sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Because its people like this who's achievements contribute to the history and tradition of the club - its exactly the style of football orchestrated by LM that we all wish for now. The most successful manager in our history. Who would deny Alex Furgeson an opinion on manure in ten years time? Whose denying him an opinion? I'm just not interested in listening to it! Do you think he'd be personally very hurt by that?
offix Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Sad to say Offix we should be used to it by now shouldn't we. It's hard to get used to such venom towards a great character in our history, especially if that venom comes mostly from people who are too young to ever have experienced Lawrie's time as manager "in the flesh".
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Sad to see how so many on here cannot bring themselves to show some basic respect for our club's footballing history, and the people that were responsible for making some of that history absolutely glorious. Next they'll be knocking Ted Bates. Disgraceful. By not turning on the radio, does that mean I'm not showing respect for our fa cup win? What a ludicrous idea.

JHsaintsfan Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Lawrie Mac has his place in a lot of our hearts for the accomplishments during his tenure and due to this we will be interested in his thoughts. I was slightly too young to fully appreciate the cup win but the season after Alan Ball gave me a football at the start of a game against Palace. A Palace fan grabbed it off me to leave me crestfallen. I wrote (in my best handwriting) to explain what had happened to Lawrie Mac and sent my programme with the letter - I had it returned with autographs of all the team. Happy days - which are hopefully about to begin again (probably a bumpy road). My sons only two so I'm hoping he will get to see the Saints climb to the top of the tree (or close) again.

That's beautiful. Does that mean I'm hyper bad for not wanting to listen to him on the radio?
offix Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 where's the venom? Just a small example of your venom: "How on earth is LAwrie Mac relevant now? His most recent contribution was to help destabilise the club so we certainly don't need more words from him now." A totally baseless accusation. If you don't mind (and even if you do), I'll put you on my ignore list. You really aren't worth the effort of listening to. Much like the way you treat Lawrie.
Supersubpuckett Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Whose denying him an opinion? I'm just not interested in listening to it! Do you think he'd be personally very hurt by that? Doubt it very much

It seems pretty matter of fact to me. As for baseless .. .you best dig out those old radio solent recordings of the agms if you don't remember all the embarrassing squabbling that went on between the lot of them. You are very, very easily shocked, if criticims of this level appalls you that's for sure. And so very big with your ignore button as well. That's like putting your fingers in your ears and saying lalala when somebody says something you don't like. good luck out there in that big bad world ... you're gonna do great!
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Doubt it very much exactly ... i'm sure he couldn't care less ... and he certainly wouldn't be chirping "do the respect of listening to me, I achieved great things ofr this club between 1973 and 1985". See .. I even know the dates without looking them up. Bet some of the moral crusaders championing him don't even know that much info!
Thedelldays Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 sotonjoe.. after calling service personnel muppets without provocation and then justufying it with another meaning added to this, makes come across as a bit of a heartless so and so..IMO

Feel free to post these links to AGM recordings. Are they what you've based your views on. Would love to hear them.
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 with another meaning added to this, makes come across are you on the beers already as that certainly doesn't make any sense to me!
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Feel free to post these links to AGM recordings. Are they what you've based your views on. Would love to hear them. I wouldn't waste my time! All of us on here know what went on. Sill, playground-esque squabbles about about pictures of trains and the like. What a silly line to try and take this discussion on anyway .... " if you haven't got recordings edited with lawrie's exact words clearly audible then I'm sure he didn't play any part in any of the agreements". If you really think that Lawrie played NO PART in the boardroom squabbles then you are mad. Still, this isn't supposed to be another one of THOSE threads. This is about whether not wanting to hear Lawrie on the radio makes somebody a bad person.

I think you'll find that you were the one insisting that we should look those links up and using them to justify your position. I would conjecture that the very fact the recordings which you rely on don't actually exist sort of makes your argument rather weak at best.

