Gout

Following RobskII's exciting revelation in the Lounge about having a sore toe, and somebody's suggestion that it may be gout, I am moved to ask this: Do you get gout? It is supposed to be an increasingly common thing (fatness, booze).

I've had it once or twice a year for last 10 years, but am now moving into a phase where one or more joints are continually inflated and misshapen - it's basically arthritis without sympathy.

Get it controlled with Allopurinol. It makes it slightly worse for a short while then all symptoms disappear.

Mind you, unless you unload the lard you'll need to take it for the rest of your life.

If your doctor suggests taking Indomethacin (Indocin), politely suggest that he takes them first, preferably as a suppository, a bottle at a time.

I suffer from gout occasionally also. Whenever I feel a twinge I consume lots of cherries (and cherry juice if winter) which works for me. Cherries are alkaline and it counteracts the excess uric acid that causes the gout itself. So I always have a stock of cherry juice from ASDA in the cupboard just in case. Combined with ibuprofen I normally need no other prescription NSAIDS etc.

Yes, I've had that, it's a bit like somebody suggesting you take mescalin and bleach to take your mind off the pain. I go to the gym regularly and this was keeping attacks down.

I wondered with Allopurinol and any other drug you take in perpetuity - how much do you have to pay in prescription charges?
