Spades Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Bit random but i was thinking today... if Matty was stil playing today, and was on the top of his form, peak condition etc... how much do you think he would be worth in the current market? Bearing in mind we have Ronaldo going for £80m and Kaka at £54m where would Matty be?
OfnPanad Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 The season he scored 29 in the league? £50m...if anyone other than Venables had been in the hotseat the England team would've been built around Matt *sigh* what might have been...
St Landrew Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 To us he will always remain priceless. In the open market his sublime skills would be overshadowed by lesser skilled by far, but greater ambitious players, just like they were when he was playing. Ambition gets you a long way if you want to be recognised. If you want to be loved in football, then loyalty goes the furthest. Add that quality to the fact that the man was a total and utter genius with a football at his feet, and you have the perfect combination for Saints fans. For everybody else I'd say £40M. Priceless with no MacDonalds gut and good training regime.
gawbeen Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 matt and peak condition never really go hand in hand but he had more skill in his baby toe than 95% of the players in his day. if ronaldo was 80M then le god would have been at least 35M but i would never had sold him for that. true legend
L1Minus10 Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Bayern Munich allegedly want £50m for Franck Ribery... who plays wide right ish attacking central midfield. D'you think he's better than Matt at his peak.. cos I don't.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Surely would be looking at £25 million plus, considering the likes of Tevez, Santa Cruz and Adebayor are selling for so much having relatively speaking not actually done that much in their careers.
hypochondriac Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Surely would be looking at £25 million plus' date=' considering the likes of Tevez, Santa Cruz and Adebayor are selling for so much having relatively speaking not actually done that much in their careers.[/quote'] He is miles miles better than all three of those. When you consider that is how much those three are going for, you have to say he would fetch a far higher price. If he was properly fit and had played for the mancs or similar he would be worth over 50 mill now easy.
John B Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 If Crouch is worth £12 m then MLT must be £40m plus If Zamora is worth £5 mill MLT must be worth £100m
CB Saint Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 When you say peak condition, do you mean peak condition a la MLT or peak condition for current prem players. It will make a huge difference
St.Jeweller Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Doesn't matter really because we all know he'd never leave the Saints!
Bailey Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 If Ronaldo is worth £80m then Le Tiss would be worth at least £50m.
Huffton Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 £1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 hth
paulwantsapint Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Wouldnt matter how much MLT always said Saints in top flight meant no reason to leave had MLT still been playin Saints would have been mid table prem
farawaysaint Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Doesn't matter really because we all know he'd never leave the Saints! Apart from the little almost Tottenham blip
wild-saint Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 hes better than ronaldo Matt was a great player but personally I dont ageee that he is better than Ronaldo. Like him or not he is a special player and overall he is a btter player than Matt was.
St Chalet Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 At his peak £25-30m in todays money, although in reality someone would have prised him of us for cheaper. He was in the league of the 90's Premiership greats: Cantona, Shearer, Zola and Bergkamp etc.
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Mathew Harding (Chelsea) offered what would have smashed the the transfer fee; more than Andy Cole. Base your valuation on that. Oh and by the way he scored more goals and set up more chances than Cantona in a relegation threatened team.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 He could EASILY have commanded a 35-40million fee.
Asaint4ever Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 id say 60 million. no 1 scored goals like legod

sambosa75 Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 A player with the ability to single-handedly keep a side in the Premier League? In todays market, absolutely priceless. I could see Man City paying silly money for a player like him. At his best and at his fittest, easily £30m.
St.Jeweller Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 id say 60 million. no 1 scored goals like legod Exactly...Consistently over the years in a relegation threatened team he would time and time again pull the rabbit out of the bag, I think some posters on here have forgotten the quality of the LEGODS goals,I can't remember him scoring many tap-in's. In today's silly money who's to say he wouldn't fetch 60-70 mill.

Surman4no7shirt Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Clubs signing names like Tevez and Ronaldo are not really interested in the quality of the football that they play, but the branding they can generate revenue from.

Crab Lungs Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 My first initial reaction was £35m However... Benzema, £35m too? Hmmmm
Barry the Badger Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 I'm still not convinced that many people outside of Southampton really 'got' how good MLT was. Sure he won goal of the season a few times but I'm not sure that his worth to a team was fully appreciated.
Professor Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 This thread was opened to talk about Matt as a footballer, but its also worth taking a moment to think about how he might be feeling today. Glad, I should think, that Saints have been rescued, but a couple of weeks ago Matt was looking at the prospect of being Club Chairman. Now he seems to be out in the cold and perhaps he was taken in by a group of fantasists. I'd like to see the new regime making an offer to him in whatever role he feels he could fulfil, and not just as a greeter for corporate hospitality. Has anyone heard any whispers?
Secret Site Agent Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 To us he will always remain priceless. I remember Paul Rideout! Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 Do honestly think matt is put out that a billionaire owner and top quality coach have taken over??? The man loves Saints and will be pleased we ended up with the best deal we could IMO of course
Nellie Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 My first initial reaction was £35m However... Benzema, £35m too? Hmmmm I thought about £35m initially. That's roughly what Berbatov, a player of similar style, cost. However, he's not half the player matty was, so who knows what fee he'd fetch.
Saintgaz Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 Maybe £50 million nowadays, but he'd be playing top flight footy not Div 1. Had we still had someone of his calibre now maybe we'd still be in the Prem!! He would never of left the Saints as long as we we're in the top flight, but would he have moved had we gone down?? He always wanted more international recognition and maybe surely a move to a bigger club would of enhanced this, but was always happy with us. Wonder how many French caps he'd of won had he chose them when Platini came knocking on his door?? Would of perhaps been part of the French World Cup winning team of 1998 instead of being ignored by Hoddle after his hat-rick for England 'B'
MbaleSaint Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 I'm still not convinced that many people outside of Southampton really 'got' how good MLT was. Sure he won goal of the season a few times but I'm not sure that his worth to a team was fully appreciated. In far-flung places, like Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, I've had locals see my Saints cap and immediately say 'Matt le Tissier, great player'. He is much more famous world-wide than we think.
Thedelldays Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 there is no way MLT would get more than say £35m(ish)...no way
suspect everyone Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 Speaking of MLT, check out this piece of football what-ifs from the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/jul/24/joy-of-six-football-what-ifs Number 4: What if MLT's volley had dipped under the bar in his friendly appearance for England against Romania? I guess MLT's whole career is characertised by what-ifs. Oh, and if he was around today he'd probably command a £16 million transfer fee.
disintegration87 Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 did MLT really score 47 out of 48 penalties? If so why the f*** didnt he play for england more?
Thedelldays Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 did MLT really score 47 out of 48 penalties? If so why the f*** didnt he play for england more? because he was an enigma
Mustapha Fag Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 because he was in enigma i hate all that gregorian chanting stuff
kpturner Posted 24 July, 2009 Posted 24 July, 2009 did MLT really score 47 out of 48 penalties? If so why the f*** didnt he play for england more?Perhaps there is more to playing for England than taking penalties.
