saintalan Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 You hear the word 'mathematically' a lot at the end of the season BUT... after winning our first 5 games and all other games ending in draws we could be mathematically top on goal difference... top two finish, no problem!

Statistically what are the odds of this happening?
Glasgow_Saint Posted 24 July, 2009 Author Posted 24 July, 2009 Statistically what are the odds of this happening? 0% unless we buy some decent players
Glasgow_Saint Posted 28 July, 2009 Author Posted 28 July, 2009 You do seem to be a little impatient I suggest that you relax and let Alan Pardew deliver the goods. You getting restless yet?
Petersfield Saint Posted 28 July, 2009 Posted 28 July, 2009 I admire him for his right mental attitude. None of this spending of several millions and hoping to perhaps reach the play-offs that was Burley's trademark. I always believe that unless you set out to win, you will fail. +5000; this was my biggest beef with Burley and set alarm bells ringing in my mind probably even before the likes of Alpine etc.
Saintjersey Posted 28 July, 2009 Posted 28 July, 2009 I must admit I am starting to get restless, would really like a signing today to ease my nerves a bit.
John B Posted 28 July, 2009 Posted 28 July, 2009 You getting restless yet? No not really something will happen soon
Channon's Sideburns Posted 28 July, 2009 Posted 28 July, 2009 I admire him for his right mental attitude. None of this spending of several millions and hoping to perhaps reach the play-offs that was Burley's trademark. I always believe that unless you set out to win, you will fail. Exactly - and look how we were slaughtered on here for slating Burley when he said that. The man set up for mediocrity...and found it. T@sser of the highest quality. With the resources at his disposal automatic promotion should have been the aim..telling the players that we were 'aiming for the playoffs' was downright stupid. ARGGGGHHHHHHH
Glasgow_Saint Posted 28 July, 2009 Author Posted 28 July, 2009 (edited) No not really something will happen soon When will you be nervous? tomorrow, Friday, next week? Hope AP has a big, exciting signing up his sleeve or a number of people will soon start to get very nervous imo. looks likely we will lose players - not sign them! The9 Posted 29 July, 2009 Posted 29 July, 2009 The ambitious amongst us will not be too impressed. Those content with survival won’t care either way. Those "content with survival" might think we need 10 new players to stay up. I also don't think rumours or speculation are much of a guide, nobody saw the Harding transfer coming.

Thats the thing, since we've been taken over their have been very few if any leaks to the press or so called people in the know about transfers etc on here with genuine info. Its almost as if they've worked out the people leaking info.

Its almost as if they've worked out the people leaking info. It’s more likely that there is no info to leak? In all honesty the ‘ITKs’ on here have a generally poor record. Most work on the laws of averages and claim to be ITK about most rumours – some pan out, most don’t.
Wes Tender Posted 29 July, 2009 Posted 29 July, 2009 How are the nerves today?? No signing and no transfer gossip either. I thought that John had agreed to stay and signed a contract for another year. Doesn't that count? As for the transfer gossip, there is a lot about Rasiak going to Swansea or Reading which until substantiated might just be agents' talk. Could it be that in the same way that things were kept very close to his chest in the case of ML's takeover, we are quietly beavering away with a series of signings and will only announce them when the deal is done? Contrast this with all the hoohah associated with the Skates, but that is possibly to keep the fans and the bank onside, pacifying them while syphoning off funds from the sale of big name players into Gaydamak's back pocket.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 29 July, 2009 Author Posted 29 July, 2009 I thought that John had agreed to stay and signed a contract for another year. Doesn't that count? Doesnt count as hasnt happened.
Wes Tender Posted 29 July, 2009 Posted 29 July, 2009 Doesnt count as hasnt happened. Perhaps the Nottingham Evening Post has it wrong then. But why would they have published that if there was no foundation for it, especially as he was a former player for them?
Cabrone Posted 29 July, 2009 Posted 29 July, 2009 Statistically what are the odds of this happening? About the same as hearing a Rupert Lowe apology.....

Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 Just seen on SSN that Norwich have completed the clubs 8th and 9th signings this summer - we have lost 9 so not feeling so hopeful about the top 2 right now.
Big Bad Bob Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 Just seen on SSN that Norwich have completed the clubs 8th and 9th signings this summer - we have lost 9 so not feeling so hopeful about the top 2 right now. FFS, go and support them then. And before you ask, I don't know WHY AP said a top 2 finish. Maybe he wanted to big us up for some reason. Maybe he wanted to give the fans some hope for the new season, who knows?

Big Bad Bob Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 we are all frustrated by the lack of activity, but lets not take it out on each other please Bob No, you're the only one frustrated by the lack of activity. We're all frustrated by you telling us how frustrated you are!!
Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 No, you're the only one frustrated by the lack of activity. You speak for all Saints fans do you? Strange that as I know for a fact that a number of Saints fans are very worried about the lack of squad additions.

Lets get it right for once
Big Bad Bob Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 (edited) You speak for all Saints fans do you? Strange that as I know for a fact that a number of Saints fans are very worried about the lack of squad additions. You see, you're still living in PL/CCC land where every fart by a player was documented/leaked to a paper. We're in L1 remember, the media couldn't give two ****s about us and who we're chasing (unless it was Kaka of course). Think of the AP appointment, that was a curve ball no-one was expecting wasn't it. The only rumours people heard were those based on what was on the betting websites. It seems that the new team know how to keep their mouths shut. Signings will happen, probably not as quick as you'd like, but they will happen. And I say this now so that you don't get depressed during the season, we will be very lucky if we finish anywhere near the promotion places. That is the reality I have prepared myself for. Mid table finish for me, anything above is a bonus, anything below will be a disappointment! Oh, and I agree with IOWSaint Edited 30 July, 2009 by Big Bad Bob adding my agreement with the post above this

Lets get it right for once You maybe right, but on paper some of the signings look very good - Matthew Gill signed from Exeter, comes with good references. Owain Tudur-Jones from Swansea spent last season on loan with Swindon and they were very keen to buy him. Then you have proven quality with Simon Whaley, Holt and Stephen Hughes Add these to players like Stefanovic, Otsemobor and Cureton already at the club and I think they will be contenders this year?
Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 No, you're the only one frustrated by the lack of activity. Just me and BARCELONASAINT Have to admitt i'm i am now seriously worried for the forthcoming season. We start on -10 points with a squad wholley inadequate as it currently stands. We play QPR on Saturday which would have been the last chance for any new players to get a chance to gel! The earlier optimism i had for this season is fast receeding. Don't get me wrong i'm happy to still have a team to support but typically Saints i think our hopes were all raised when this new owner came in.
Iowsaintsfan Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 You maybe right, but on paper some of the signings look very good - Matthew Gill signed from Exeter, comes with good references. Then you have proven quality with Simon Whaley, Holt and Stephen Hughes Add these to players like Stefanovic, Otsemobor and Cureton already at the club and I think they will be contenders this year? Yes on paper they look good, they still have to gel as a team which can take time, they were good in their comfort zones how will they fair going to a new club with a bit of a reputation and expected to perform from the off? you also have to remember we still have good players on the books whatever their futures maybe Rasiak, Saga, Davis and a couple of the right additions could be all it needs? Lets be patient for a bit longer, though having said that id still like to see a couple of signings before the Millwall game

I think Norwich's major problem this season will be their manager Bryan Gunn.
JustMike Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 You speak for all Saints fans do you? Strange that as I know for a fact that a number of Saints fans are very worried about the lack of squad additions. yes but not all have gotten the razor blades out just yet. I think the signings will come like buses..none for a while then 2 or 3 at once. Even if we had bought in other players in AP's first week, that still wouldnt have given them enough time to gel by the millwall game. I think the strategy is looking beyond 8th august, mainly due the time wasted by Fry / Pinnacle, something which AP nor us can do anything about

WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 With no strikers capable of 20 + goals if Rasiak & Saga leave as expected we will finish in the bottom 2 with our current squad!!!? Yes no doubt AP is working hard to bring players in but I am alarmed that none have arrived and even more alarmed that he hasn't sorted his backroom staff out yet.I really did think we'd have a couple of new players in before the QPR game.Every day that goes past with no movement gets me more worried. We need the right new additions fast I hope in a weeks time things are looking a lot better with at least 2/3 additions and his backroom staff sorted then as long as we have couple of decent strikers the play offs would definately be possible.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 agree with your summary above regarding positions. Be interesting to see who we get. Wasnt Holland linked the other day? Not seen any link in the press, but seen one or two on here mention a link to Matt H. Not been much by way of 'links' full stop but as someone pointed out earlier we are in L1 now so not much press about us/L1. Few mentions about Bent on 606 but other than that not seen anything.

