When are some people going to start looking to the future instead of dwelling on the past? LM did a great job for us, but that was 30 years ago. We are a completely different club now. Football has changed and I'm not convinced that somebody who did a great job 30 years ago has much to offer these days.

Misread again Alps. It's turned into another 'pathetic excuse' for Lawrie worship as we've all been told that we must tune in to listen to him on the radio or else we're disrespecting him. Try reading carefully before engaging that potty mouth of yours next time though eh?

I don't think that anyone said you had to listen. The poster was just making people aware than LM was on. You, of course, were perfectly entitled not to listen but why you felt that you had to proclaim the fact by coming on to the thread to indulge in a long round of totally pointless arguments is beyond me. I have formed the opinion over the last couple of days that you are yet another WUM.

time to move on guys SFC is a living thing - no disrespect to Lawrie or Matt le Tiss but this is a new chapter of history. Tiss and Lawrie Mac are part of our great club's history and should stay there, we need to grip reality of being minus 10 points in the 3rd division of English football. This is reality and we welcome SFC Markus Liebherr and Alan Pardew with open arms and wish them good luck in trying to re-build our once great club

If I had the option of a picture of a train or one of LM for my office wall, I'd go with the train.

I would go with a picture of LM and buy some darts.

Why? Because he is to date our greatest manager but IMO has used up all the good will that he earned in that role by some his poisonous comments about how the club was being run and taking sides when frankly he should have been a diplomat and arbitrator.

We should also not forget that after his time as manager and failure at Sunderland he was welcomed back and for many years was allegedly well looked after financially with alleged claims that would make an MP blush.

IMO McMenemy post his managerial role took more than he gave and a very good greeter and shaker he may have been but ambassador in the true meaning or the word he was not. As always this is just my humble opinion before Gaffer, Scally and co start chucking out the legalise.

Hallelujah!

We don't need old names from our past to experience halcyon days in the future even though they may have helped deliver some happy memories.

IMO, history should dictate that anyone in our recent past who has meddled with club matters be they legends, those less than legendary (Dave Armstrong, Gordon Strachan, Paul Tisdale, anyone with a surname of Dennis, Kevin Keegan etc) rich fans, or ex directors should buy a ticket if they want to remain in touch with the club. Beyond that, their contribution and opinions should not be sought.

Welcome to the 21st Century almost 10 years to late. The club is beginning to show signs of being well run and those who want to rock the boat......:smt039

Don't drink, but had a 6 hour round trip to Essex this evening courtesy of M25 hell and about a litre of Red Bull to keep me awake from the sheer boredom and now can't sleep and probably thinking gibberish. I will have another look and let you know.

Let me assure you it does not cost me one second's sleep. I was enjoying how you had popped up about every third post on this thread, trying to stifle any opinion contrary to yours. A bit like the Woggy thread.

And as for your list of names who have supported LM, well that is just hilarious. I know 2 of them well - very well. When I next see you, I'll give you some truths - if you can face it.

Why? Are you a bit of an Anorak? Would you rather be standing on the bridge over the railway on a Saturday afternoon, notebook in hand?

You do seem rather angst whenever his name is mentioned!! With regards stifling debate, it's not like you to over react now is it (last time I checked, I didn't have the power of deleting others posts);)

I will await with interest how the two you know will not even have one good thing to say about him and how they will want to take his head off.

Don't tell me, shock horror, successful football manager acts in an egotistical manner and throws his weight around whilst working in an era where the industry was awash with under the counter payments.

Agreed. I don't have much recollection of sotonjoe's presence on here until quite recently and all of a sudden he's all over the place like a rash; appropriate word really, as rash also describes much of what he says too. ;)

This is precisely the response given to another post just above. Is it some macho thing with you, attempting to gain some sort of posting record in the shortest period of time? It's often the case that the faster a river flows, the shallower it is.

You failed to read the post the first time and posted something which showed that was so. I thought it might help you if it was posted twice. If you wish to get involved in the discussion then do so, if you wish to have a childish (or macho as you call it) slanging match, go somewhere else.

