wimbornesaint Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 I don't recognise him....any clues? Andy Oldknow?
Chez Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 When I went to change seats (to sit near mates) I was told by the ticket office that the whole ground was sold out apart from the Northam. Strange as block 5 in itchen was half empty.
Tractor_Saint Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 A selection of pics for those not there... Before the game complete with Swiss Flag 1-0 and the pretty full Northam celebrates A not so full Itchen & Chapel Hope the pics aren't too large - and will take a better camera next time
RonManager Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 Just got home. Had a great day and thought we were very competitive up to half time - cracking goal. Second half we tired and were caught for pace time and time again. MoM - Simon Gillett and Joseph Mills. Murty looked solid (hope the knee injury isn't too bad) but Rasiak - out for a country walk! Totally agree about people leaving early. It's disrespectful to the new owners and also disrespectful to the memory of Ted Bates. My seat is on the end of a row and I spent the last 15 mins stood up while people left. Hearts will be very interesting after Pardew has had them for a week.
captainchris Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 Okay thoughts on the game. Kelvin Davies was fantastic today as per usual, although the second goal he really should have done better on, but that had more to do with Molyneux's inept defending style of not even attempting to close down Suarez who could have had a cup of tea and a cigarette and Molyneux still wouldn't have challenged him. Joseph Mills was superb I thought, in terms of work rate and getting up and down and challenges he's really up for the challenge, he still makes the odd mistake as their third goal showed when he almost scored an own goal, but he reminds me of a left back Simon Gillet with lots of energy and enthusiasm and just needs a bit more belief in himself, also really really fantastic at sliding challenges. Graeme Murty was solid he looks a bit out of shape but he seems very dependable he doesn't do alot of things wrong, he'll be an asset in league one. Paul Wotton seems to look more like a pub footballer in a Saints shirt, occasionally makes a challenge infront of the defence but we always look worse with him in the side, because all he seems capable of doing is hoofing it and fouling, I didn't see him play one good pass. Really hope we can get someone whose more capable. Rasiak looked his usual self and was totally isolated upfront however he won a few in the air and held up the ball well at times, he seemed a bit more enthusiastic we really need to support him better if we're going to use him as a target man. Most of the time it was him against four Ajax defenders. Molyneux had a really bad game, as soon as Rommedahl came on he looked clueless which is perhaps to be expected but his positioning and tackling was inept. Lloyd James didn't get involved at all, but he didn't have a terrible game. Wayne Thomas was one of the standout performers and was really looking good in the first half. Lallana was a bit quite but looked good on the ball. The squad still isn't match fit as the 60th minute mark came alot of the players were huffing and puffing, much to Ajax superb slow patient build ups and use of the full backs and width. Very well put about Paul Wotten - what is that all about? He is so far off the required standard even for this league - why oh why oh why is he still picked - no where near good enough and would not get my 'local' team, surely AP will have spotted he is not up to it, God about 20,000 others can see it a mile off.........
Minsk Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 4-1? FFS! Henderson out!! Seriously though, thanks for all the reports and pictures guys and gals. I wish I could have been there. It sounds like we did okay for most of the match. A couple of new signings and we should be okay. Roll on the start of the season.
LeBoyer Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 I took my son along for his first game ever at St. Marys; I told him it was Markus Liebherr's too. He had a great time and really wants to go back again - he's only seven - irrespective of the scoreline. I thought I would mark his day by taking my videocamera and am glad I did. I've put together some footage of Markus Liebherr, Alan Pardew in the Directors box and a montage put together by Saints TV. If you want to have a look at it, please help yourselves....

eelpie Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 First half was good, and I thought we were unlucky to concede the penalty, however they were in the box too often for comfort and 'falling' too easily. Eventually the ref fell for it. In truth in the first half Saints were well organised and defended doggedly, with some discipline. Looked dangerous in attack on the break too. Our goal was deserved. In the second half too many substitutions spoiled our rhythm, and Ajax calmly took control, playing some slick, effortless football.. The last twenty minutes were painful. Saints more or less gave up, The old lack of stamina again. Ajax looked casually confident and could easily have scored twice as many but for some great saves by Kelvin. AP and ML certainly know what has to be done. I hope we get Leroy Lita. Rasiak and Saga looked like they didn't want to be on the pitch. (ML by the way looked like he was enjoying himself.)
benjii Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 Stewart Henderson ruined today as a footballing spectacle for me. It was a complete waste of time to play the way we did for 90 minutes. We made no attempt to pressurise Ajax whatsoever and played a ridiculously defensive system with everyone but the lone striker spending most of the match at least 10 yards inside their own half. What on earth we were supposed to learn from that, I have no idea. It was quite embarassing at times.
haddock22 Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 having not watched both rasiak and saga for a season I noticed today that neither has improved and both looked like they didnt want to be there.Surely someone out there can be conned to take them off our hands. They both reminded me of the bad old days so lets part ways asap and bring in players who want to play for the club

I thought Rasiak was one of our only players who didn't look out of their depth against Ajax. If Rasiak can be persuaded to stay it would be utter madness not to keep him. He would easily score 30 goals in League One.

Saint_clark Posted 18 July, 2009 Posted 18 July, 2009 Mills MOTM, despite leaving the near post for corners and costing us a goal because of it. Davis should have told him as soon as he started to wander off to just get back on the post and stay there.

thorpie the sinner Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 Thought the first half was good, and we played the ball about nicely! murty and Mills looked good, and Thomas was a rock alongside Perry! Shame the ref gave a highly dubious pen!!! Second half with the changes and defensive set up, we just looked ordinary and got for pace and fitness in the last ten minutes!! Can't believe so many people left, bordering on shameful! the whole crowd should have stayed and had a sing song on behalf of new owner. It looked pathetic, we should have been welcoming and showed what true fans we are! Really disappointed!

