Under Weststand Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 A little underwhelmed when I heard the news on sky but a little rational thinking, and this is as good as we could probably expect. As several have said we are are 3rd tier club on -10 points, and he has a reasonable record so overall this is looking like a decent appointment. I guess it now all depends on what budget he has to work with & getting a team ready for league 1. His contacts should allow him a decent chance of putting a strong team together. As Fan the Flames said it reminds me of WGS appointment lets hope it's the start of the good times returning Alan Pardews red & white army. Scummer Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Anyone know what his record of signing players is like? Is he one for buying players who are already the finished article, or does he spot up and coming talent? We probably need to bring in half a dozen players or more in the next few weeks, so it might give an idea of what to expect.
SFC Forever Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 I am very pleased we have a manager we can all look forward to backing. Has a reasonable record and with us being able to buy we could see some early movement in the transfer market. Look forward to seeing him on Saturday. Let's give him and Markus a right royal Saints welcome.

Wiltshire Saint Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Anybody who cares to read my posts from about four years ago (no takers!) will read that Alan Pardew was my first choice before Burley came. What a shame it has taken four years for the penny to drop. Too late now? If only the club listened to you we probably wouldn't be in such a mess now. With your foresight and intelligence I would be happy to have you as our manager as you would probably save the club all by yourself. Is there any chance of getting some links to your archive posts? I would be interested in reading your posts from 4 years ago and more recent ones as well. Thanks in advance.
SaintRichmond Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Would it be fair to say Pardew has a similar managerial style to Burley? I don't think so ..... His Win and Draw Ratio is far higher than Lispers, surely ... ???
Professor Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 This is unexpected. I reckon he is a good choice for getting us back into the CCC and possibly the PL thereafter. But then ? Seems like a middle-term appointment. But what the hell, with a couple more years under his belt, even that may click. We could have ended up with a lot, lot, worse. Almost unstinted praise by Alpine standards, but having just spent two weeks in the Swiss Alps, the altitude and lower Oxygen levels do affect the head, although it doesn't seem to have been a problem for Marcus, or any of the Liebherr family. Re the comment that Alan Pardew 'seems like a middle term appointment', that is actually what the announcement says, as it is for an initial period of 3 seasons. That looks like the perfect compromise between long-term commitment, short term stability, and incentive to the manager. If he gets us two promotions in 3 years, he'll be close to God in Hampshire, but even if it takes a little longer it looks an excellent decision. We now have a capable manager who will give the club some deserved profile amongst the media and who has shown he has what it takes to build a successful side. trigger Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Am I the only one who thinks Alan Pardew is an utter tool? Take the fiasco at Reading. He signs a new contract, then West Ham come sniffing, Reading refuse him permission to speak to them, toys come out the pram, and he resigns. Is that the sort of integrity and loyalty we want from a manager? Is this not also the same guy who had Tevez and Mascherano at his disposal at West Ham, yet didn't play them? dellboypete Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 I work in a small office with a Chelsea season ticket holder, a Brentford season ticket holder and a Stoke fan. We've also got a consultant in from Derby this week who is a season ticket holder at pride park. All of them came in this morning saying what a great appointment Pardew is for us - which cheered me up no end. I was initially underwhelmed, probably because he was not on my radar - but on reflection I reckon it is a very shrewd move by our new owners. Somebody posted that it shows that the new owners don't have ambition. However the ambition is to get out of the 3rd tier, and they've brought Pardew in who clearly has excelled at this level. I haven't been soo excited for years

Jimmy Gabriel's Halo Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Was just about to sort out Mrs Jimmy Gabriel's Halo this morning with the old morning glory when the news came on the radio. This resulted in an immediate cry of "FFS" from me and immediate loss of said morning glory. But, thinking about it, this could be the right appointment at the right time. He can start with a blank canvas and really put his mark on the club and by getting the right coaching staff and players in I think we might have a chance of the play offs after all. Here's hoping anyway. Now, where's Mrs Jimmy Gabriel's Halo gone........??