I think that whenever sotonjoe posts ad nauseum, we ought to just end the debate there and then. It would be funny waiting to see how long it would take for him to post asking why nobody had any further opinions.

So he was there, declaring we would get relegated with Poortvleit in charge .

how so?

uhm...because we got relegated...as said, most could have predicted the same but quoting him when he was actually right in his prediction does not make sense

it does if you understand the discussion!

Besides, we didn't get relegated with Poortvleit in charge anyway!

My point there was that Lawrie was reportedly standing up in front of a room full of crowded people, inc members of the public present due to owning a few shares in SFC, and Jan himself, directing a tirade at Lowe and declaring that SFC would get relegated with "that man" [Jan] in charge.

Some people will say they agree with what he was saying, but that's neither here nor there. I'm more interested in the way in which he conducted himself there. It seems aggressive, very offensive to our then current manager and overly emotive. For his wife to then chip in about some silly painting and turn the whole thing into a farce, while our club was slowing being ripped to shreds, is abosolutely ridiculous.

Whilst those with power should have been doing there best to formulate a plan that would have given us the best chance of survival for the season, they were too busy arguing, and communication had clearly broken down to the extent that nobody was helping to stabilise the situation. Moreover, by playing their part in the squabbles, all present were continuing to destabilise the club. That's what I was showing, but Um is still waiting for the audio transcript before he makes up his mind. He doesn't believe Lawrie did anything.

Well, I was there at that AGM and fully support Lawrie's opinion and his right to express that opinion. Were you there? If not, then it is surely difficult to express an opinion on the meeting or the behaviour of those there. Most people in the room agreed with what he said. Had you been there, then you would have realised that the whole tone of the meeting was set by Lowe reading out his anonymous letter preening his ego, so any hopes of a concilliatory atmosphere were lost in the first few minutes.

Most are also quite happy to consign that period of Lowe's tenure to the dustbin of history. Raking over the coals is becoming extremely tedious.

this thread shows why past members of any regime need to be kept away. I myself have great memories of LM of his time before he deserted us and will be thankful of that. If he had gone on and been successful at a different club after us he wouldnt IMO be in our boardroom or talking about us.He left us in the lurch to go to Sunderland (his home area) and failed, had he not done so I doubt he would give us more than a cursory glance.

LM pre 1985 i salute and thank you with all my heart....being involved in the decision making team when Geoff Thomas was selected before the magnificent MLT for England I cannot forgive.Pathetic I know but i dislike Everton for Highbury, just a character flaw in me Im afraid.

The only thing that has brought me around a little was when Daren Wheeler pointed out he stayed with us 12 years, for that I feel he did do a lot more than I had let my disappointment cloud.

Thank you for confirming that Lawrie did play a part in proceedings; that's all I was after.

So that too confirms that I am justified in not wanting to hear from any of them ever again without being told I'm disrespecting any of them.

As you said, the debate of who was most right or wrong is long gone and has been done to death so we shan't bother with that here. :)

yes, managed from 73-85 I believe. And I'd be interested to hear from someone who remembers that era clearly how on earth we were able to put together such a strong team at that time? Whilst the Dell obviously held a lot more in those days, surely we didn't have attendances to rival the big, big clubs, so it couldn't have been down to a huge cash flow.

Was it just a case of doing an Allardyce and signing old pros in an attempt to get one more good season out of them?

2 things about that meeting, the mood was always going to be balanced against IT, and if you talk about egos and the main thrust seemed to be about a picture of LM being taken down then i suggest it was on both sides.

Getting on for almost 20 years and my irrational "hatred" of Everton is probably based on no more than Adrian Heath and that semi (although Being brought up to boo John Bailey may have had a subconscious effect as well!!).

As for this thread, I wouldn't read too much into it, it's mainly one dinlo who probably doesn't even know who Adrian Heath is if his posts are anything to go by.

LM was IMO the first master in getting old top footbalers to play at the end of their careers and give us glorious times, this moved on to bringing some fine young players. He was before his time in that IMO and soon others took it on and it became harder. He tried the same again at Sunderland but for some reason it failed.

So Allardyce learnt it all from Lawrie Mac's biography then!?!?!? The cheeky swine!
