Good point, well made!

A long term appointment, someone with experience at all the levels we find ourselves now and hope to find ourselves in the future.

Hope he has made up with Arsene, I would love to see a few Arsenal youngsters down here!

Theo Walcott ;)

I've seen the comments about AP being no WGS. If you look at their records in English football they ain't a million miles apart. Both managed losing sides in an FA Cup final. WGS may have had the highest league finish, but AP gained promotion with 2 teams. I'd say they are pretty evenly matched. We've done well to get him. He's certainly a better option than some of the names that were doing the rounds.

You can't really include WGS time at Celtic as it's not exactly difficult to do well in a league where you manage one the two richest clubs in the division.

that is a tad harsh...

he has a better record than marton o'niell. he got celtic to the knock out stages of the champions league for the first time and pushed AC Milan to extra time in the san siro..

not to be sniffed at IMO

Full track record is

West Ham 20-10-2003 11-12-2006 163 67 58 38

A West Ham would be OK

I cannot say I am overwhelmed by the prospect as he has the charisma of a house brick but there is no doubt he has extensive experience and contacts at a higher level and we have to accept we are a League 1 side. After his Charlton near death experience I hope that he has been committed a level of funds to get us promoted this year.

I have to admit he would not have been my first choice, but I think he has the pedigree to do a good job for us. As FF mentioned earlier - we have to give the guy time to build 'his' team & then gel those guys into a unit that can compete in the second half of the season & hopefully give us a cracking chance the year after.

Good luck Alan - COYR!

I think this shows how shrewd the new owner and his team are. If you look at all the currently unemployed British managers, you'd have to look hard to find someone with a better track record and better experience. 47% win rate? when was the last time we had that?

Well done all concerned. Here's to three years and more of spiralling upwards!

I thought we were going to be ambitious ! I can't see this being a great appointment

Dear Snowballs2 ...

Hasn't it sunk in yet ????

WE ARE IN DIVISION 1 .... !!!!!!!!!!

With that in mind, I think that Alan Curbishly's appointment is an excellent one

He KNOWS what it takes at this level

It IS an ambitious appointment IMHO ........ the FIRST ambition (aim) :)is to get OUT of Div 1

My only concern about Pardew is will he see the 3 years through?

If he gets off to a cracking start and his stock is raised again, will he be able to turn down the lure of a struggling Premier League club?

At least with a 3 year deal we'll get decent compensation

As mentioned by many other posters, considering the situation we are in, this is a great result. A manager with experience at this level (and how to get out of it [-o

Given the choice of Pardew or Hart (who looks like keeping the Skates job in The Prem) I know which one I'd choose. And lets be thankful it wasn't The Donkey FFS :p

All the talk of WGS was a great diversion, and I take my hat off to all those behind the scenes who kept all the rumours of APs appointment to an absolute minimum. It wouldn't surprise me if WGS was in on the Red Herring ploy at Staplewood :D. Not sure if L1 (Div 3 old money) would have been an ideal backdrop for WGS to manage in, as his expectations would have probably far outweighed the capabilities of the players and led to a lot of frustration (but interesting post match interviews ;)). Who knows we may get him yet as DoF.

At long long last we can actually start to focus on the Football side of things, although the next few weeks will hopefully also be dominated by transfer news, but please remember the new owners will not be chucking silly money into a bottomless pot, they have clearly stated they have a long term plan for stability and progression upwards. A few astute signings to bolster the side up and then a bit of a spend in The Jan sales to see us into The layoffs is probably a realistic (but by no means easy) objective this season.

At long last my faith in Fridays has been restored :smt023.

Patience will be needed as well, don't read too much into it when we get rolled over by Ajax on Saturday. The real world starts at home to Millwall, which given Pardew's past association with both WHU and Charlton, should mean we will at least have a highly motivated manager on the touchline ;)

Agreed.

I feel a slight disappointment what with those other names being bandied about, but on the other hand, we have avoided having Tony Adams. And looking at it realistically, Pardue is somebody who would have been considered beyond our scope last season, when we had to look at lower Dutch league managers. His CV fits the job in hand, with success at achieving just what we need; promotion from this division and back to the promised land.

