shurlock Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 If you haven't seen it, worth doing so. 7-8 min interview -pretty honest and definitely a few pointers as to upcoming decisions and choices. -While impressed with the infrastructure here (fans, stadium), he singled out the scouting network as singularly poor. He is also looking to bring in an assistant sooner rather than later. -Spoke about familiar faces- Kelvin, Perry and Stern John as a thorn in his side - John will possibly get a new lease of life under AP, especially given what Pilchards was saying yesterday. -Not surprisingly, happy to have picked up Harding on a bosman - thinks this could be the beginning of a long journey. -Sent a few veiled threats to players with 'big reputations here' - if you're not motivated to play for us, especially in L1, better f**k off. Don't need to be a genius to figure out he was addressing Rasiak and Saga. -Talked about adding one or two players - not sure what he meant by this: whether its the proverbial or literal one or two. In places, talks about not making million changes, doing things nice and steady; in others saying the squad is really thin of experience and quality. -Says he's been reading alot of fans comments about areas of weakness, and frankly, his views mirror ours to a large extent. The obvious areas are all for us to see.

dubai_phil Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Amazing what happens when you allow employees to use 1) their own intelligence and 2) use the simple act of observing and listening Wonder who set that whole ethos "not allowed to do anything other than what the boss says throughout the club. (and TBF he isn't the only one in "business in general") Welcome AP and thank you for allowing us to finally see reality, and Thank God (again) that we have leaders with wisdom at long last. A lot of work to be done to undo 6 years of damage, as he says, a long journey

sotonjoe Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Don't understand the "thorn in his side" comment; the explanation then seems to contradict the meaning of thorn in his side ... could you explain?

skintsaint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 good watch, he must have logged on here by what he said, also think he had a dig at Saga and Rasiak and think they could be out the door. Hes talking the right stuff, I hope he can deliver it. So looking forward to this season. ( I said that when JVP took over too)
skintsaint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 That's what I thought, does he actually say thorn in his side? think he just ****ed the phrase up
sotonjoe Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 That's what I thought, does he actually say thorn in his side? yeh, could be that the OP has used the idiom incorrectly.

eurosaint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Don't understand the "thorn in his side" comment; the explanation then seems to contradict the meaning of thorn in his side ... could you explain? He said that Stern John had been 'a thorn in his side' previously which I took to be a compliment, so I presume that SJ had scored a few against his teams in the past ! I only watched it once but it did not seem confusing at the time to me !
sotonjoe Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 He said that Stern John had been 'a thorn in his side' previously which I took to be a compliment, so I presume that SJ had scored a few against his teams in the past ! I only watched it once but it did not seem confusing at the time to me ! Makes a bit more sense now, thanks. Your OP made it sound like he thought the three players were all thorns in his side, i.e. bad for some reason, but you didn't explain why. So he meant that Stern John has performed well against Pardew sides in the past?
derry Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 It wouldn't surprise me if he read this site, because Andy Oldknow has been on here regularly.
NickG Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 I would guess he means they were players who caused him concern, i.e. were a thorn etc, when his teams have played against them previously

Your OP made it sound like he thought the three players were all thorns in his side, i.e. bad for some reason, but you didn't explain why. So he meant that Stern John has performed well against Pardew sides in the past? The OP was from Shurlock not me ! My understanding was as I stated, maybe Shurlock had a different interpretation but I am pretty sure that I heard it right ! Anyway the crux of what AP said seemed to indicate that Stern, Kelvin and Perry are IN, Razza and Saga are OUT !
hypochondriac Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 It's a really good interview. If you can listen I suggest you do. He strongly hints he does not want people who do not want to be there and will be shipping them out sharpish. He must have seen something he didn't like.
VectisSaint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Interesting interview, a lot can be read into not just what he says but the body language. The clear message that came over to me is that he is shocked by the lack of quality, lack of organisation and the lack of depth at the Club. It is clear also that there is a motivation problem, there is a losing mentality. I think he is quite overwhelmed with the sixe of the task that he has taken on. But he also is pulling no punches. Won't make wholesale changes but anyone not motivated is out the door and some serious work is required. Quite shocked by the scouting bit, not just the lack of scouts, but the lack of information about opposition etc, to me this is a very damning indictment of JP/MW.
saintalan Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 It wouldn't surprise me if he read this site, because Andy Oldknow has been on here regularly. Would think, more likely, he asked someone to give him a one page synopsis on fans views.