Teams have done well building in January transfer window. Not convinced the squads will all be really strong elsewhere. GK - Sorted RB - James (Murty possibly) Murty is keen so AP has than one in the bag unless he feels he can get even better, so RB ok. LB - Harding, Mills, Molyneux, - enough for this league. CB - Perry (Can he play every week? - agree could do with one more CB CB - Thomas plenty good enough for league 1 RM - Sorted (Lallana, Thomson and McLaggon) LM - Mills and Holmes (Holmes stays fit then sorted) if not cover or better needed plus likes of RM, Gobbern, Lallana etc if stuffed for injuries MF - Schneiderlin think Scneiderlin/Gillet could be v good this year but we could do with an experienced playmaker to take pressure off them. MF - Gillet ST - Patterson impressed me a lot against Hearts ST - White - agree need at least one if all others leave.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 July, 2009 Author Posted 30 July, 2009 (edited) We are in League 1 do other teams have large squads? succesful ones I presumme. can play over 50 games a season when in L1 (that would include a half decent cup run(s)) dont think we need a large squad, just some cover and a decent enough 1st 11 Edited 30 July, 2009 by Glasgow_Saint
NickG Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 We are in League 1 do other teams have large squads? exactly, if you replace John with Rasiak (I know he may well be going) then bet most teams in league 1 (including those near top) would be happy with that 11. And Holmes/Schneiderlin may even be fit for a few games! KD Murty Thomas Perry Harding Mills Gillett Wooton Lallana Paterson Rasiak ones in bold would, I'm guessing, get into just about any league 1 side? The others probably would get into most? We failed last year due to lack of confidence, direction, organisation, no experienced fullbacks or CB's for most of season, no Rasiak/John, manager, off field atmosphere etc. We did have some decent players.

Perry 36 now - play in all games, i doubt it Harding unknown (mixed reports from Hearts game) Mills ready? Gillett Wooton Past it now imo Lallana inconsistant Paterson unproven Rasiak leaving/wants out ones in bold would, I'm guessing, get into just about any league 1 side? Andy Durman Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 KD Murty Thomas Perry Harding Mills Gillett Wooton Lallana Paterson Rasiak This is actually not a bad side for league 1. One or two more signings and a few premier loans and I'm happy. Would love us to get a 35 year old Jimmy Case to marshall the team and perhaps a Rod Wallace up front with Rasiak
NickG Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 as said Murty is ours if we want him. agree one more CB as cover. Harding - didn't realise mixed reports thought he did pretty well Mills/Holmes -yes ready and think will do well this year. Wooton - agree -as said above main position to strengthen bet fans at over clubs wouldn't be than critical if they thought they could sign any of these players you are writing off.

lordswoodsaints Posted 30 July, 2009 Posted 30 July, 2009 As I said previously, pardew needs to be realistic otherwise it will bite his arse come may he is also likely to be ripped apart on here and in the local media. We all want things that we know we can't possibly achieve but If pardew thinks that this can happen in our current form then he must be dillusional,it will need a minor miracle just to tread water IMO. It is very silly and unusual thing to come out and say unless of course he has a plan that involves getting in a few players. IMO we are in a worse state than we were last season with regards to players and we are also in a worse league which is an unknown quantity to us. If we have a bad august then not only will the natives get restless but we could find ourselves playing catch up,20 points adrift.

Spot on, this squad + 10 points deduction = relegation. We cannot afford a poor start to this season but that is precisely what is going to happen. Saga ans Rasiak will leave on the eve of the season and without decent replacements ALREADY here we WILL struggle, make no bones about it.