Sound footballing decision there!! His hands were tied as to how he could use them at WHU, it was a ploy by their management companies to get them into a UEFA league prior to moving on to a big-name club, which could be seen by all the wrangles over their contracts and registrations when they did move on at the end of that season. Clifford Nelson Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 It's a shrewd appointment. He knows what is needed for promotion. Whether he succeeds this season may be questionable with so little preparation time left, but we will soon see. He won't fill SMS by his charisma alone, so the football need to be as good as can be expected on this level, and more than anything the team needs to WIN. That's an expectation I lost years ago, somewhen in the Branfoot era, and I'm looking forward to recovering it. Welcome to the South, Alan! krissyboy31 Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Am I the only one who thinks Alan Pardew is an utter tool? No probably not but then there are people who think the same of WGS, Coppell, Curbishley, Ince or whoever and others trying to ague that Adams (either of them) would be a good appointment. I think it is a good if not spectacular appointment. We could have done better (although we don;t know that realistically) but we could certainly done much much worse!! As an aside, I see that Adam Leitch is claiming it as yet another Echo EXCLUSIVE!!!

saints-cris Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 I'm really pleased about this. Got a manager who just a few years ago was in the premiership with West Ham and in the FA Cup final. To lure him down to the bottom of League one is very impressive to be honest. Yes, it would have been better to get WGS or likewise, but he's been managing in the Champions league recently, I think that getting him to drop down to league one was a step too far and unrealistic. Great signing, hopefully now everything is in place for us to finally go forward.

Daren W Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Underwhelmed to be honest, I'd have taken Coppell as the most realsitic option. It's amusing to see people say how pleased they are to see a manager of his status in League One... Exactly where he would have been with Charlton... lol I'll just remember being underwhelmed with Strachan's appointment and being pleasantly stunned. My only doubts is that Pardew is a disloyal, mercenary ******... Now prove me wrong Alan...

VectisSaint Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Initially a bit underwhelming, but on reflection this is probably an excellent appointment, and just what we need. I was interested to see this bit on the Wiki about this time as Reading manager: "and his régime to increase the fitness of the squad. Pardew also coined his motto "Tenacity, Spirit and Flair" to give his side a psychological edge" Sounds similar ideas to WGS to me, which would be good, our fitness levels since WGS left have generally been poor (with possible exception of time Snodin was here) and truly appalling under Burley, and when you don't have the best players in the world, the fitness aspect can be the difference between failure and success (all footballers are fit, its that extra bit that keeps the mental state going until the last second of the game that is critical). Important aspect for me will be who he brings in as his assistant and othe rback room staff. Would like to see Killer retained, but AP probably needs a good assistant. Pity Snodin is now so revered at Leeds.

SNSUN Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Pleased with this. I wanted a young manager for the long term but with experience. Pardew fits this. Good Luck to him, let's start signing players and winning games!
Beer Engine Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 This is a fantastic appointment. Good experience, plays football the right way, is capable of managing us through all three divisions, he has something to prove, good contacts and reputation in the game. Also he has no sodding "affinity to Southampton" the most over rated requirement people bang on about on here. If he's still with us in three years time I would expect us to be a solid CCC level club at worst. Personally I am pleased it isn't Strachan, I would have been uncomfortable with that appointment long term because I wouldn't understand his motivation. New owners, new board, new manager, new players, new club. Brilliant. Agree with that 100%.
eelpie Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 This is a positive appointment. Realistic. Alan Pardew wants to succeed. He will stand no nonsense, he is tough and he knows his football. And he is experienced in all levels. It is a new beginning for all of us. MLT or WGS for DOF, a kitty for strengthening the squad (Pardew will buy wisely), survive the first few weeks while the new team learns Pardew's way of playing, and we'll be off and upwards. Can't wait for tomorrow's match COYR!!!