No -you're absolutely correct -Stern had previously been thorn in Pards side - must have a decent scoring record against teams -Reading, West Ham, Charlton- Pards has managed.
Chez Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 he singled out the scouting network as singularly poor. looks like he has been reading my posts...

hypochondriac Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Would agree about the scouting network. We never seemed to go for any decent players in the CCC. The types like Lita the first time round or the older ones last year and before. You can pick up bargains much easier if you have a decent network.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Amazing what happens when you allow employees to use 1) their own intelligence and 2) use the simple act of observing and listening Wonder who set that whole ethos "not allowed to do anything other than what the boss says throughout the club. A lot of work to be done to undo 6 years of damage, as he says, a long journey I had a little chuckle in reading your reply as that, coupled with the OP's precis of AP's interview, tells me that us fans are not as far wide of the mark as some would have us believe!
dune Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 He said he'll be looking at the big name players and if they don't put the effort in then they're out the door. He made the point that a less skillful player that works hard and makes the effort is more important than a skillful player that doesn't work hard. This is bang on the mark and applies to any job or profession. He strongly criticised the scouting network. SFC used to be second to none in this area and it's crucial that this is sorted out. I understand the finacial constraints for the previous 2 or 3 years, but i feel the youth policy of the previous regime would have been a major factor in the disintegration of our scouting network. We'll soon be getting back to being a conventionally run set-up run the way the manager wants it as oposed to the way Rupert Lowe wanted it run. This can only be a good thing. I really like what Alan Pardew is saying and the way he says it and in him i do believe we have the man to lead us through the divisions.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 TBF you can never accuse Lowe of neglecting the scouting network. I always thought he did pretty well in that respect. last seasons signing would suggest otherwise
dune Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Since when has Saints scouting network been second to none though..? In the 80's and early 90's. We were particularly strong in getting in North East players. I think Lawrie Mac was a big factor in laying the foundations for the strong scouting network.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 1976-1986. Ok, fair enough, I thought he meant more recently than that, 'tis all. I can't ever remember Saints having a great scouting network, it's always been average at best to me.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Hopefully, if he has been reading this site, he'll be bringing in Tommy Widdrington as his number 2 shortly.
crouchi Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Who was the old chief scout that lived in the Canaries and never found anyone?
suewhistle Posted 21 July, 2009 Posted 21 July, 2009 Cooper? I thought he did. Pahars, Svensson etc..
LaptopSaint Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Really good interview - we aim to get somewhere towards the middle of the table by Christmas and then try to push on from there. No promises, realistic stuff - and what he's heard from the fans over the past week sums up the problems he can already see himself. So we're not as stupid as we think we are.

Quite shocked by the scouting bit, not just the lack of scouts, but the lack of information about opposition etc, to me this is a very damning indictment of JP/MW. Dont want to stick up for JP/MW but the lack of scouting could be put down to the massive cost cutting that has been going on for ages? Catch 22 situation as without the decent scouting we end up with Pulis and co. It seems that AP has to not only build a team to play each week but also build a complete backroom team from top to bottom. Could be the end for a fair few familiar faces around the place and could also mean scrapping the idea of going for promotion this season. Survival may be a more realistic target this term with a push for play offs next season.
dubai_phil Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 Who was the old chief scout that lived in the Canaries and never found anyone? and Drogba and Adebayor

eelpie Posted 22 July, 2009 Posted 22 July, 2009 TBF you can never accuse Lowe of neglecting the scouting network. I always thought he did pretty well in that respect. Except that his policy was to sell, not to buy - unless the odd Pulis bargain falls into his lap.
SaintRichmond Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Cooper? I thought he did. Pahars, Svensson etc.. I didn't realise they both played for Canary Is FC ... ???? IMHO ... Cooper was a very OVERPAID Useless so called "Scout"
SaintRichmond Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 Hopefully, if he has been reading this site, he'll be bringing in Tommy Widdrington as his number 2 shortly. I would have thought Dillon is have been his first choice ... ???? ......... IMHO, Henderson can go ...... I can't think what he's been doing to be honest ......... a lot of his proteges can't even use or kick a ball properly.
stinhk Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 In the 80's and early 90's. We were particularly strong in getting in North East players. I think Lawrie Mac was a big factor in laying the foundations for the strong scouting network. Bar one or two obvious names, who else? I would be interested to see the list of successful players scouted from the NE. IMO our scouting system has been extremely poor for a very long time. Yes we poached some youngsters into our academy over the last few years and called them our own. But really, what has been our hit-rate of uncovering hidden gems over say, the last 20 years? Not sure it would stand up to scrutiny. Terry Cooper....bah!
SaintRobbie Posted 23 July, 2009 Posted 23 July, 2009 -Says he's been reading alot of fans comments about areas of weakness, and frankly, his views mirror ours to a large extent. . Hi Alan! Thanks for listening.
