londonsaint1604 Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Last pre-season we did alright as I remember and Mcgoldrick scored a few goals. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Saint Billy Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 In my mind, a good pre season = bad season poor pre season = good season IMO, bad results against the likes of Totton, Eastleigh and Salisbury= bad team that will struggle in league 1. Pardew I am sure is working hard to sort this out but at this moment in time I take no comfort from the friendly results so far.

We may struggle in League 1 this year, afterall we are handicapped with a 10 point deduction let alone the state of the current squad. But this all about a long term planning. I think they were talking about a five year plan. So... Year 1 - League 1 survival Year 2 - Promotion Year 3 - Survive in CCC Year 4 - Mid table / maybe play offs Year 5 - Promotion to Prem I would be happy with that. Although I suspect that it will not be enough for some.....
The9 Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Will Man City be spending another £500m on players because they lost to Orlando Pirates? Bad example.

Yes I think that as well but I would suggest Year 1 - Mid Table League 1 Year 2 - Promotion Year 3 - Mid Table League CCC Year 4 - Top 10 / maybe play offs Year 5 - Promotion to Prem but of course nothing is guaranteed

The Godfather Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Leeds qualified for the play-offs with -10 They had -15.
CB Saint Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Leeds qualified for the play-offs with -10 And if we do, happy days. But I would be happy with the the original time plan.
Crouch Ender Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 And if we do, happy days. But I would be happy with the the original time plan. Same here. Leeds hit the ground running that season - they'd retained Wise as manager so he had a full pre-season with the players and was able to instil the siege mentality that enabled them to claw those points back. Bates also took back control of the club after administration. So they had a measure of stability that we simply have not had since our relegation - it's not a valid comparison.
John B Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Leeds qualified for the play-offs with -10 But they had a decent team we dont

Although I suspect that it will not be enough for some..... I have no problem with the time table but I feel it needs more than a couple of new quality players in even to just to just survive in league 1 let alone overturn the -10. I suppose it is early days to try and guess at what side we will end up with once Pardew has finalised his squad, but imo we need about 5 or 6 new players to get anywhere close to having a side that will hold its own using the friendlies as a benchmark. I know that some of our first choice are not getting games yet but even so, we are well short of quality and experience.
dune Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 I've been to enough pre season "training sessions" to know they are just run outs. The results mean absolutely nothing. Don't fret.

JustMike Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 but they are only friendlies! AP will know what is needed and will no doubt sort it out. Im not too worried by the results at the moment
egreog Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Hearts will be more of an indication of how we are I feel. Absolutely right........ Hearts will bring support and will NOT treat as a friendly.......they will want to beat Saints and Plymouth fair and square for Scottish football's sake........ there will not be a friendly approach from them...........be interesting to see how Saints react
obelisk Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Well at least it's nice to be talking about football again.
Saint Billy Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 God we're really running out of things to moan about aren't we? Oh no, not the friendlies!! We aren't that thick are we? Good job we performed well in last years pre-season though right? Otherwise we might have been relegated. Let's not count the fact our new manager hasn't taken charge of a friendly yet. Let's not worry that our first team hasn't played together for 90 minutes yet. Let's not point out the we change the entire team at half time, it's been full of youth team players and for a while, we weren't even sure we'd have a club. No, it's clear that we're doomed, despite the fact we look set to have proven strikers in the league above, a good keeper wanted by a premiership team, a defender who was injured all last season, some good young players with an extra years experience, a proper manager, AND time and money to make signings. What a mess. I dont see any moaning, just debating and opinions that's all, thats what the forum is about isn't it? I have good faith in the new owner and Pardew, but as Pardew has said, we need to get into a winning mentality, and imo (notice the imo) we should be winning even the friendlies.
