Scummer Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Missing the rest of the Ashes series. Guess that means he won't be playing for Hampshire at all this year then.

Smirking_Saint Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Has been struggling obviously in the first two tests. We have really done well without him (as much as his silly shots have gone) though i would believe it could be a mental blow to us and a huge lift for the aussies. IMO anyways
JustMike Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 sh!t thats not good. I hope they bring Bell in instead of Shah, his constant cramp is too much a worry

skintsaint Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 done well considering he was injured maybe, but if the injury is affecting his performance then why is he playing. well hes not now anyway.
Appy Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Stephen Moore in i hope. After his performance in the lions game.
JustMike Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Stephen Moore in i hope. After his performance in the lions game. not a bad idea but the selectors have their pecking order and bell and shah are top. Its a shame Trescothick doesnt come out of international retirement just for the last 3 tests
Crab Lungs Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Tresco (if at all possible), Stephen Moore... Hasn't Horton got an excellent record at Lancs? Trott at Warks? Luke Wright, I like the idea, though I fear we'll plump for an underperforming Bell or Shah.
fish fingers Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Not Ian Bell, no way. Robert Key should play the next test.
JustMike Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Not Wright for me. Whilst we are throwing names about what about Michael Carberry, been in good touch of late. Very good in the field too
Hatch Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 It goes to show that we are quite weak, We are not arguing the strengths of potential replacements but instead finding faults with everyone. There is no one outstanding replacement.
Crab Lungs Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Woah!!!! Carberry.. he's right under our nose and I missed it too! People keep saying 'its not a time to experiment' but **** that, this is exactly the problem in the first place. The selectors never deviate from their chosen pool. How do we know if anyone can do any better if we only select from the same 14-15 players all the time? Regardless, it's gonna be Bell, whatever we say. Shah and Key will probably be sniffing around, so we'll have 3 players who haven't cracked it at Test level on our shortlist, whilst the likes of prospects like Denly, Moore and Carberry etc miss out. Again. Someone on BBC suggested bringing Ramprakash back by saying 'if you're good enough, it doesn't matter how old you are' Whilst I agree with the point, hasn't Ramprakash got a poor Test record? Granted, he's been continously prolific at County level, but for Test? That would be interesting though. Can't stop thinking.... Come on Tresco, just one last hurrah.... bungle Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 To be fair, Carberry has been on England A tours in the past, and I can remember Sky commentators raving about his ability, but saying he hasn't yet put it together. So far this seems to be his best season for Hants, so perhaps he can get back into England contention. Won't be this summer, though.
the stain Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 I agree with all of that Mr Lungs. One of Moore, Carberry or Dinlo. The 'not time to experiment' dictum falls on its anus if the other option is to bring in a man who has comprehensively failed over an extended show of faith. Basically, please not Bell. But if it has to be Bell (and we all know it will be), shift Colly up to 4 to add some confidence if Bopara's nerves get the better of him again, and get Bell in nearer the middle of the order. That way there's no pressure on him and that's also where he's experienced what limited success he's had playing for England.
Eastcowzer Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Missing the rest of the Ashes series. Guess that means he won't be playing for Hampshire at all this year then. Only played once last season. I think ! No doubt Radio Solent will stil bel claiming hin as Hampshire's Kevin Pietersen. Graeme Smith seems to be a pretty shrewd judge. NI76 Posted 22 July, 2009 Share Posted 22 July, 2009 Got to be Bell for me, some of the comments on here are unreal. Luke Wright ffs, he's scored ONE first class century in his whole career and that was last week against us. Bell has a test average of 40+ and is one of the in-form batsmen in county cricket. Still, many on here didn't think Flintoff should walk back into the team.

JustMike Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 the good thing with Bell is that he is an excellent fielder at silly point or short leg, he stays low and watches the ball into his hands whereas Cook for example stands too quickly and shys away, which to be fair most of us would do being that close but Bell has a knack for it. He is more that capable with the bat but the aussies have worked him out, especially if Lee is bowling

Still, many on here didn't think Flintoff should walk back into the team. I'll hold my hands up as one of the people who questioned Flintoff going straight back into the team. But that was mainly with an eye on his long-term fitness. His retirement announcement puts a different light on that. If he wants to play so hard he ruins his future test career, well that no longer matters. As for Bell, he's got a decent average still. But with the notable exception of vs SA at Lords last year, he's been poor for a couple of years. Put anywhere above number 5 and he gets that nervous, trapped in the headlights look about him. As I said above, if they want to bring him in that far down the order it might just work, but he's still a man with a history of cracking under pressure. If the Lions really is a credible springboard to the first XI then either Denly or Moore ought to get a shot. Agree about Wright though, he's a limited overs man. JustMike Posted 24 July, 2009 Share Posted 24 July, 2009 another good innings from Carberry yesterday, maybe the ashes is too soon for him but if he carries on with this form he will surely be in contention for the next series

Crab Lungs Posted 25 July, 2009 Share Posted 25 July, 2009 another good innings from Carberry yesterday, maybe the ashes is too soon for him but if he carries on with this form he will surely be in contention for the next series Let's face it, Bell is a never will be, Carberry is a quite possibly. Why don't we give an unproven yet hungry player a chance at this level instead of letting them knock around in what is effectively our 'B' team for a few years until they go stale (or ripe enough for the first squad, according to the selectors.) Big case in point is probably Dimi... I think the selectors certainly missed his prime by about 2 years or so... Still, he's there or thereabouts now, but England fudged around for along time with crap like Solanki etc instead of picking players on their performance. Y'know, I never understand all this 'developmental squad' crap... just more positions for ECB overlords to justify theirs and their mates jobs. Crab Lungs Posted 25 July, 2009 Share Posted 25 July, 2009 "Ian Bell still owes me a day of my life back for batting like a woman in Chester-le-Sreet a couple of years ago. He is the slowest run maker I have ever seen." From 606 Boards.. LOL, this is so true. Always felt that about Ian Bell, soooooooo frustratingly slow.