I don't know of any ex player who has worked with him, that have a good word to say about him. In fact some would rather take his head off than shake his hand at certain points. All those qualities that made him such a good manager equally made him devisive when not in that position. A double edged sword that is more concerned with the self than the club. After a while of listening to The I's and me's rather than the us and Saints it starts to grate. Just thankful for the quiet over the England involvement.
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 I think you'll find that you were the one insisting that we should look those links up and using them to justify your position. I would conjecture that the very fact the recordings which you rely on don't actually exist sort of makes your argument rather weak at best. I suggested that people might want to remind themselves of the events of these meetings to remember that all involved made themselves look like children (o members of tsw) with their petty squabblings, when they should have been doing their best to present a united front amidst very difficult circumstances. The onus isn't on me to prove that. The accusations of being disrespectful by not being interested in what Lawrie has to say were made at me and not by me. The accusers should be proving why my lack of interest makes that bad and to do this they need to show that Lawrie played no part at all in our downfall. And let's be very clear, that needs to be NO PART AT ALL, since I'm not saying he was the main protagonist. I'm saying there were a bunch of people with differing levels of responsibility from whom I don't want hear about what is and isn't good for sfc ever again. And FWIW, I have just wasted five minutes of my life and found this first had account of the goings on at one of our agms ... Then Lawrie MacMenemy stood and also laid into Lowe in his stentorious tones, dismantling one by one of Lowe's claims about the academy, the dismissal of Pearson, the appointment of Poortvliet amongst other subjects. He concluded that Poortvliet was totally out of his depth here and that we would be relegated if he pursued the same policies. At the end of the question and answer session at 12, Lawrie's wife asked Lowe why the portrait of her husband holding the FA Cup had been replaced by that painting of the Steam train gifted us by Doncaster Rovers. Lowe's response that there was simply no room for it brought gasps of incredulous amazement from the room.So he was there, squabbling (shouting if stentorious is anything to go by) with the rest of them, declaring we would get relegated with Poortvleit in charge when the poor bloody guy was sat there in the room with them. As I said, playing a supporting role in the cast of characters who made us look a laughing stock. And that, once more, is why I have no interest in listening to what he has to say about our owner or manager ... I want a clean, clean break.
um pahars Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 I don't know of any ex player who has worked with him, that have a good word to say about him. How about the following players who have publicly backed Lawrie at events (or in private) I have been to over the years: Osgood Channon (who shared a platform with him recently) Rodrigues Fisher Bennett Ball Williams Wallace Peach Steele I really could go on and on and on (let me know if you need any more names)

um pahars Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 I suggested that people might want.................... You suggested that the poster looked up the Radio Solent recordings of the AGM as a part of your argument. They don't exist. HTH
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 the best football ever played under big mac, they were wonderful times. yeh, and who was it who posted a link to a video of one of our goals whilst he was manager just the other day?!?!?!? But clearly, I have no respect at all for the man.
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 You suggested that the poster looked up the Radio Solent recordings of the AGM as a part of your argument. They don't exist. HTH Don't be silly Um ... recordings or reported accounts, it makes little difference. You're saying the account I quoted is all made up now? Whatever next! You know, as well as I do what happened at those meetings; are you seriously trying to suggest that Lawrie sat there tight lipped throughout and played no part at all in the rowing?
um pahars Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Don't be silly Um ... recordings or reported accounts, it makes little difference. So one minute to proved that your argument isn't baseless you tell us to go and look up some non-existent recordings, then the next they make little difference. Doesn't really reflect very well on you does it;)

