Alan Pardew named new Southampton Manager

Dowie was only manager for about 12 games. He pushed us against the ropes, Pardew then repeatedly smashed us in the stomach.

Unfortunately our board gave him full backing because we all had faith in him. We had two left wingers on loan at the same time (Scott Sinclair and Lee Cook, both on around £10k a week), and he chose not to play them and stick with the player we already had. We had new loans coming and going on a daily basis, so many some of them couldn't make the squad. He spent £5.5m on Luke Varney, McLeod and Andy Gray, all not wirth a transfer fee within two years. He said Luke Varney had more ability than Tevez, your players won't see anything less than 5-star hotels, pre-match meals will now be at the De Vere in the Harbour, i could go on all day. As i said, perhaps we were just unlucky.

As an (on the face of it) intelligent bloke, one would hope that he has had time to reflect on that period and learn any lessons from it.

I predict he will not be here when his contract ends. I dont mean that in a bad way.

If we end up in mid table i think most people will accept that was a reasonable job with -10pts and he stays on as manager for next year.

In year 2 he has to get us promotion, if he gets us promotion i believe he will get poached - ask any MK Dons fan how this works.

If we get promoted or even nearly promoted this year that will be an excellent result with -10 pts and again he will get poached.

So win lose or draw he will not be here in 3 years.

To be fair this scenario would apply to whoever got the job.

A realistic and sensible appointment. Has done well at other clubs except Charlton. Has a 42% win ratio which is better then most people, WGS only had 33% before moving to Celtic and Wotte has a 22% ratio. The guy if given the right backing by the chairman could do well here. For League One it is a good signing and if he can get a team together like he did at West Ham and at Reading then we should do well.

For those negatives who are already having a go who did you expect Fergie? Wenger?

Strachan did well here but he was never going to come here again while we are where we are. Of what is available Pardew is a manager who gets teams playing nice football, he is respected despite his firey personality in football. He in a way is like Southampton, a person/team who has had a rough patch and needs to have some stability to build for the future. Of what was available he was not the dreamers choice but if we are after a good man manager who will tell it like it is then we have found that man.

So Welcome Alan lets now start getting in some players!

Perfect summary not the big name some were dreaming of but we may well have landed a potential diamond time will tell. Wether hes your choice or not we have to get behind him and the team. Can't believe some people are moaning already lets give the man a chance i can remember the dissapointment when strachan was appointed! we have appointed the best we could have expected at this level imo

Good appointment was dreading Adams coming here. The new owners won't want to be coming to watch an average team, they will want to bring their corporate clients/friends and make sure they watch good football and I can see some good players signing for us. Exciting times ahead I reckon.

Hopefully a great atmosphere tomorrow.

Very pleased with the appointment of Pardew. As promised by Markus and his team, a FOOTBALLING decision has been made!

Although WGS or KK would have sold tickets, they would have been emotional appointments and not long term footballing ones. As someone else rightly said; a proper manager at last!

Very happy with Pardew, would've preferred Strachan but realistically it was never going to happen. Hopefully he can get us into the play-offs (or better) this season and stabilise us in the CCC again.

Any inside sources know of any players he particularly likes that would come to SMS? Murty was with him at Reading, as was Lita too..

I think Pardew has the potential to be an excellent appointment for the club. OK, so he's not the huge name we were maybe hoping for but realistically he's the biggest we were going to get.

I remember being distinctly underwhelmed when WGS was appointed and look what happened there.

lita was never with pardew at reading. coppell signed him however he did have him on loan at charlton. i doubt that lita would want to drop down to league 1. anyway, i'm pretty happy about this decision. although, strachan would have been good, he lacks the experience of getting out of the lower leagues which pardew has on his CV.

Think he likes Bailey and Racon at Charlton, also remember he supported Fortune after he hit someone or something. If we could "poach" those three from Charlton that would be great, especially Bailey. His players record at Charlton is very mixed, a few bad and a few good. I did not realise he actually was fired after 17 games when they were 1 place above the drop zone last year. Listening to what these Charlton fans are saying they make it sound like they were bottom from the go.

Could of been better (WGS), however it could have also been a lot worse and overall happy with the appointment. Seen AP on a number of interviews and he seems a really down to earth and knowledgeable manager.

Best of luck Alan.

Has a press conference been announced yet?

(Will we get 2pm on a Friday like we always dreamed?)

Wouldn't mind betting there will be one in the morning with the new owner as well.

Now that will be worth listening to.

Great appointment and in three years we will either be back in the Prem or just about to make the final drive. Perfect time to review his contract one way or the other.

So they actually got an awful lot worse after he was sacked.

Echo poll has 81% for AP and 5% against - and yes they are reporting it as an exclusive!!

Solent were claiming an exclusive as well. So whose exclusive is it really?

There's only one way to find out.....................

Good luck and welcome to our club Alan.

I think the only reason people are underwhelmed are because of the Strachan link (incidently only linked by so called people in the know on this forum) as well as Keegan being linked by the previous bogus consortium pinnacle.

As like most mangerial appointments we will never know whether he was first choice or other names turned us down.

