cringe worthy when some were saying we had the best academy in the land...when this has probably never been the case in the last 15 years

I think it was a well respected Academy and has a good record with producing players and winning matches.

But you are right people put spin on it and the next thing we are the best in the land but Probably the best on the South Coast

My ambition is to see Saints play in the Champions league (if not win it) my expectations.........thats a different story and is based on many many factors. eg Manager, League position, squad, -10 points etc etc.

I'm sure our academy has been in the top 5 in the country for a few years. We could compete with Arsenal who run their academy like a finishing school for European players and we're definitely behind Manchester Utd and Middlesbrough in terms of pure numbers of quality players. That said, we have a large number of our graduates in the top 2 divisions in English football and a few in decent leagues abroad. The academy has generated significantly more money than it has cost which is part of the purpose of having it in the first place.

That is a cheap comment I thought Dyer Surmamn and McGoldrick were Academy players

The England U21 which lost in the final had two Southampton Academy players

the academy was good for a while..but to put it up there as one of the best in the country in terms of return on players that make it...nah

I agree with you it is not the best but when we were in the Premiership it was pretty good.

Fans feed off the pitch first, trouble is too many lack lustre displays for too many years have torn the heart out the crowd.

It'll take some time to reinstall before we get back to the sort of atmosphere we saw at the Norwich game 2005
