SaintRobbie Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Yes I quite agree with what Pardew is saying but I do not think at the moment we will get to the play off this season Absolutely. We're actually sitting at minus 10 points with a League 2 standard team. Methinks relegation - as we currently stand - is a dead cert. That said. add the AP factor AND more importantly half a dozen experienced players and we stand a chance.

Charlie Wayman Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 I thought I admired his ambition for us to be "somewhere near the middle" by Xmas. But we actually need to do even better than this if we're to make the play-offs this season. We're scheduled to play 22 league games before 25th December. Looking at last season's table, mid-table is a return of 1.3 points per game. For Saints to get to 29 points by Xmas, we need - of course - to win 39 points on the pitch, which would imply us winning 1.77 points a game. If we kept that up over the season, we'd finish on 71 or 72 points (81 or 82 points minus 10). Last season, the last play-off place went to S****hope on 76 points. The season before, the sixth place team also got 76 points. And the year before that, it was 75 points. So we need to be averaging 1.87 (for a total of 85 or 86 points "on the pitch") points a game to scrape into the play-offs. Not impossible, but not easy. We essentially need to show automatic promotion form to win a play-off slot...and even if we get a play-off slot, we are odds against to go up. I reckon it's two seasons to get out of this division. Who was the famous German General who proclaimed that all Plans were made obsolete by the first shot of battle.. ? Nothing matters but the first 20 mins against Millwall in two weeks time. Until the strength of the opposition is known everything else is huff-and-puff. If we go one down to them, we will know that we will be in for a very long season of nail-biting tension and a battle against relegation.
Wes Tender Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 you say AP factor, but you obviously don't rate him if you think a team as below(or similar) organised and managed by him will be certs to go down KD - best keeper in division Murty/James Thomas Perry Harding Mills/Holmes Gillet Schneiderling/Wooton Lallana/Thomson/Gobbern John Paterson Clearly needs strengthening particularly CB/CM but you must think AP is crap if you think that team is dead cert for relegation from league 1. That is perhaps a team that might develop given a chance, but it is extremely weak in several areas. For a start, we have an ancient defence where you sweat on the continued fitness of three of them. James did OK as RB, but is more naturally a midfielder. In the midfield, scrap Holmes as being injury prone, Wotton as being useless, Gobbern not having shown much so far, ditto Thomson. Mills seems OK for potential, Schneiderlin and Gillett might be OK, but Lallana blows hot and cold. Up front, It's possible that John/Paterson could develop a decent partnership, but not proven. In short, it's a weak team in many areas and the cover for these players is not encouraging should any suffer injuries.

I am a positive realist - the team is not good enough at the moment Mr Pardew agrees too http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4507949.Squad_long_way_from_being_ready_for_Millwall__says_Pardew/ When we have a decent squad I will be a lot happier

Cripes, the Itchen bridge would be severely tested, if we all thought that we are going to be relegated again....
