Baird back as CB

Baird was a solid PL player who played in the F.A cup final. He was then one of our best players for a few seasons in the championship. He can play CB, DM, RM and RB which IMO was his strongest position. He would be an unbelievable signing, the only problem would be whether he can get on with Davis.

To be fair he was a PL player with one starting appearance (and 70mins as sub) when he played in the FA Cup Final, that's not a success in its own right, and we lost anyway.

Then he had about 2 seasons of being sent off on loan for clubs in lower leagues before even getting near the Saints team because he was poor when he got a game, and we were at a much higher level at the time.

Gradually, under Burley, he improved, first at right back, (he stopped chipping the bloody ball up the right wing to the opposition left midfielder every time for a start) and then he moved inside where he was an unqualified success at CB - which is when we sold him after ONE successful season, rather than "a few". Which is not to say he wouldn't be a great signing, I just think you're going a bit OTT with his achievements at Saints.

Unless there are tensions I haven't heard about, I also doubt there's any problem between him and Davis, people argue about decision-making on the pitch all the time, they just don't always get so carried away with it as they did that one time.

Someone comes on here and starts an unsubstatiated rumour about a former player, and a heated debate begins.

Baird will never ever ever come back. Everyone who has argued on this thread is an idiot. But especially delldays, who seems to out-idiot everyone consistently)

If I had a full account, I would just start a thread called 'Wayne Bridge says he is coming back' or maybe Barry Venison or Walcott, and I am sure it would get the same ludicrous response from you lot.

If he loved us that much why did he leave?

I suspect his love of money outweighs his love of saints.

If it was a case of lobbin a bit of man glue over ones thumb, I would rather stick a bunch of £50 notes together than a glossy saints programme.

putting it up in red for what reason? Not sure Walcott would come back yet though, although he might like too

i saw that phil Ifil had been released from Colchester. Wasn't he on loan with us and I think everyone thought he was the business? Wouldn't he be a better option at RB?

I mentioned this a while back, he'd be a good signing based on what he did with us in a few games, though I do wonder what's going on there...

Completely agree nickh. What's the point of a fresh start if we're going to bring back all those who played a part in where we ended up. In playing a part I consider players who left us in the lerch when the odds were down shouldn't ever be reconsidered.

Given that most of Baird's "part in where we ended up" was to get us into the Play-Offs in 2007 after having the season of his life when he was Player of the Season, and we got over £3m for him when he left, I can't say I hold it against him.

And seeing as the relegation squad from 2005 would probably get us out of League One at the first opportunity NOW, even considering the retirements of Niemi, Svensson, Lundekvam, Le Saux, Bernard (I hope), Telfer and Redknapp, I think it's a pretty stupid statement to wash your hands of the past entirely.

Hell, even Mikael Nilsson would look like a pretty good player 2 leagues down, and some combination of Crouch/Beattie and Phillips we'd kill for. But ooh, they played a part in our relegation, we can't have that...

Interesting Quote on BBC Site

From Simon, Fulham, via text: "Slightly concerned to see John Pantsil line up at right back, Baird has been heroic this year despite his clear limitations and faults, can't help but feel the rustiness of Pantsil may cost us."

Sums up Baird for me

Maybe he's down in Southampton today to sign a 4 year deal with his first club? :)

And yet Hodgson was bemoaning losing him for the Semi Final. Seems he has come into the team built on an intelligent work ethic and done well.

Hope they can get a result, now THAT would be a plucky fairy tale Cup Final achievement everyone could get behind, unlike the other one with the cheats down the road

Shocked and stunned that you say that........he became an international playing at right back....what games have you been watching!!!

No, no... he was ****ing awful... no pace and always stood off. He wasn't as bad as Cranie at RB, but he was bad!

Chris spoke the other day of his love of Saints and unfinished business.....I wonder?

Thanks for raising this, it crossed my mind as well ....

I'd be a YES. Can play at both CB and RB. Problem is that Fulham are playing him now, so would he drop 2 divisions??

And to answer the question above : he left because we were offered 3mil for him, so Rupee did the deal in a flash.

So YES, Chris Baird, please come back home.

To be fair it wasn't Lowe that sold him. He was sold during the period when he wasn't here, but to be honest it was such as mess back then I can't remember who was running the club. Crouch maybe or Duleiu? or one of that lot.

loved us that much he went first shout he had...nice one

And you would have stayed with a chance of playing Prem footy and a huge salary increase? What about Walcott, Bale, Mills etc?

It took him ages to get into the team. He was one of our best players at Cardiff but struggled to get 1st team footy the season after.

A golden opportunity to futher his career comes up and he should say no?

Crap at RB, decent at CB.

He will go wherever his mrs tells him has the best shopping centre

Was not that good at CB, read play very well but who always had his hand up as the ball was lumped forward. Saw it so many times I could only assume he ****ed himself when a long ball came over the top.

He has only ever been decent in one position, defensive midfield , something we desperately need. He was absolutely abysmal for Fulham at RB, leading to months in the reserves.
