Saint_clark Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Looking very good this pre-season IMO, if it were up to me i'd play him up front with John and Rasiak rotating. I thought he looked useful last season but some people seemed to just focus on the red card he got for a high foot.

I put score a load of goals. DMG got stick and he scored quite a few in a very poor side.Paterson is younger and will not score as many, in fact if he plays a lot of games there is no way we will make the play offs.Not because i dont think he wil become a useful player but he will be against a lot of big centre halfs who wont give him an inch.He is not Shearer and so needs to find the extra needed.

Agreed he is very good in the air and seems to be improving his finishing. IMO Nile Ranger always looked the better prospect when I saw them play together. Interesting that Ranger recently scored for Newcastle in a pre-season game.

Happy to give him a chance but i don't see him making it.He is 19 FFS, Lallana is 21 but people make a lot more allowances for him. Give him time and Paterson will develop into a first team player.

He was played on RM in that game due to us playing 4-5-1, annoyingly.

saints-til-i-die Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 MCG may have scored a few goals last year, but how many chances did he fluff. Remember early in the season when we were playing good football and creating chances but could not finish them?? One of those who could not finish them was MCG. Surely if a striker scores 15goals for example but has an average of 3 or 4 excellent chances per game, that's not a very good rate. Is it?
S-Clarke Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Patterson would be great as an option to bring on to replace stern. I wouldn't start him with stern....I'm not sure that would work, but I'd like to see him alongside a pacey player who'll open up more space.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 I see no reason why Matt Patterson can't replicate something like the goal tally DMG reached last season as he looks like a good prospect to me , although I'd expect to see a more established striker brought in to the squad . As it stands the club only has 4 recognised strikers if as reported Saga & Rasiak do indeed leave and Stern John signs - and with 3 of those unproven to a large degree the need for further reinforcement is quite clear : Matt Patterson Stern John Jamie White Kayne McLaggon + Adam Lallana . (more of a midfielder really IMO)

Then when it came to competitive opposition, they disappeared into obscurity. I'm not saying Paterson will do the same, but I wouldn't rely on him doing the business yet. Even if Rasiak, Saga and John all stayed, I'd still want another decent striker up front.

I never mentioned sending him out on loan to a league one team - think he should play 3-6 months in league two and then we'll see if he can actually do the business. As we've got a bit of money now we dont need to rely on the unproven youngsters, and Patterson is definately that!

(Another piece of Burley brilliance!) I do agree with you that we need another striker coming in even IF (and a very big IF at that) everyone stays (which I'm sure they won't). Patterson (and White for that matter) need to be brought through slowly and steadily.

eelpie Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 (edited) I think it will be interesting to see how Stern plays alongside our youngsters. He is tough. He holds the ball up well, distributes well, but doesn't have the speed that the younger players have. John could need young legs around him, and youngsters that can put the ball in the net like Paterson could benefit. They could both feed off each other - if they get the service from midfield. That is where Lallana will be important.. I can see a role for Stern. I can't see a role for Rasiak. Edited 23 July, 2009 by eelpie