Thedelldays Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 with all the board room wrangle, I was not too interested in what Big Mac had to say..not interested at all.. However..come to football matters and talkshows want opinions, then he (along with MLT and one or two others) are seen as "saints" and he is bloody well known..
um pahars Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 However..come to football matters and talkshows want opinions, then he (along with MLT and one or two others) are seen as "saints" and he is bloody well known.. As you say Lawrie must be on the media's list of contacts under Saints, just as Sillett/Jimmy Hill etc get rolled out when Coventry are in the spotlight, Micky Thomas at Wrexham etc etc etc. It hardly makes him the Official Commentator though.
alpine_saint Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Christ, has this thread turned into another pathetic excuse for McMenemy-bashing ? FFS, we have some tw*ts following our club.
Frank's cousin Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 (edited) The reason he does not have the universal appeal that his legacy SHOULD command based on his footballing successes with saints is sadly because he did get involved in the whole politicking ever since he left the club. His opinions ARE valid and he has the right to express them, but by taking his line and speaking very publically through the media, he entered the 'game' and therefore those who maybe did not agree with his opinion naturally became suspicious of him. This does not in anyway belittle his history or achivements but for some its bound to have dented his credibilty as an elder statesmen of the game - Ted never got involved in all that political stuff publically, even if personally he may not have agreed with the way things were being run during his last years (that is speculation, as i dont know his thoughts on the Lowe years) - thats I think what some have an issue with. The problem then is that those who are critical of some of Lawries recent comments and stances, are themselves criticised for not appreciating all he has done for it...which is not the case... but those achievements do not mean you have to agree with everything he stands for now or believe everything he says as gospel... he has been known to use some of the same hyperbolic rhetoric that has become urban myth without any foundation - the highly emotive 'where has all the money gone' being one of them... If that is a question he really wanted the answer to, he only needed to read the annual audited accounts - possibly a better source of a straight answer than asking it rhetorically in radio and Echo land... once you enter that game, you have to accept that not all will blindly follow your thoughts just because you were our greatest ever manager and brought about our greatest successes. Clifford Nelson Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Lawrie Mac is a proper legend at this football club and warrants respect. The only problem for him was that he had the habit of speaking his mind. Not popular these days when the only demand for high office is to suck up to the bosses, whatever they want. I sincerely hope that the new regime can find a way of honouring him.
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Christ, has this thread turned into another pathetic excuse for McMenemy-bashing ? FFS, we have some tw*ts following our club. Misread again Alps. It's turned into another 'pathetic excuse' for Lawrie worship as we've all been told that we must tune in to listen to him on the radio or else we're disrespecting him. Try reading carefully before engaging that potty mouth of yours next time though eh?
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Do not think quoting him in this instance adds anything to your arguement, I know many could have predicted the same but ......... how so?

Would you look at that! Spot on FC ... as I've said, it is possible to rate the guy as a manager but not for his recent part in the boardroom squabbles. To not agree with one, hardly dismisses the other; not in the eyse of the sane anyway. I'll watch clips of our pass and move football under him all day long, but I've no intention of listening to his thoughts on our new setup.

Bearsy Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 No-one should be criticised for refusing to listen to Talksport. I do it every day.
Toomer Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Has his picture gone back up in place of Thomas the Tank Engine. To think my question with regard to picture started certain people to have a pop at the man that brought the greatest day in my 50 years as a Saints fan, how very sad.

IN MY DAY Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 A pointless nonsense debate, on a pointless nonsense thread. New owners in town, new manager at the helm, hopefully new signings on the way. all exciting stuff. The only thing that worrys me about the future, are those that support this near extinct club that cant leave the past. Move on guys its a new dawn, its a new day and we should be feelin good.
Toomer Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 If you think that's a linked chain of events, you're either very confused or desperately seeking a bit of attention. Would not want to take your mantle on this thread.
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Would not want to take your mantle on this thread. Don't then ... I'm having fun and my post count is rocketing ... isn't that what it's all about?
Saints Pedro Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 Come on then .. explain. Why do we have to get his seal of approval now? Why is it wrong for me to be disinterested in what he has to say? It's not wrong it's just ignorant and shows a lack of respect!
sotonjoe Posted 17 July, 2009 Posted 17 July, 2009 It's not wrong it's just ignorant and shows a lack of respect! I expect there's a lot of saints fans tonight who showed disrespect to lawrie by not listening to him on talksport this afternoon then! I don't think we'll be losing too much sleep over it, that's for sure. Care to share his wise words with us?