Kingsbridge Saint Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 Result and performance irrelevant. I am sure that by Christmas our first team and style of play will bear no resemblance to this game. Go Alan Pardew!! UTS.
sidthesquid Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 The slide rule pass that put Lallana in to cross it for Mills to score was played by who.....? he might have been aiming for Lallana but it went to James:rolleyes:
ottery st mary Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 Returned home late last night after a really great day out...Like others placed in the Kingsland corner with Northam. My season ticket is over in the Itchen but was an empty seat... obviously part of the giveaway...I was sat With some really good fans but thought the Northam were truly great ..especially first half.....Saw the new owner arrive and depart...for some reason I was like a schoolboy awaiting the arrival of royalty....but true praise to the man for saving the club. Appears up for it....May have to give old Pardew a bit of a hand with 3-5 new players. Many of the reports of the game are sound and reasonably accurate.....I thought Saints played very well first half but tired legs and substitutions second half showed what we are...4/5 leagues below Ajax.....Who, as you would expect very Comfortable on the ball...playing for each other...width and getting stuck in when required.....CLASS..Playing at their own pace and raising the game whenever required.. Davis great saves and SO pleased he stayed. Mills will be very good...Sorry Moly not quite up to it. Thomas has to stay alongside Perry...But will Thomas be off? Need him to stay.. Murty took a knock on his knee...but after hisfitness level being raised, he will be an asset. Some problems with midfield and up front...Spiderman looked up for it when he came on....... but a few new faces will be the order of the day......Saga/Rasa ..one or both loaned out......Saga to Ajax as a squad player.. maybe. But need dual strikers at all times in the league. Once we are underway with a few additions we will be alright.....But feel TWO up front in all future games.....Henderson did well in the circumstances and had to play that system first half....due to Ajax being what they were...Class. Wotte at the game..as was his brother who is an agent in Holland and arranged the game for Saints....

OldNick Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 I missed first 10minutes as my tickets didnt arrive nad traffic bad. That must have been when Rasiak was up for it, because I thought he was dire and not up for it.Thomas was unlucky for the penalty, Davis was very good Gillett did well.Molyneax at fault for 2nd goal, Mills did well and brilliant tackle to stop Rommadahl but then messed upp from the resulting corner.Much to do and playing 1 up front was dire.Thompson I notice somebody said is 1 to watch, for me he is not up to it at present.Lallana did a fancy trick and that was about it.
ottery st mary Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 who is Bob???? Well done the Northam gang:smt054
Wes Tender Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 In view of our circumstances, with four of the better players having been sold recently, it was a creditable performance. We didn't disgrace ourselves. After all, what else would anybody have expected watching a third division team taking on one of the historically big names in European football? And when we scored first, it even looked as if we might get something from the match. For a while, it looked a familiar pattern from over the past season. There was a team playing the legendary total Dutch football, passing the ball around well, but facing a team that sat back until they got to the final third, robbed them of the ball and hoofed it upfield to exploit the open spaces behind them. The only difference was that it wasn't us playing the Dutch total football, thank God. But neither had we re-adjusted back to playing the typical British game with a 4-4-2, sadly. Had we done so, perhaps we might have asked a few more questions of them. There were some positives to take away from the match though. We did better than Bristol City from the division above, who failed to score against them. A few performances shone out or offered a glimmer of hope for the future if those players remain and receive some good coaching. Mills stood out in many instances and took the goal well, generally put himself about and showed good commitment. Of the youngsters, Gillett was also his usual combative self. Lallana and Schneiderlin obviously have talent and it will be interesting to see what Pardew can make of it. The player who is already excellent and has committed himself to stay, is Kelvin. Yesterday he produced some World class saves, preventing Ajax from adding a certain extra couple of goals to their tally. The defence in front of him was generally sound for much of the match, until we started tinkering with it. Thomas gave a good account of himself, Perry was always reliable, as was Murty, who needs to sharpen up with his fitness, but like Dodd before him, shows that often when an older defender lacks pace, he can often make up for it by canny positioning and anticipation. Like others, I find it difficult to know exactly what Wotton brings to the team, apart from commitment. Overall, it was a great day because of the introduction of our new owner and manager and an opportunity for them to have a good look at us too. Apart from those leaving early before the presentation of the trophy, I hope that their impressions were favourable. Both should have a pretty fair idea of what needs to be done to improve the team, who to keep and who to let go.

Graffito Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 I'm still standing by my long held opinion that Morgan Schneiderlin is a class act, despite what others on here think. Was very good when he came on. He was head and shoulders above any other Saints player and could slot quite easily into Ajax's team. I'm surprised he's still here.

corky morris Posted 19 July, 2009 Posted 19 July, 2009 Decided to make the trip as the tickets came with our season tickets. Even though we lost I felt quite optimistic. I thought Mills (goal aside), Gillet, Davies & Rasiak had excellent games. I really hope we can keep Rasiak & or Saga & John as I think we have a good chance of the play offs even with a 10pt deficit. Couple of points. A number of players looked as though they were carrying to much weight. Thomas, Murty, Saga inparticular. Molyneux is a very poor player. James was awful in the middle of midfield. 4-1-4-1 leaves the central striker very isolated. They had some real quality & pace, but up until we started messing with subs we gave them a real good game.
