Snowballs2 Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 LSG ..I admire your attitude, your blind faith etc, however when you have lived the dream as a Saints supporter for almost 60+ years, you have experienced more highs and lows than most supporters. I find it hard to keep the enthusiasm going, true I have seen more highs than lows up until 3 years ago, however I find it difficult to seperate the team from the club (PLC). The fact is that 3 different boards of directors have royally screwed my beloved Saints. It becomes less and less important to me as each passing season comes and goes. I know that we cannot go back 20 years to when we had unity of supporters , a pretty well run club and team, a small stadium with a brilliant atmosphere. Thats whats missing, the heart of the club, the passion and British players playing for pride in the team. There was no politicing by directors then, it was case of doing whats best for the club, Lowe came along and we lost the club.
Long Shot Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 As I wrote on the 'How come' thread: I think having enough money to pay off our debts and to be able to hang onto our youngsters for long enough to enjoy them will do me.
St_Tel49 Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 How about his worrying tendency to get through managers like he gets through underpants ? I suspect that the turnover would be just as rapid were you in charge since nothing short of perfection seems to be right for you - and even then you would probably find something to have a go about. dubai_phil Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 An interesting snippet of allegations from a passing pundit with links back to City..... Chelsea had a plane waiting for Robinho and were somewhat shocked to see him arrive in Manchester. City have been loosely advised that they have $900million in the war chest with which to become a global brand to help drive the recognition of Abu Dhabi. (but it would be nice if they were already qualified for the CL by January :-) Abramovich only has 12 billion, Abu Dhabi have a trillion, lol at the Chelsea paupers To be honest, as many on here have posted, it would be nice to simply get to a self funding state now because not even in our wildest dreams are we going to do it by getting a mere billionaire in as owner. (Oh and the other snippet - Keegan gave Wise a list of the players he wanted, and Wise gave him players he'd never heard of - sound familiar?) No idea how much is already urban legend but... West End Saint Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 Call me old fashioned I want to see good attacking passing football with a young mainly british team that wins more often than not I would like the exitement of a play off place but am not bothered if we dont get in the prem I dont want to know who or what the board are doing as long as it is for the good of the club/team. I think by default and lack of money we might be on the right track now lets hope so !
cf saint Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 Great thread, I do wonder if the Man City deal will be seen as the tipping point for the premier league, mainly bcause the cosy top 4 will be upset. The champions (sic for UP ) league surely can't take 5 English clubs and a G14 club won't tolerate UEFA cup football for long. So maybe (hopefully) the franchise clubs can feck off into a pan euro league soon. That doesn't mean I don't want better for saints but the premier league is a perversion of a real league. Fowllyd Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 Couple of interesting pieces from today's Guardian on the Man City saga: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/09/02/a_new_era_for_football_how_cit.html http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/09/02/united_show_me_the_way_to_go_h.html Great thread, this one - for what it's worth, I'd agree with LGSC's initial post. Would I care about where any money we may acquire comes from? I would. Do I want my club to be the plaything of a squillionaire, the route to acceptance for a highly dubious character, or a microscopic cog in someone's catastrophic plan (to paraphrase Nick Cave)? I don't.
aintforever Posted 3 September, 2008 Share Posted 3 September, 2008 I think we all agree that we would prefer to watch homegrown kids instead of over paid foreign mercenaries, this year is better so far than last because whilst we are the same position we have an affinity with the players and are watching better football and more effort. BUT, to say you would rather fail with kids than succeed with older/foreign players is complete ******. When two over paid, under performing foreign mercenaries (Rasiak and Viafara) stuffed 3 goals past Derby in the play-off semi it was one of my most enjoyable football moments ever - I thought I was going to Wembley and we were going up. I didn't give a monkeys who the players were, where they were from, how much they cost or who's money bought them. They were just two players in Saints shirts. Same when Pahars nutmeged Stam and stuffed the ball in the net at Old Trafford - (foreign player, bought with Sky's dirty cash). Same when Egil banged in a hatrick against Man U at the Dell (foreign player, bought with Sky's dirty cash). Fans of very team in the land will say they like to watch homegrown talent, but at the expense of success - no bloody way. Ask Bournemouth fans, they were forced to play their kids last year exactly how we are this season.

I guess it depends what you call success I would rather watch local talent giving 100% effort challenging for a play off place than overpaid foriegn mercenaries getting thrashed in the prem every week like Derby. If on the otherhand we had the oppurtunity to do a Man City or Chelsea and buy the best players in the world and win things I say bring it on I guess we can dream