Couple of comments from Reading fans:

"He has a good eye for a bargain and will more than likely have you playing 451, we played some decent passing football under him. He loves his teams to wear motivational slogan covered t-shirts while warming up. Just make sure he doesn't start blabbering on about raping full backs and you'll get on just fine."

"I think he is perfect for the job (at Saints). weakness; may leave for more money at a bigger job"

Reads OK to me. 451 not very popular here at SMS tho...

Although slogan T-shirts always go down well. ;-)

I've just done mine outside the box office after renewing my ST. :) If anyone listens to Play? Radio (Hampshire) I'm the idiot who says " he's had a modicum of success".

So they actually got an awful lot worse after he was sacked.

Yes, technically. At that point he had 16 points from 17 games. Which was a 0.94 points per game average. After he left they got 23 points from 29 games which is a 0.79 points per game average.

So they dropped by 0.15. However if you follow his record through to the end he would of had 43 points which would still of been relegation.

But of course he would of had 29 games to work on it.

Personally I think 4-5-1 works when you have legs in the full backs and wide midfield players who have pace and can push on.

It should read 4-5-1 approaching 4-4-2 on most attacks - but really should adopt the 4-3-3 look when at home and trying to bury a team.

To play this way you must have the right players - we never could play 4-5-1 because we didn't have the players. Even though 4-4-2 is the way most of our squad has been brought up - with the right coaching Pardew should make it work - after all it's only football!

Big welcome to Alan Pardew.

Just instill the winning mentality and the fans will respond! It's going to be a long hard slog but you have the full backing of the majority, and despite being split in the past couple of years the fan base is more united. We like our Managers to punch the air, jump up and down and verbally abuse the players to let them know what's what...I think you may be just what we need after the "Dutch Experiment".

Put your mark on SMS and make it a fortress again - a place where the visitors are scared what will hit them...in recent times all they've done is take the points on a nice day out.

It was on the breaking news ticker on the BBC sports website about 11.30pm or so last night.

Richard Bacon read it out on 5-live at about 11:20 yesterday, so guessing that was fed from BBC Solent

is pardew on his hols at the moment? just wondering why there has been no tv interviews yet plus it was announced early hours of this morning. maybe he is in the USA or Carribbean where they are quite a bit behind us in time so when it was announced it was sensible o clock for him but stupid o clock for us:)

it kind of backs up the rumour from pilchards earlier in the week about manager will be announced before ajax game but this person is currently on his hols though it was pointing more at wgs at the time.

'Talks a lot' is not the same as 'articulate'. In interviews or when doing radio/TV he rambles a lot, often incoherently.

Erm....you obviously did not see the posts above linking the YouTube interview with Matt Lorenzo and media training. Are you sure you are not getting confused with Alan Partridge?

Really Good and a very loyal guy.

Something that we would not have had with Strachan.

Regards

Morph

Having looked at his record I think he's a superb choice for us.

I didn't think Strachan (or Keegan) would have had their hearts in the job and Shearer was just too inexperienced imho.

In Pardew we have someone who is still young, has a wealth of experience is a winner (albeit with a few setbacks) and I don't doubt feels he's got something to prove.

I'm now glad I got my ST when I did, for one horrible moment I thought we were going to get Tony Adams.

Looking forward to a great season. We have a mountain to climb, both in regard to the points and the team that needs assembling but let's hope we can give a good showing this season and get promotion next season if not this.

In total, he oversaw 90 Charlton games, with 28 wins, 25 draws and 37 defeats in that time.

I was surprised to see his record there wasn't even worse.

I'm pleased with the appointment, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating as always. Also had a good laugh reading through the Charlton Life thread with Charlton fans slating (raping?) Pardew left, right, and centre. It's not too hard to sympathise, because we've had our share of useless managers. The same manager can be useless in one place and great in another though, we've seen that too.

Been warming to him since he became a serious contender.

Ticks all the relevant boxes -

- Good experience, successful at both Reading and WHU (not so well at Charlton, but I think there were mitigating circumstances there, and he can hopefully learn from that a la WGS at Coventry),

- Young enough to see us as a long term projects,

- Intelligent guy from what I have seen of him,

- Assertive,

- Well respected in the game and a 'tracksuit' manager

Onwards and upwards with Alan Pardew's Red & White Army!!! Let's give him a rousing welcome tomorrow (and a happy birthday!).

"I don't like people who drain my time and energy. If you've seen the Harry Potter films, we use the term 'dementors' - people who can draw the life out of you in terms of your energy. So we eradicate the 'dementors', encourage the positive people, and that spreads around to create the team spirit we have here"

Alan Pardew quote

Quite a few dementors in our set up and this forum!!!

I'm delighted, very sensible signing.

For those who were big name dreaming, don't be dissapointed and look at it as being 'the best we could get' He is exactly what we need starting, as we do, -10 bottom of the old 3rd team/squad/ whatever in tatters.

As someone else said, he arrives without baggage and knows exactly what has to be done. Lets get behind the new boss and be realistic over who we expect him to sign.

It's great to be back COYR :-)