I also understand from what I read that he is a bit of a disciplinarian, so that's a big plus for me.

Happy with this appointment..

Has a decent track record and came within minutes of winning the Cup Final in 2006.

Like Wes above, I have also heard he is a "no nonsense" disciplinarian which is something we have cried out for ( Bar the all to short Pearson tenure) since WGS !

Wecome Alan and good luck with the challenges ahead ! SMS will be right behind you !

I am delighted with this appointment and his name never even crossed my mind in all the speculation.

From my memories of the FA cup final, assuming it was representative of his ethos, he likes to play fast, attacking football... with 2 (TWO) attacking wingers... and it so nearly paid off against Liverpool that day.

Hopefully the same will be true when we make the play-off final this year (only with a different end result).

Good news at last!!!

So we've had Owner speculation, manager speculation and now on to the player speculation!!!

Wrong former Charlton and West Ham Manager I think ! ;)

This is unexpected.

I reckon he is a good choice for getting us back into the CCC and possibly the PL thereafter.

But then ?

Seems like a middle-term appointment. But what the hell, with a couple more years under his belt, even that may click.

We could have ended up with a lot, lot, worse.

Oh the dilemma of what to do once we are in the Premier League!

Fair comment. I was simply trying to focus on his time in English football. Had I not mentioned this, then there would have been loads of people on here saying 'so where does WGS winning the Scottish Prem come into this'. You know how it is. lol

Got to say I'm absolutely delighted with this appointment. Experience at this level, experience higher up as well, with success at those levels as well.

Absolutely right!

This is a super appointment and I for one am delighted that AP has arrived. I hope we take him on a long contract... consistency is key now.

New owner, new manager, new ambition.... no debt, no plc, no Lowe, no second rate manager. Now we need about 10 decent players to reinforce Kelvin Davies and we're destined for real greatness!! :)

Chuffed to bits! Being a Saints fan just got even better.

He sorted out the mess at Reading very well and did well at West Ham too. Charlton is a slight worry but WGS had just got Coventry relegated and look what happened next. Charlton were (and still are) reeling from Curbishley going and their relegation season was just as traumatic and messy as ours - quite a whirlpool to walk into.

With a more stable platform and hopefully backing in the transfer market - hopefully Alan has already supplied the board with a list of targets as we need to move fast - he should do well.

This is a fantastic appointment.

Good experience, plays football the right way, is capable of managing us through all three divisions, he has something to prove, good contacts and reputation in the game.

Also he has no sodding "affinity to Southampton" the most over rated requirement people bang on about on here.

If he's still with us in three years time I would expect us to be a solid CCC level club at worst.

Personally I am pleased it isn't Strachan, I would have been uncomfortable with that appointment long term because I wouldn't understand his motivation.

New owners, new board, new manager, new players, new club. Brilliant.

So, anyone still prefer to have Wotte?

lol.

Just shows how our standards and expectations had slipped after Rupert Lowe's crazy schemes.

Any team in the league would be happy to have Pardew as manager (well, apart from Charlton, but they seem to be self destructing worse then we are...) we are a big club at this level, lets aim high

An unexpected appointment, but one that sets our sights onwards & upwards, with good experience of this league and the one above, and most importantly, how to get out of them.

Given that our recent history includes the appointments ( in the Prem ) of Stuart Gray, Steve Wigley, Sturrock, and Bagpuss, and in the CCC of the dimwitted dutch duo, how can this be seen as a poor appointment ? His track record, at a higher level than we currently find ourselves, is superior to all of these.

He's not even been in post for 12 hours and already there are some giving him a slating, give him a chance. Let's be honest, WGS would have been good, but was really only a daydream.

AP is a very very good solid appointment IMHO ......... ( and would surely have had an offer from a CCC Team in due course )

He is "street wise" at Div 1 level, and will know what it will take to get out of this league

I hope that us fans will be realistic in what type of Football to expect, ie, do we want to get out of Div 1 OR do we want to watch pretty pretty stuff and then get kicked to hell in the final third

GOOD LUCK to Alan Curbishly, and WELL DONE to Messrs Leibherr and Cortese for getting him:rolleyes::)

You meant Alan Pardue Surely?
